How to install a solar path light with motion sensor

Updated: 22 October 2026

The kit is on the path, the ground is firm after rain, and you want a light tonight. How to install a solar path light with motion sensor, for the stakes and the Auraglow downlight in this set, is mostly placement and a first charge, not a new circuit. Put the panel where it sees the sun, set motion-only or dim-plus-boost for the first nights, and judge the beam after that. Prices and winners sit on the [path light with motion sensor comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/path-light-with-motion-sensor). A new 230 V garden circuit is a different job, on the [solar or mains path light](/hub/electronic-surveillance/path-light-with-motion-sensor/sub/path-light-with-motion-sensor-solar-or-mains) page. This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools. There was no install test in a garden.

Spike, screws, or the Auraglow pole

Soften the spot with a hand fork if the lawn is baked or full of stones. Push the spike in. Forcing it into hard ground is how sockets split. iseeway’s page disagrees with itself on assembly, so follow the parts in the box. Do not dig where a cable or a pipe might already run. Auraglow AG765 is a motion sensor, a pole, and a solar panel, with a push-in spike and no wall-screw kit. The stake spots, nipify, Fratink, WENATY, and both Linkind packs, can go in the lawn or onto screws where the kit includes them. Keep the panel facing the light.

Charge and the mode button

Give the panel a day of sun before you decide the light has failed. A first night out of a dark parcel often looks feeble because the cell left the warehouse flat. These listings do not share one USB charge step, so do not assume a port. The Linkind 3-pack has a green charging indicator. A 48-hour sticker in reviews of that pack is not a rule for the others. Covering the panel, a method noted by The Solar Centre on other UK solar lights, is a way to test, not a specification for every ASIN here. Set motion-only, or dim plus a boost, for the first few nights. Constant-on empties a short day. Timeouts are about 10 seconds on the Linkind 2-pack, about 20 seconds on Fratink and WENATY, and about 30 seconds on Auraglow. The Linkind 3-pack swaps 2700 K and 6500 K with a 3-second press. Change one thing at a time.

The first night

Walk the path after dusk and watch the timeout, not the advert. A short run, then darkness, usually means a thin charge or a constant mode, before it means a dead LED. A panel under a hedge can glow and then stop. A porch lamp on the panel can hold the dusk sensor in daylight mode, so move one of them. Point the head across the walk you use. Aiming down a drive towards the road is the mistake the driveway guide is for. If the lamp is still dead after a sunny day and a covered-panel test, then suspect the unit. Which mode suits the path is in the buying guide.

When the fitting is finished

A spent solar light is electrical waste. GOV.UK’s guidance uses the crossed-out wheelie bin: the fitting does not go in household rubbish. Tape the terminals of a lithium cell you can remove, including Auraglow’s 18650, before a shop takes the battery. A sealed pack stays in the fitting. Opening a glued head is not a step here. Stop and call a registered electrician when the job stops being a spike. A new mains circuit or buried cable is BS 7671 work. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Should you use the spike or the screws?
Use the spike in a lawn or a soft border, after you have loosened the soil, and stop if it will not go in without force. Use the screws where the kit includes them, on a wall or a fence. Auraglow AG765 is a pole and a ground spike, not a wall-screw kit. iseeway’s page disagrees with itself on assembly, so use the stakes that are actually in the box.
Do you charge it before the first night?
Leave the panel in sun for a day before you judge the first night. A parcel that has sat in the dark often looks dim at once. These nine listings do not share a USB charge instruction, so a cable is not the default step. The Linkind 3-pack shows a green charging light. A 48-hour sticker mentioned in reviews of that pack is not a rule for the others.
Which mode should you set first?
Set motion-only, or dim light plus a boost, until you know the panel is charging. Constant or medium-all-night is the mode that empties a short British day. Timeouts in the saved listings are about 10 seconds on the Linkind 2-pack, about 20 seconds on Fratink and WENATY, and about 30 seconds on Auraglow and iseeway. Change colour on the Linkind 3-pack with a long press, separate from the mode.
What if it only glows for a short time?
Assume shade, a flat first charge, or constant mode before you assume a fault. Move the panel into sun, leave it a day, and try motion-only again. A porch lamp shining on the panel can keep the dusk sensor asleep. If it is still dead after a bright day and a simple cover test, then the unit is the suspect. One dull evening is a weak test.
Where does a spent 18650 or a sealed fitting go?
Tape the terminals of a lithium cell you can remove, including Auraglow’s 18650, and take it to a battery collection. A sealed pack stays in the fitting, and the whole light goes as electrical waste, not in the household bin. GOV.UK describes the crossed-out wheelie bin and the take-back role of shops that sell enough portable batteries. This page does not describe opening a glued head.
