Dummy camera buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to add a fake CCTV camera to a basket because the porch, the shed, or the shop door looks bare, and the Amazon table is already talking about 4K. A dummy camera buying guide is the order of checks before that click, using the twelve non-recording shells in this comparison. The housing is plastic, the light is usually a red LED, and nothing in the set stores a clip. Prices and star lines for each ASIN stay on the [dummy camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/dummy-camera). Peter F. updated this from the amazon.co.uk listings. There was no lab test.

A dummy does not record

Every product in this set is a housing a passer-by might take for a camera, sold as dummy, fake, imitation, or decoy. Reviews mention houses, sheds, drives, caravans, and shop doorways when the buyer did not need a clip. If you need a face, a number plate, or a file for the police or an insurer, this is the wrong shelf. Leicestershire PCC's business toolkit treats a shop dummy as a supplement to a real system, not a replacement. The ICO's organisational guidance does not cover dummy or non-operational systems, because personal data is unlikely to be processed. Filming past your boundary is on dummy camera vs real CCTV.

Read the title, then the table

Amazon's table often looks like a recorder. BW2600's table says 4K. BW-S89-BL's table says 1080p. WALI's table mentions Wi-Fi, an Android app, night colour, 12 V, and a weight of 0.28 g. BUYGOO's table mentions Bluetooth and an AVI format. Several tables say batteries are not required while the bullets describe an LED on cells. BW 1100B's controller value is DUMMY CAMERA. Trust the title and the battery bullet. DODUOS's table says corded electric while the install bullet says 2 AA cells, not supplied. QWORK's multi-packs and the JUSTOP twins have a table item count of 1. Count the cameras in the title. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives you 30 days to reject goods that are not as described.

Shape, pack, cells, weather words, sticker

Match the pack to the doorways. Singles are about £7.99 to £8.49, twins about £9.95 to £14.99, and the four-packs are the WALI at about £15.99 and the QWORK bullets at about £21.54. AA, not included, is stated for the BW 1100B, the BW-S89-BL, JUSTOP white, WALI, and DODUOS. BW2600's bullets say 2 AAA, and a review says AA. The other bullets do not name a cell. Tables print IP65 for the BW 1100B and WALI, IPX4 for JUSTOP white, IP44 for JUSTOP black, and IP54 for DODUOS and BW2600. The rest have no IP code. A UK note says the BW 1100B bay rusts when wet. Rain detail is on the outdoor dummy CCTV camera page. A sticker is a decal. The ASA has upheld unsubstantiated CCTV claims under the CAP Code.

What you still have to do after it arrives

Once the shell is in your hand, put it where a visitor can see it and cannot grab it, match the cell to the bullet, and take the cells out if the bay warms up. JUSTOP reviews describe smoke or batteries too hot to touch. That is a stop, not a DIY rewire. Screw packs are often short for brick. Height, a two-second flash, and a hot bay are on how to fit a dummy CCTV camera.

Common questions

What should you check before you buy a dummy camera?
Confirm you do not need a clip. Read the title for dummy, fake, or imitation, then ignore 4K, Wi-Fi, and night colour unless the bullets describe a recorder. In this set they do not. Next, match the pack to the number of doorways, read the cell size if the bullets state one, and quote only the weather words printed on that listing. Last, read the sticker as a decal. Batteries are usually not in the box.
Does a dummy camera have to be registered with the ICO?
The ICO's organisational video-surveillance guidance does not cover dummy or non-operational systems, because personal data is unlikely to be processed. That exclusion is not a fee and not a registration step for a shell. A real camera that films beyond your boundary is a different product, and the ICO home-CCTV page is the one that then applies. Do not treat a dummy as registered CCTV.
Are the batteries in the box?
Usually no. The BW bullets, the JUSTOP white twin, WALI, DODUOS, and BW2600 all say the cells are not included. QWORK's titles exclude batteries. Several Amazon tables say batteries are not required at the same time. Buy the size the bullets name, AA on most of those lines and AAA on the BW2600 bullets, and do not assume a cell is in the carton.
Why does the Amazon table say 1080p or 4K?
Those fields have been filled in as if the row were a real camera. BW2600's table says 4K. BW-S89-BL's table says 1080p. WALI's table adds Wi-Fi and night colour. The titles say dummy or fake, and the bullets describe an LED and no wiring. Read the title. The resolution line is not a sensor.
Is a CCTV sticker the same as a recording?
No. A decal in the box, or one a reviewer found loose, does not create footage. WALI, QWORK, BUYGOO, and the JUSTOP black twin name signs in the listing. DODUOS contradicts its own sticker count. If the sign says you are recording and nothing records, you are making a claim the product cannot support. Keep the wording to a warning that does not invent a camera.
