How to set up a GSM security camera

Updated: 23 October 2026

The camera is on the kitchen table, the bracket is still in the bag, and the stable or the allotment gate can wait. How to set up a GSM security camera, for the listings in this set, is a bench job first: charge the battery, clear the SIM PIN, join the app named on that listing, and watch one clip on your phone before you drill anything. The Products Compared editorial team drew the order from the amazon.co.uk box notes and from public setup guides, checked against the pages on 19 October 2026. We did not time a winter runtime. The wider choice of camera sits in the [GSM security camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/gsm-security-camera).

Charge, SIM, and the PIN

Put the battery on charge before the first scan. Several boxes include a USB cable with no BS 1363 charger, so use your own UK three-pin plug. While it charges, fit the nano-SIM the right way up. Xega’s bullets name O2, Vodafone, EE, or Three after the PIN is gone. ieGeek wants data and voice, so a data-only card is the wrong plastic for that body. Which card you pay for is on the GSM security camera SIM card page. Turn the PIN off before the SIM stays in the camera. For an ordinary consumer SIM, clear the PIN in a phone. Do not put an IoT or M2M SIM into a handset, because the carrier can lock the card.

App, blue light, and the QR code

The app is not the same on every box. Guides for much of this style use UBox: add a device, choose the 4G setup, and scan the QR code. ieGeek names ieGeek Cam. COCOCAM names CloudEdge. GuardMy and the UBox manual treat a solid blue light as the ready state. Your listing may print a different colour. If the lamp never settles, the usual causes are a PIN still set, a SIM with no 4G, or the wrong app. The UBox manual suggests about 2.6 metres and a tilt of about 15–30 degrees. Those figures are that manual’s suggestion, not a measurement of every ASIN. Use an APN only for the SIM brand that printed it.

Card, alerts, and a clip you can see

Fit the microSD or TF card and format it in the app before you trust an alert. Many listings advertise a slot up to 128 GB and leave the card out of the box. One ieGeek reviewer could use 32 GB, with FAT in the way of a larger card. If the app rejects the card, step down in size. Local clips stay on the card. Opening them on your phone still uses mobile data. Walk a test while the camera is still at a height you can reach, and confirm that a clip appears. If the picture shows a neighbour’s window or the lane, tighten the angle. That ICO point is in the GSM security camera buying guide.

Panel aim, then the bracket

Face the panel at open sun before you commit the screws. A UK installer writing about larger Hikvision kits suggests a south-facing panel at roughly 50–60 degrees for winter. That angle is their note, not a measured yield from a 5 W or 6 W panel here, and we will not turn it into a December runtime. Watch a day of charging if the app shows a battery percentage, then fix the bracket. The Xega XG-33 bullet says the install is tool-free and also describes a screw-in fit. Take a screwdriver anyway. The portable Xega XG-13 has no panel, so you charge it and move it. If the only sound fixing is higher than you should work, or the camera will watch staff or tenants, stop.

Common questions

Do you charge the battery before the first scan?
Yes. Charge the pack with the USB lead before you scan the QR code. Public setup guides for this kind of 4G camera start with a full charge, and several boxes include a cable without a BS 1363 charger. Use a UK three-pin plug you already own. A camera that arrives flat will not show a solid ready light.
Where do you turn a SIM PIN off?
Disable the PIN before the SIM stays in the camera. For an ordinary consumer SIM, TP-Link’s UK guidance is to clear the PIN in a phone, then fit the nano-SIM. Do not put an IoT or machine SIM into a handset, because the network can lock it. Xega’s bullets expect the PIN removed, then a SIM on O2, Vodafone, EE, or Three.
Which app do these listings name?
There is no single app for the ten listings. UBox is the app in the public 4G manuals that match much of this style of camera, using Add device and a QR scan. ieGeek names ieGeek Cam. COCOCAM names CloudEdge. Use the name printed on your listing. A QR code scanned in the wrong app fails even when the SIM and the lamp are fine.
When do you format the memory card?
Format the microSD or TF card in the app while the camera is still on the bench, before you rely on an alert. Many listings advertise a slot up to 128 GB and omit the card from the box. One ieGeek reviewer could use 32 GB where the table said 128 GB. Clips on the card stay local, and opening them on your phone later still uses mobile data.
When do you stop and call someone?
Stop if the only mount is a height you should not work at, if the camera needs a mains run to a pole, or if the system will watch staff or tenants. Prove a live clip at a height you can reach, with the PIN off, before any of those jobs. A neighbour’s window in the test clip is a reason to narrow the view, which is household CCTV guidance from the ICO.
