Path light with motion sensor for a driveway

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want the keyhole and the step beside the drive to show up, and you do not want every car on the road to light the front of the house. A path light with motion sensor for a driveway, in this set, is a low solar stake or a short downlight. Point the sensor across the edge you walk, short of the boundary, and use motion-only or dim-plus-boost. The [path light with motion sensor comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/path-light-with-motion-sensor) lists the nine kits. This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools. There was no driveway test, and no lux meter.

Light the edge, not the road

The usual miss is a spot aimed down the drive towards the street. The PIR then includes the pavement, and every passing car becomes a trigger. Planning Portal’s lighting note says a PIR and a timer should not be tripped by traffic or pedestrians outside the property. The same head, left horizontal, also finds a neighbour’s window. These kits are ankle-to-knee spikes, not wall floods mounted at about 2–3 m. There is no sensitivity dial, only a mode button and a head you can tilt.

Across the walk, short of the boundary

A PIR notices movement across its view sooner than movement coming straight at it. For a drive, you want that across-the-path view on the edge you walk, and you want the zone to die before the boundary. Stated ranges are seller claims: nipify up to 10 m, the Linkind 2-pack 8 m, Fratink and WENATY up to 5 m, Auraglow up to 6 m, iseeway up to 16.5 ft. A 5 m claim still covers a pavement if the head looks at it. Fratink reviewers describe both lights tripping from a back door. A WENATY cool-white review says the sensor fires with nobody in the garden. Long grass, wind in a shrub, and a cat are the same class of false trip. How the spike goes in is the install page.

Mode and colour on a drive

Motion-only marks the step and then goes dark. Constant, or medium all night, is the mode a neighbour and a short winter day both feel. A sensor that can still see the pavement will trip in motion-only. The mode does not repair a bad aim. 6500 K spots here are nipify, Fratink, the cool WENATY pack, and the Linkind 2-pack. Warm rows are Auraglow and the warm WENATY pack at 3000 K, and the Linkind 3-pack can switch to 2700 K. Beside a bedroom, start with the warm end and keep the beam off the glass. GOV.UK’s England guidance sets no lux cap. Councils look at artificial light that may be a statutory nuisance. Cambridge City Council’s practical tone is to talk to the neighbour first, then re-aim. Which row matches that colour is in the buying guide.

When a stake is the wrong drive light

A solar stake can mark an edge and a step. It cannot hold a whole drive through a cloudy week. If the drive has to stay bright, that is a wired scheme on the solar or mains page, and a new circuit is an electrician’s job. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Where should the head point on a drive?
Point it across the edge you walk, and keep the detection zone inside the boundary. A head aimed down the drive towards the street will see cars and people on the pavement. The same horizontal aim finds windows. These are spike lights, so you move the spike and tilt the face. You do not mount them at the 2–3 m height written for wall floods.
Why does every passing car turn it on?
The sensor’s zone includes the road. Ranges claimed in this set run from about 5 m to 10 m, or up to 16.5 ft on iseeway, with angles around 120 or 150 degrees. That is enough to cover a pavement if the face looks that way. Planning Portal’s note is that traffic outside the property should not trip the PIR. Turn the head across the path, and shorten the zone by moving the spike back from the boundary.
Will motion-only mark the steps without staying on?
Yes, if the sensor sees the step and not the road. Motion-only, or a dim level that boosts, lights for about 10 to 30 seconds in these listings and then drops. Constant mode is the one that stays on and spends the cell. A bad aim still flashes for every car, even in motion-only. Fix the direction before you blame the mode.
Is 6500 K a problem next to a bedroom?
It is the harsher beam next to glass. nipify, Fratink, cool WENATY, and the Linkind 2-pack are 6500 K. Auraglow and warm WENATY are 3000 K. The Linkind 3-pack can switch to 2700 K. A WENATY review already describes a beam reaching a neighbour, and a ground-floor review describes a sensor firing with an empty garden. Warm white aimed at a window can still be the complaint. Aim first, then colour.
What does a council use as a light limit?
GOV.UK’s England guidance does not set a lux cap. Councils must investigate artificial light that may be a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Security lights are listed as a possible cause. Natural light is outside that guidance. The practical first step, as Cambridge City Council puts it, is to talk to the neighbour and re-aim or shade the fitting. This page does not invent a brightness number.
What if long grass or a cat is the trigger?
Movement in the zone is what the PIR is for, including grass, a shrub in the wind, and animals. WENATY reviews mention wind. Clear the grass in front of the head and avoid aiming through a hedge that moves. There is no sensitivity dial on these listings to turn that down. If the trigger is traffic outside the boundary, move the aim. A cat on your own path is the sensor working.
