Doorbell camera or security camera: which view you need

A doorbell camera sees the caller at the step. A security camera sees the gate or drive. When one UK listing is enough, and when the house needs both.
On this page

The courier is on the step, the car sits by the side gate, and you are choosing a doorbell camera or security camera before you drill the wall.
In short
A doorbell camera is for the person at the door: a button, a face, and a sound you can hear. A separate security camera is for a view that door never had, such as the drive, the side gate, or the back path, and both are worth buying only when those two gaps are real.
What a doorbell is for
A front door camera in the UK does a small job. Someone stands at the button, and you want their face while you are upstairs, in the garden, or on the way home. The lens lives on the door or the frame. On a Wi-Fi video doorbell the alert is the phone, and a plug-in chime is in the box on some listings and sold separately on others. On amazon.co.uk, on 15 October 2026, that comparison ran from £9.34 to £109.99.
The picture is the step. A wide lens can also take the pavement or a shared landing, which is a boundary problem and still leaves a gate around the corner unseen. On a terrace the passage turns away from the street door. On a semi the gate can sit metres to the side of the porch. Most models in the Wi-Fi doorbell comparison are 2.4 GHz only. Test the phone on 2.4 GHz at the brick, because a 5 GHz-only network name will not run them. Keep the doorbell off 230 volt mains. If the existing chime shows 230 volts, stop and use a competent person.
A chime, and no picture
A hearing problem is a different buy. A wireless doorbell here is a radio button and indoor receivers, with no camera and no Wi-Fi. Eight amazon.co.uk kits on 15 October 2026 ran from £9.00 to £22.94. A plug-in chime needs a BS 1363 socket and goes silent in a power cut. Use the wireless doorbell comparison when you want the sound and you have decided against a recording.
What these ABUS cameras are for
A security camera for a driveway or a side gate is mounted on that view, and it watches whether or not anyone presses a button. The separate cameras priced here are six ABUS listings on amazon.co.uk, with shelf prices from 15 October 2026: a monitor set, an outdoor 4K camera, an indoor cube, two lamp-cameras, and a 480p bullet.
The camera this page puts first for a drive or a gate is the ABUS SmartLook PPIC54520B, listed at £148.66. The bullets say 4K, IP66, Wi-Fi or LAN, person, animal and vehicle filters, and push alerts in App2Cam Plus, with no subscription in those bullets. The star line is 3.4 from 18 reviews, which is a thin sample. The listing claims 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. A support reply in the raw notes said 2.4 GHz only, so test that band at the gate before you drill.
EasyLook BasicSet PPDF17000, at £350.99, is a camera plus a portable monitor, with two-way audio, a PIR sensor, and IP66 claimed. The bullets say no extra device and no internet or WLAN. The same file's table says Wi-Fi, so keep both lines. Reviews describe a private link to the monitor and say you cannot watch the set away from home.
The indoor PPIC31020 is £96.47, with 4.0 from 168 reviews, and the table says it is not water resistant. The lamp PPIC46520 is £239.82, 230 volts and 17 watts, sold to replace an existing outdoor light, which is mains work. The older lamp, PPIC36520, is £220.03 and IP55. The 480p bullet, CASA30500, is £221.23 and has no review line. Its bullets say 8 metres and a night-vision cell says 30 metres.
Where two-way audio is printed
Two-way audio means a speaker and a microphone after you have opened the app or the monitor. It is printed as yes on EasyLook, on PPIC31020, and on PPIC46520. PPIC54520B lists a microphone, and a speaker or an intercom is absent from its bullets. CASA30500 leaves the cell blank. If you need to speak at the gate, use a row that says you can talk.
App2Cam Plus is named on the 4K camera, the indoor cube, and the 230 volt lamp. Those three say access and card storage are free of a subscription.
Doorbell camera or security camera: when one view fails
You need both when the door and the gate fail in different ways in the same week. A parcel on the step while you are at work is a doorbell. A car, a side gate, or a back path missing from that lens is a camera. Video doorbell vs CCTV, for a house, is this choice of one mount or two. A camera for a side gate has no way to know that someone pressed the front door.
The security camera comparison includes a Ring bundle, a battery doorbell plus a plug-in indoor camera, listed at £59.98 on the same date. The indoor half is a room camera, and it is a poor stand-in for a weather-sealed drive. Shelf prices in that wider set run from £19.99 to £69.99.
Before you point a lens past the boundary
Beyond your boundary, the ICO home CCTV page, fetched on 15 October 2026, asks for a clear reason, no more capture than you need, a way to let people know, and regular or automatic deletion. A sign is the example it gives. A request is usually due within one calendar month. The page covers fixed cameras and smart doorbells, and it was marked under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act. The Surveillance Camera Code on GOV.UK was withdrawn on 17 February 2022.
The same rule covers the doorbell and the separate camera. If you film only your own property, UK data protection law generally does not apply. A wide doorbell that takes the pavement, or a gate camera that includes the neighbour's drive, is the case that page is about. Aim, record a short clip, and watch it back, including at night.
Power is the other stop. Approved Document P is England's electrical-safety document. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland sit outside that English scheme, and this page does not set their rules out. Use a competent electrician for a mains outdoor light wherever the house is. Get permission before you drill a rented or listed wall. Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, ties satisfactory quality to the description and the price.
Which comparison to open
Open one comparison for the job you have, then stop. Sound and no picture: the wireless doorbell comparison. A front door camera that can ring a phone or a plug-in chime: the Wi-Fi doorbell comparison. A separate camera from this ABUS set: the ABUS security camera comparison. Prices here are amazon.co.uk shelf prices from 15 October 2026.
