Electric lock for a door entry system

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a monitor that claims to open the door, and you have not yet asked what happens when the power fails. An electric lock for a door entry system is that question. In this amazon.co.uk set, one listing puts a lock kit in the box and five say the monitor works with a lock you still have to buy. None of them tells you whether that lock fails safe or fails secure. What is actually in the box

Only the Digiteck 903, ASIN B01KZHONLO, at £194.00, lists an electric lock kit and a power supply in the box line, beside the outdoor unit. It is an audio door phone. The name says 3-way. The box line does not say three indoor handsets. Fail-safe or fail-secure is not stated for that lock kit. Three captured UK reviews from 2017 to 2019 say it worked or was right for the job. They do not describe the lock when you pull the fuse. The video kits are compatibility claims. The uoweky 4.3 inch, B07SX3NY45, says you can connect an electric lock and open it from the monitor. The lock is not listed as included. The uoweky 7 inch, B07P4DGCP8, says the kit applies to electronic locks. ANJIELO SMART B0F6LGP1MW says it works with an electronic lock if you fit a power controller. The included-components line lists a doorbell and a monitor. Compatibility is not inclusion.

Fail-safe and fail-secure

The two behaviours are opposites, and the monitor brand does not choose them. The Tynetec Entel Ultra installation guide, written for that company’s panel, puts it in plain words. A magnetic lock fails safe: power holds it locked, so a power cut lets the door open. A basic electric strike fails secure: power is what opens it, so a power cut leaves it locked. Those sentences are a definition. They are not a wiring diagram for the uoweky or the ANJIELO. A gate you want to stay shut in a power cut is a different choice from a lobby you must be able to leave when the supply dies. No listing in this set states which behaviour its own lock, or its lock output, provides. You match the lock to the door, then you check that the monitor can drive it.

A gate is not the same terminal

One detailed review of the uoweky V70N, B07P4DGCP8, measured about 3 V on the lock terminals at rest and about 12 V when the release button was pressed. An automatic gate opened and stayed open until a relay was added. The monitor was not offering a dry contact. If your gate expects a volt-free pair, a relay sits between the monitor and the gate. B0F6LGP1MW at least says a power controller is required for the lock. That is an honest extra part. It is still not a statement of fail-safe or fail-secure. RFID on the uoweky titles, and an ID card on B0DWSND7WN, is another way to release the door. It does not replace the behaviour of the lock when the power fails. The reader is not the lock.

The communal door and when you stop

Approved Document B, volume 1, says powered locks on escape routes should unlock on a fire-alarm signal, on power failure or a system error, and from a manual override. The fastening paragraphs are noted as not applying to flat entrance doors. A communal entrance is not a flat entrance door. This page does not assign a BS 7273-4 category of actuation to your block. Not every communal door must be fail-safe. The condition is the escape route, the fire strategy, and the lease, not the fact that three flats share a path. If you are unsure whether this door is on an escape route, you stop. Cable pulling is a different job, on the how to install a 3 flat video intercom page. Whether you needed a camera is on the video or audio intercom for flats page.

Common questions

What is fail-safe?
Fail-safe, in the Tynetec guide’s wording for a magnetic lock, means power holds the door locked. If the supply fails, the magnet lets go. None of these amazon listings states that its lock is fail-safe.
What is fail-secure?
Fail-secure, in that same Tynetec wording for a basic strike, means power is required to open the door. A power cut leaves the strike locked. These listings do not state which type they supply.
Does the monitor button suit an automatic gate?
Not always. On B07P4DGCP8 a reviewer measured about 3 V at rest and about 12 V when the button was pressed, and the gate stayed open until a relay was added. If the gate wants a dry contact, that voltage is the wrong signal.
What should happen when the power fails on a block entrance?
If the door is on an escape route, Approved Document B says a powered lock should unlock on fire alarm, on power loss or system error, and from a manual override. If you cannot tell which case you have, stop and ask a competent person.
Do the escape-route paragraphs apply to a flat’s own front door?
The fastening paragraphs in Approved Document B are noted as not applying to flat entrance doors. Your own flat door is the case that note points at. The shared entrance to the block is a different door.
Who should design the release on a stair or lobby door?
A competent person who can see whether the door is an escape route, how the fire alarm should release it, and whether the monitor offers a voltage or a dry contact. BS 7273-4 is the code those installers use. This comparison does not assign a category to a block it has not seen.
