Battery vs wired video doorbell

Updated: 16 October 2026

You rent a flat and cannot open the door frame, or you own a house with a bell transformer, and a product page has offered a 180-day battery and the old wires as if they were the same doorbell. They are not. This battery vs wired video doorbell page is that one choice inside six amazon.co.uk listings. The [Wi-Fi doorbell comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/wifi-doorbell) keeps the full table, from £9.34 to £109.99. The Products Compared editorial team read the power lines and the UK reviews on 15 October 2026. We did not run a battery down. Choose a battery when you cannot add wiring and you can charge the pack. Choose wires or a plug-in adapter when you want the doorbell awake.

When a battery is the right row

A battery suits a flat where the lease forbids new wiring or the bell pair is missing. Five listings are battery units. The FineLuck at £9.34 states no capacity. The Miangerrn at £17.90 is a 5 volt pack and names 3M adhesive or screws. The D205 at £34.99 states 5,200 mAh. The TD21 at £44.99 states 6,400 mAh, with the chime in the box. The Ring at £49.99 uses a quick-release pack. Brackets are on the how to install a Wi-Fi doorbell page. The other checks are on the Wi-Fi doorbell buying guide.

What the 180-day claim does not promise

The 180-day figure is the maker's test condition on the D205 and the TD21, not a busy-pavement result. D205 reviews include 4–5 days, about three weeks, and 56 days. TD21 reviews include about three to four months, and about 60 percent after six weeks of recording. Buy a battery if you can charge on that sort of interval. Where clips go is on the Wi-Fi doorbell with no subscription page.

When wires or a plug-in adapter are the point

The Reolink at £109.99 is the wired or plug-in row: 24 volts, 6 watts, no battery, with an adapter, a chime, and a 15° wedge in the box. The adapter still needs a socket and a cable. The bullets state a 6-second pre-roll. Ring's GB support article describes advanced pre-roll as a wired feature, so this page does not promise that buffer on the battery Ring. The D205's 230 volts cell, beside a battery, is not a wiring specification.

Old bell wires are not a wired doorbell

A Ring battery doorbell on the old bell pair is a trickle charge inside Ring's window, not a second Reolink. Ring's UK wiring article puts compatible wiring at 8–24 VAC and 5–40 VA. Below that window, or with no transformer you can identify, the wires are not a plan. A wired install may silence the old chime. Do not connect any of these doorbells to 230 volt mains. If the chime is marked 230 V, stop. In England and Wales, a new mains transformer or work in the consumer unit is Part P under BS 7671, for a registered electrician. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not that scheme. A lease that forbids the bracket is a stop before any wire is touched.

Common questions

When is a battery doorbell the right choice in a UK flat?
Choose a battery when you cannot add wiring, the lease allows the bracket or the adhesive, and you can charge or swap the pack. Five of these six listings are battery units. The Miangerrn names 3M adhesive or screws. You still need Wi-Fi at the door and a card or a plan for the clips. A shared landing in the frame is an ICO question as well as a drilling question.
What does 180 days actually describe?
It is the maker's test condition on the Tapo D205 and the Tapo TD21, not a busy-street result and not a test we ran. D205 reviews include 4–5 days, about three weeks, and 56 days. TD21 reviews include about three to four months, and about 60 percent left after six weeks with recording on. Match the interval to how busy your step is. Do not average them into one number.
Can I power a battery Ring from the old bell wires?
Ring's UK wiring page allows existing doorbell wiring at 8–24 VAC and 5–40 VA, as a trickle charge. That does not turn the Ring into the wired Reolink. The old chime may go silent. If you cannot read the transformer, or the chime is marked 230 V, stop. The amazon.co.uk file for this Ring ASIN does not itself answer the hard-wire question.
Which listing is actually wired or plug-in?
The Reolink, at £109.99. The table says corded electric, 24 volts, 6 watts, and batteries are not required. The box includes a power adapter. The other five listings are battery doorbells. The D205's 230 volts cell sits beside a battery and is not a mains diagram.
Why do people want wires for the seconds before the ring?
A powered doorbell can keep a short buffer before the button. The Reolink bullets state a 6-second pre-roll. Ring's GB support article describes advanced pre-roll as a wired feature. A battery that sleeps until it sees motion can miss the approach if the wake is slow, which D205 reviews report as a delay of a few seconds.
Will the existing chime still sound?
It may not, once a video doorbell uses the old wires. Ring says a wired install may silence the existing chime. A battery install that never touches those wires leaves the old sounder alone. The D205 does not include an indoor hub, so that parcel does not add a hallway sounder by itself.
When is the transformer an electrician's job?
When the supply is 230 volts, when the transformer is missing or under the maker's VAC and VA figure, or when you would open the consumer unit. In England and Wales that mains work is Part P under BS 7671. Call a qualified electrician rather than treating the transformer as a choice you finish with the doorbell's screws.
