Hidden camera detector hotel room

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have just shut the door of a hotel room or a holiday let, and you want to know where a camera would have to point, which alert to use at night, and what to do if something looks wrong. A hidden camera detector hotel room check starts with your eyes, then a short pass, and it expects the hotel Wi-Fi to beep. Car magnets stay off this page. The [bug finder comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/bug-finder) is the model table if you are still choosing. This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools. Places and reporting come from UK news and public guidance. Alert notes come from amazon.co.uk reviews, not a lab stay.

Where a camera would have to point

Look at the bed and the bathroom first. In The Independent on 31 March 2026, Chris Charman points to clocks, smoke alarms, and the bed or the bath. His about 99 per cent is casework, not a detection rate for this set. Chargers, air fresheners, and picture frames belong in the same glance when they face the bed or the shower. The detector is the second pass. A camera that is off or writing to a card will not beep. The lens choice is on the RF detector or lens finder page.

A quiet alert in a hotel

At night, vibration beats a beep that wakes the corridor. It is stated for the HawkSpy K18, the AOBOCAM Hcd-001, the XiflLife S505, and the Souhpyh S502. AOBOCAM reviews mention hotels and a Premier Inn check. SIKVIO reviews mention Airbnb checks, but vibration is not stated and a review calls the beep loud. The XiflLife file is four reviews dated 11 September 2026, so 5.0 is not a hotel trial. The M8000 and the K20 appear in hotel reviews without vibration stated.

The beep you should expect

Hotel Wi-Fi is supposed to set a radio detector off. Charman calls consumer RF detectors nonsense because Wi-Fi and a smartwatch already radiate. That is a beep you have not accounted for, not a reason to bin the stick once the router and your phone are noted. HawkSpy and SIKVIO alarm on Wi-Fi. The T19 false-beeps beside a phone unless you lower sensitivity. The AOBOCAM trips on routers and smart TVs until you turn it down. Then see whether a second beep remains at a clock or a charger. Silence is not a clearance. The knob sequence is on how to use a bug finder.

If you find something

Film the object in place. Do not unplug it or take it home. Record what you see, tell the hotel or the booking platform, and contact the police. A BBC report of a Leamington Spa case describes a guest who removed a clock-radio camera. The host was later jailed. That is a prosecution, not a script to seize the clock. Airbnb Help article 3061 says that from 30 April 2024 hosts may not have cameras monitoring indoor spaces, even if switched off. A hotel is not covered by that article. In England and Wales, voyeurism is the Sexual Offences Act 2003, section 67. Those provisions were repealed for Northern Ireland in favour of the Sexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 2008. Call 101, and use 999 if you believe you are in immediate danger.

Common questions

Will hotel Wi-Fi set off an RF bug finder?
Yes, if the radio mode is working. Hotel Wi-Fi, the television, and your own phone are ordinary transmitters, and reviews of the HawkSpy, the SIKVIO, the T19, and the AOBOCAM describe exactly that beep. Note the router, lower the sensitivity, and see whether a second spot still alarms. A beep at the router is not, by itself, a hidden camera.
Which detectors in this set have a vibration alert for a night check?
The HawkSpy K18, the AOBOCAM Hcd-001, the XiflLife S505, and the Souhpyh S502 state vibration. The SIKVIO K18 is widely reviewed for Airbnb checks and does not state vibration, and one review calls the beep loud. The XiflLife line is only five reviews, so the feature is on the bullet, not on a large hotel sample.
What did Airbnb change on 30 April 2024?
Airbnb Help article 3061 says hosts may not have security cameras or recording devices monitoring indoor spaces from that date, even if the device is off or disconnected. Hidden cameras were already prohibited. Exterior cameras must be disclosed and must not watch indoors. A hotel that is not an Airbnb listing is not covered by that article. The criminal law still applies.
What should you do, and not do, if you find a lens or a clock that looks wrong?
Film it where it is, tell the hotel or the booking platform, and tell the police. Do not unplug it and do not take it away. A guest in a reported Leamington Spa case did remove a clock, and that is not the instruction on this page. FCDO Services says, for a private setting, to contact the police on 101 and not to treat a consumer detector as a specialist team.
Does a quiet detector mean the room is safe to sleep in?
No. Silence means this pass heard nothing. A camera that is off, wired, or recording to a card can be invisible to radio mode, and hotel Wi-Fi can have been the only thing the stick was hearing before you turned it down. Sleeping in the room is your decision after the look, the torch, and the pass, not a result the detector is allowed to certify.
Is the rule the same in Northern Ireland?
Voyeurism in England and Wales is section 67 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. The legislation page notes the repeal of those provisions for Northern Ireland and points to the Sexual Offences (Northern Ireland) Order 2008. Do not quote the England and Wales section as if it were the Northern Ireland offence. Reporting a find to the police is still the guest step in both places.
