Smart home hub buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

Amazon.co.uk offers a smart home hub as if that label meant one box. It does not. In this set the same word covers an Alexa screen, a wall dashboard, a Tapo chime, and an infrared blaster. This smart home hub buying guide puts the checks in order: the devices you have, the radio they use, the Wi-Fi band the listing allows, and the plug or stand that is not in the box. The [smart home hub comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/smart-home-hub) holds the nine listings and the shelf prices, read on 21 October 2026. We did not lab-test the units. A hub is a role, not a brand

A hub title does not prove Zigbee, Matter, a camera store, or an infrared learner. Echo speakers and displays are Alexa devices with a built-in radio stack. Echo Hub is an 8 inch wall dashboard without a camera of its own. Tapo H200 is a Sub-1G chime and a local store for listed Tapo cameras. SwitchBot Hub Mini and Broadlink RM5plus are infrared bridges on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Homey, Aqara, a Hue Bridge, and Home Assistant boxes are not in these nine listings. A wall dashboard against a kitchen Show is the Echo Hub vs Echo Show 8 choice.

Match the radio first

Write down the radio each device already uses. Zigbee, Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, Tapo Sub-1G, and infrared are not interchangeable. Matter is an application layer, and a Thread border router is a different role from a Zigbee coordinator. Z-Wave is not in these nine. Tapo H200 speaks Tapo’s Sub-1G radio, capped at 64 sensors, buttons, or switches plus four cameras or doorbells. SwitchBot Hub Mini here is the infrared model, not the Matter SKU. Broadlink RM5plus is 38 kHz infrared only. Alexa can fire preset functions from the Broadlink app, not manually learned UserDefine buttons. An infrared hub in another room will not see the appliance.

Screen, camera, chime, extras

Once the radio matches, decide whether you are paying for a screen, a camera on the hub, a chime, or only a speaker. Echo Show listings include a camera. Echo Hub does not. Echo Dot Max has neither, and Graphite and Glacier White are the same speaker at £59.99. Echo Hub, at £89.99, is the wall dashboard, and its stand, cable pass-through, and Power over Ethernet adaptor are sold separately. Tapo H200 at £25.49 is the chime, 4.5 from 921 reviews, with microSD listed up to 512 GB and no card stated in the box. SwitchBot Hub Mini at £31.49 needs a USB adaptor that is not included. Six Echo files have no average-star line.

Passwords, plugs, and returns

UK mains are 230 V, and a mains adaptor should carry a BS 1363 plug. SwitchBot and Broadlink are 2.4 GHz only. Broadlink also rejects mesh SSIDs, and the name and password must be under 32 characters. A mesh that steers clients onto 5 GHz leaves those boxes offline. Band and power are the first steps on the how to set up a smart home hub page. From 29 April 2024, GOV.UK guidance on connectable products expects no universal default password, a published vulnerability contact, and a published minimum update period. If a camera films a neighbour or the street, Information Commissioner’s Office home-CCTV rules follow the lens. Local storage does not cancel them.

Common questions

What should you check before you buy a smart home hub?
List the devices you own and the radio each one uses, then match that radio to the role the listing names. Check whether the hub is 2.4 GHz only, whether a USB adaptor or wall stand is in the box, and whether a camera will film beyond your boundary. Prices here run from about £25.49 to £149.99, and the band does not tell you the radio.
Do you need a separate hub if you already have an Echo Show?
Often you do not, if the Show listing already includes the radio your devices use. The Echo Show 8 (3rd gen) names Zigbee, Matter, and Thread at £149.99, so Echo Hub at £89.99 repeats a dashboard rather than adding a missing radio. You still need another box for Tapo Sub-1G cameras or an infrared air conditioner.
Is Matter the same as Zigbee?
No. Zigbee is a radio. Matter is an application layer, and a Thread border router is a further role. A Matter logo does not prove your existing Zigbee bulb will join. In this set, the 3rd-gen Show 8 listing names Zigbee, Matter, and Thread together. SwitchBot Hub Mini here is not the Matter SKU, and Broadlink RM5plus is infrared only.
Why do cheap hubs need 2.4 GHz?
SwitchBot Hub Mini and Broadlink RM5plus are specified as 2.4 GHz only. A UK mesh that uses one name for both bands can still steer the hub onto 5 GHz, and setup never finishes. Broadlink also refuses mesh SSIDs and names longer than 32 characters. Echo displays are not in that 2.4 GHz-only group.
Is SwitchBot Hub Mini Matter-enabled?
The SwitchBot Hub Mini here, at £31.49, is not the Matter-enabled SKU. It learns infrared remotes and links SwitchBot devices over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. SwitchBot sells Matter on other models. The USB adaptor is not in this box, so you need a 5 V brick before the first pair.
What does PSTI ask you to look for?
From 29 April 2024 the UK rules for consumer connectable products ask for no universal default password, a published contact for vulnerability reports, and a published minimum period of security updates. Change defaults, use two-step verification, and install updates on day one. That is a buying check, not a star rating.
