How to install an outdoor security camera

Updated: 16 October 2026

The camera is in the box and the bracket is still on the kitchen table. This guide to how to install an outdoor security camera starts with Wi-Fi at the final height and a lens that stays on your own property, then the mount, then power, then the app. The [outdoor security camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/outdoor-security-camera) is the twelve amazon.co.uk listings from 15 October 2026. This page does not rank them. Products Compared did not lab-test a bracket. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost.

Check the signal and the view before you drill

Stand where the camera will live, not beside the router, and open the live view before you mark a hole. The GALAYOU R6 and the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus are stated as 2.4 GHz, and the EZVIZ C8c pair is 2.4 GHz only, so a 5 GHz-only network will not run those three. If the picture already includes a neighbour, the pavement or a communal path, you owe a sign, less footage, secure storage and a reply if someone asks for a copy. Mounting higher to hide a view someone has objected to is not a fix.

How high to mount an outdoor security camera

Ring’s positioning article says outdoor cameras are designed to be mounted 2.5 to 3 metres from the ground, with about a 20-degree tilt. Planning Portal’s not less than 2.5 metres line is a permitted-development condition for CCTV as building work, not Ring’s performance height. Keep the two 2.5 metre figures apart. Permission is not normally required, unless the building is listed or in a conservation area.

When the install is electrical work

In England, the IET’s Part P guidance treats notifiable work as a new circuit, a consumer-unit change, or work in a bath or shower zone. Replacing a light fitting is the example of work that is not notifiable, including outdoors, if it is not a new circuit. You still have to be competent. UK mains are 230 V and plugs are BS 1363. Wales treats more outdoor electrical alterations as notifiable. Scotland and Northern Ireland do not use England’s Part P wording. A 12 V adaptor for the Septekon, the EZVIZ pair or the 7 W Tapo TC40 is not the same job as hardwiring a floodlight.

A Ring floodlight is not a plug-in camera

The Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus, at £69.99, uses existing wiring. Ring’s install article says turn the power off at the fuse box, connect the earth, do not use a dimmer or timer, and supply 100–240 V on a wall or an eave. Do not screw the unit up before you scan the QR code. This page does not give a terminal-by-terminal sequence. Ring calls the unit water resistant, not for underwater use and not for pressurised water. Do not upgrade that to IP65. Who should buy the floodlight is on the best outdoor security camera page, and battery versus mains is on the battery or wired outdoor security camera page.

What to confirm before you put the ladder away

Open the live view from the ground and walk the path you use. If you see the tops of heads, adjust the tilt before you finish. The Blink Outdoor 4 allows up to two privacy zones. A zone does not replace a sign if the frame still crosses the boundary.

Common questions

How do you install an outdoor security camera without drilling in the wrong place?
Test Wi-Fi at the bracket height, and check that the lens stays on your property, before you mark a hole. Pair the camera, or scan a Ring floodlight’s QR code, while you can still move it. Then fix the bracket. Stop if the cable for a hardwired light is damaged.
How high should you mount it?
Ring’s positioning article says 2.5 to 3 metres from the ground, with about a 20-degree tilt. Too high, too low, or facing a window hurts the picture and motion detection. Planning Portal’s not less than 2.5 metres line is a permitted-development condition for CCTV as building work, not Ring’s performance height.
Do you need planning permission for a home camera?
Planning permission is not normally required. Ask the local planning authority if the building is listed or in a conservation area. Building regulations do not generally apply to the camera itself, though a new electrical circuit is notifiable. The Portal’s limits on camera size and number are planning conditions. They are not a mounting guide for these Wi-Fi cameras.
When is replacing an outdoor light notifiable in England?
In England, notifiable work is a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, or altering a circuit in a bath or shower zone. Replacing a light fitting is the IET’s example of work that is not notifiable, including outdoors, if it is not a new circuit. A damaged cable or a missing earth is a stop.
Does the same electrical rule apply in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland?
No. Wales treats more outdoor electrical alterations as notifiable, so England’s replacing a light example does not copy across. Scotland and Northern Ireland do not use England’s Part P text. If you are outside England and unsure which rule applies to your light, stop and ask a qualified electrician rather than finishing the floodlight from an English FAQ.
When should you call an electrician instead of finishing the Ring floodlight?
Call one for a new circuit, a consumer-unit change, a damaged outdoor cable, a missing earth, or uncertainty outside England. Ring says turn the power off at the fuse box, connect the earth, avoid a dimmer or timer, and use 100–240 V. Scan the QR code before you screw the Floodlight Cam Wired Plus up. This is not a plug-in 12 V camera.
