Window security camera or indoor camera

Updated: 16 October 2026

You want the cars on the drive, and you do not want a hole in the brick. A camera stuck to the inside of the glass is built for that. A pan-tilt meant for the nursery is not. This page is the choice between a window security camera or indoor camera in the room, using the twelve listings in our [indoor security camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/indoor-security-camera). The wider buying order is on the [indoor security camera buying guide](/hub/electronic-surveillance/indoor-security-camera/sub/indoor-security-camera-buying-guide). Setup of the card and the Wi-Fi is on the [how to set up an indoor security camera](/hub/electronic-surveillance/indoor-security-camera/sub/indoor-security-camera-how-to-set-up) page. If the picture you need is outside the glass, buy a window camera and treat the pavement as someone else’s data.

When the job is the drive, not the sofa

Two listings in this set are window cameras. The wansview K1 is £35.30, a plug-in 2K camera for a garden, a drive, or a front door, with colour night vision and a 10-second human clip. A TF card up to 128 GB is not included. It states dual-band Wi-Fi and Alexa, and the star line is 4.3 from 5,457 reviews. On double glazing, use the magnetic sticker, not the bracket. It is not water resistant. A reviewer blocks a neighbour’s property, and others say the card sometimes vanishes until it is reseated. The Outinput PC340 is £49.99. It is also 2K, with an 18 degree magnetic mount, no drilling, dual-band Wi-Fi, a siren, and starlight colour stated to 10 metres. The app line is Android and iOS, not Alexa. The star line is 4.4 from 551 reviews, a smaller sample than the K1. Skip the Outinput if you need Alexa. Skip both if the subject is a dog on the sofa. Room cameras are on the best indoor security camera page.

Glass, glare, and double glazing

Glass is a lens in front of the lens. The K1 tells you, on double glazing, to change the mount. An Outinput reviewer says double glazing barely hurt the picture, including low evening sun straight into the window, but two-way sound through the glass was poor. A room camera makes a worse window camera. A Tapo C210 reviewer would not aim that pan-tilt through glass. A small light on the camera reflected until the outside view distorted. A moving head also will not sit flat on the pane the way a window bracket does.

The pavement is not your hallway

The Information Commissioner’s Office home CCTV guidance says you should point a camera so it captures only your own property where you can. If it captures someone else’s property, a public area, or a communal space, data protection law applies, because the images and the voices are personal information. The ICO page says the guidance is under review because of the Data (Use and Access) Act. A drive, a pavement, or a neighbour’s window is that case. A K1 reviewer already uses blocking so the neighbour is out of the frame. A Ring privacy cover blinds the whole camera. It does not crop the street. The old Surveillance Camera Code of Practice page on GOV.UK was withdrawn on 17 February 2022.

When to stay with a camera in the room

Stay indoors, in the room, when the subject is the dog, the cot, or the hallway. A fixed Tapo TC60 or a Ring Plus watches one aim. A Tapo C210 or a Ring Pan-Tilt watches a room the subject walks around. Those are the right tools, and they are the wrong tools against a window because of the glare a C210 owner already reported. Choose the window camera when you have already decided the picture is outside and you will block what is not yours. Between the two, the K1 is the cheaper listing with more reviews and a stated magnetic fix for double glazing. Check the card on the first night either way.

Common questions

Should I buy a window camera or a room camera?
Buy a window camera if you need the drive, the door, or the garden and you will not drill outside. Buy a room camera if you need the people or the pet inside. A pan-tilt pressed to the glass is the option a C210 reviewer already rejected, because the camera’s own light reflects.
Will it work on double glazing?
The K1 listing says to use the magnetic sticker instead of the bracket. An Outinput reviewer found the picture acceptable through double glazing, including low sun, and found two-way talk through the glass poor. Fit the mount the listing names, then look at a real clip before you rely on it.
Am I allowed to film the street?
If the lens captures someone else’s property, a public area, or a communal space, the ICO says data protection law applies. Limit the view, use a block so the neighbour is not in frame, put up a sign, and do not keep footage you do not need. The withdrawn surveillance-camera code is not the current householder checklist.
Which window camera is which?
The K1 is £35.30, 4.3 from 5,457 reviews, with a card up to 128 GB and Alexa. The Outinput PC340 is £49.99, 4.4 from 551 reviews, with a card up to 256 GB, no Alexa in the controller line, and an optional US cloud. Both are indoor and not water resistant.
Can I use a pan-tilt on the window instead?
You can try, and a C210 reviewer says not to. The status light reflects on the glass, and the head is built to move around a room, not to lie against a pane. Use a window mount if the job is outside.
Does the window camera need to be waterproof?
No. Both listings say they are not water resistant, and indoor use is what the pages state. They sit inside and look out. Rain on the glass is the weather they are sold to see. An outdoor camera is a different product, with a different mount.
