How to set up an indoor security camera

Updated: 16 October 2026

The camera is on the kitchen table, the app is installed, and the picture is still a spinner. Setup for the twelve plug-in models in our [indoor security camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/indoor-security-camera) is the same shape every time: a UK socket, the right Wi-Fi name, a card if this model has a slot, and a test from outside the house. This is how to set up an indoor security camera without inventing a menu path the listing never printed. If you have not chosen the camera yet, start with the [indoor security camera buying guide](/hub/electronic-surveillance/indoor-security-camera/sub/indoor-security-camera-buying-guide). If the lens is going on the glass, read [window security camera or indoor camera](/hub/electronic-surveillance/indoor-security-camera/sub/indoor-security-camera-window-or-room) before you stick anything down.

Plug it in and join the right Wi-Fi

These cameras are plug-in. The Ring Indoor Camera (2nd Gen) says a standard electrical socket. Look at the pins. If you need a new socket, that is an electrician, not a step in the app. Wi-Fi is the next failure. The wansview K1 and the Outinput PC340 state dual-band, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The Tapo C210, TC60, and TC70 state single-band, and a TC60 reviewer says 2.4 GHz only. The Ring, Blink, eufy, and C211 files do not print a band. As a rule of thumb, a hub that only shows a 5 GHz name will not see a 2.4 GHz camera. Rename or enable the 2.4 GHz network before you blame the camera. A C210 two-pack reviewer describes the Tapo path. The phone joins the camera’s own Wi-Fi, you send the home password, and the camera then joins the house. That is one owner’s account. Do not assume Ring or Blink use the same hotspot.

The card, if this camera has one

Ring’s three indoor cameras and the Blink Mini 2K+ do not describe a memory card. Saved clips sit on a plan, with a 30-day trial on the listing. If you bought one of those and you will not pay, you are in the wrong article. The fee split is on the indoor security camera without a subscription page. On a Tapo, an eufy C220, the K1, or the Outinput, the card is not in the box. You buy it. The K1 listing says to format the TF card to FAT32 or exFAT first, and it asks for a high-endurance card, Class 10 or U1, up to 128 GB. The Outinput listing recommends a genuine high-endurance card, preferably 32 to 128 GB, and warns that some larger cards fail. A later review says the camera sometimes fails to see a card that a PC can still read. Reseat it before you assume the slot is dead.

Prove the live view from outside

A picture on the home Wi-Fi is not proof. A Tapo C210 reviewer says that on mobile data the app can take long enough, and enough retries, that you miss the movement if you are only on live view. Stand outside, turn Wi-Fi off on the phone, and open the live view. If it will not connect, you do not yet have a camera you can use while you are out. Cry detection is not NHS safer-sleep advice: the baby still sleeps on their back, in their own cot, in your room for at least the first six months.

When setup has failed, and when to stop

On the K1, playback that drops until you restart the app is a reported fault, not a setting you have missed. Stop if the adaptor smells, discolours the socket, or trips the breaker. Stop if you are about to add a socket or run a cable through a wall. Sticking the K1 to a pane is not that job. When the live view works away from home, and a clip exists where the listing said it would, setup is done.

Common questions

Which Wi-Fi name should the camera join?
Use 2.4 GHz unless the listing says it also takes 5 GHz. The K1 and the Outinput state both. The C210, TC60, and TC70 state single-band, and a TC60 reviewer says 2.4 GHz only. Several other listings do not print a band. A 5 GHz-only hub is a common reason a small camera never appears.
Does the memory card come in the box?
No. Tapo, eufy, wansview, and Outinput all describe a card you buy. Ring and Blink do not describe a slot at all. Format a TF card to FAT32 or exFAT before you rely on the K1, and prefer a high-endurance card where the window listings ask for one.
How do I know it works when I am out?
Turn the phone’s Wi-Fi off and open the live view, the way you will when you are actually away. A C210 reviewer found the app slow enough on mobile data to miss the moment. A picture that only loads on the home network is not finished setup.
The camera will not join. What should I try first?
Confirm the band, move it closer to the router, and on a Tapo follow the hotspot step a reviewer described: phone to camera, then camera to the home network. On the eufy, one buyer failed at the QR code and the serial. Reseat a card that a PC can read if the K1 says the card is missing.
When do I call an electrician?
When you need a new socket, a new cable in the wall, or the adaptor runs hot or trips the breaker. You do not need one to plug a USB supply into an existing 13-amp socket or to stick an indoor window camera to the glass.
Should I leave it watching while I am home?
Only if you mean it to. Use the Ring cover, the eufy head-away mode, or a Tapo privacy zone before the lens sees a bed or a neighbour. A software zone is not the same as a shutter you can see from the chair.
