Indoor security camera privacy: cover the lens at home

Indoor security camera privacy starts in the hour you are home. On the ABUS PPIC31020 listing a flap covers the lens and claims to cut the mic and Wi-Fi.

The lamp is on and you are on the sofa, but the cube on the bookcase is still aimed at the room. Indoor security camera privacy is a record while you are out, and a cover you can see while you are in.
The worked example is the ABUS PPIC31020. Its amazon.co.uk bullets describe a flap that covers the lens and switches off the microphone and the Wi-Fi. On 15 October 2026 the shelf price was £96.47, with 4.0 from 168 ratings. The review text is not labelled as written in the United Kingdom, and nothing on this page was filmed in a lab.
In short
Shut the flap when you are in the room if you are relying on this listing. A privacy zone masks pixels and leaves the glass open. The cube is indoor and not water resistant, so a porch is a different camera.
Why a flap is different from a privacy zone
A privacy zone is a patch over part of the image. The lens still faces that patch, the microphone can stay live, and the camera can stay on the network. A guest can see a closed flap. Shoppers sometimes type privacy shutter camera for that cover. On PPIC31020 the shutter is the flap.
The bullets say one action covers the lens and switches off the microphone and the Wi-Fi. This page did not meter either. The claim is the listing saved on 15 October 2026. If the camera stays online after you shut the flap, the bullet and the unit disagree. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 judges that against the description and the price.
A flap that no longer sits flat has stopped doing that job. Switching off the Wi-Fi, if the flap does what it says, drops the live picture. It does not wipe a recording already on the card.
What the PPIC31020 listing claims
PPIC31020, ASIN B09LYJBZCD, prints 1080p, 15 frames a second, 180 degrees, and night vision labelled Night Color. It is listed as indoor and not water resistant. App2Cam Plus listings say you can view while travelling, and that access and card storage are free of a subscription, as a bullet on 15 October 2026.
The box line names an 8 GB card. A table cell names 128 GB as the maximum for a card you buy. This page gives no hours figure, because it did not fill a card. Ignore an item-type line that says PPIC91000. One review records a support reply that denied 5 GHz and called this a 2.4 GHz camera, against a dual-band bullet. Neither was re-tested here.

See the PPIC31020 listing. The wider indoor shortlist is the indoor security camera comparison, where the top pick is the Tapo C210 two-pack. The flap in this article is a different listing. Outdoor ABUS models and the monitor set are in the ABUS security camera comparison.
A 180 degree view is one room
A 180 degree indoor camera takes a wide slice in front of the lens. Walls, shut doors, and the space behind the bracket stay outside that angle. Cropping the app does not open a room the lens cannot see. At 15 frames a second, someone crossing the hall is a short run of frames. This page did not measure how readable a face is at the far end.
Aimed at a bay window, the cube can take the pavement. An open front door can take the communal path. The Information Commissioner's Office guide to home CCTV systems applies when picture or sound leaves your boundary. You need a clear reason, no more footage than that reason needs, and a way to let people know. A sign is the example the guide gives. Delete regularly. A request is usually due within one calendar month, and the guide prints no retention number for this card.
The guide was fetched on 15 October 2026 and is under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act, so the ICO page outranks this paraphrase. The Surveillance Camera Code of practice was withdrawn on 17 February 2022. The ICO says it will not usually remove a neighbour's camera. With the flap open the cube records children in view. A shared stair is outside this bookcase job.
When the night picture stays grey by day
Night Color is a table label here and on a 480p bullet camera in the same set. It was not a lab result. Reviews describe infrared in daylight, and other reviews praise the night picture. That is not a percentage. A grey picture at noon, lamps on and flap open, is the still to take to the seller. A dark gate needs an outdoor camera.
When an indoor camera is the wrong category
A porch fails the indoor line. IP66 and IP55 on other ABUS models are claims on their own listings, not a certificate for this cube. Compare them on the outdoor security camera page. A bark box is different: an electronic watchdog plays a dog bark and has no flap. See the electronic watchdog comparison. A surge protector named Watchdog only conditions power.
EasyLook BasicSet is a camera plus a portable screen. Reviewers say you cannot watch it away from home. The bullets say no internet or WLAN, and the table mentions Wi-Fi. This page did not settle that. A shop, a communal stair, or footage for an insurer needs a competent person, as does drilling a rented or listed wall. A 230 volt lamp-camera is mains work. Ordinary UK plugs are BS 1363. Move a short lead. Do not take this cube into the rain.
A routine for the hours you are home
Close the flap when you want the room private, and look at the lens. When you leave, open it and wait for a live picture. Shut, the lens is covered while you are out. Open, you are sitting in front of the camera.
- Confirm the flap sits flat, with no gap from the sofa.
- Close it, then check whether the live picture and the connection drop.
- With it open, see whether the window or the front door shows a pavement or a communal path.
- If it does, read the ICO guide and move the cube until the frame matches your reason.
Shut the flap before a conversation you want left off the card. A housemate's bedroom is their room.
