Ring doorbell buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

This Ring doorbell buying guide keeps one order: power, then whether the battery comes off the wall, then the video line, then the box, and only then the plan. The 12 listings in our [Ring doorbell comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/ring-doorbell) run from about £29.99 to about £89.98. Those are shelf prices, not Ring’s list prices. We assembled this on 21 October 2026 from the listings and Ring’s UK pages. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with power

Power is a battery, the existing bell circuit, or a lead to a socket. No cable or a rental you will not drill: B0FHJ91JY5 at about £39.99, pack inside the body, whole unit indoors on USB-C. A low-voltage transformer in range: the wired Retinal 2K at about £29.99 (B0FJJM9R3Z). Ring’s battery hardwire note is about 8–24 V AC and about 5–40 VA. The wired 2K must bypass the old mechanical chime. Mains bell wiring is not a compatible circuit. The third path is B0GP7BKQDW at about £39.99, Ring’s plug-in adaptor, 24 V DC at 500 mA. A random 24 V supply is not that part. Detail stays on the battery or wired page.

Built-in pack or quick-release

The pack is the difference even when two titles both say Retinal 2K. The about £39.99 model is built in, so the door is blind while it charges. Plus means a quick-release pack, and the doorbell can stay up if you own a spare. The 1536p Plus is about £49.99 (B09WZBVWL9). The Retinal 2K Plus is about £69.99 (B0F6436L5P). Reviewers on the 2K Plus say an old spare can fit, and that the new holes do not match the older mount. Do not assume every Plus trickle-charges from the bell wires. Those notes are comments, not a promise on every title.

Read the video line

Retinal 2K, with up to 6x zoom, is the wired doorbell, the about £39.99 battery doorbell, and the about £69.99 Plus. The about £49.99 Plus and the about £59.99 chime box (B0FQCF3L3D) say 1536p HD. Zoom is not stated on those rows. Colour night vision is in the battery 2K and 1536p Plus bullets, and it is not in the plain wired 2K bullets. If you think every Plus is 2K, read the title again. The 2K Plus states colour in low light and black and white in darkness, £20 more than the 1536p Plus here.

Chime, camera, or doorbell alone

A doorbell-only box does not include a Ring chime, and the wired 2K does not drive the old bell. Chime in the same order: B0GP8CKTBJ at about £39.99, the 1536p Plus and chime at about £59.99, and the 2K Plus and chime at about £79.99 (B0GP8Y5H6J). A second camera is another box: indoor bundles at about £59.98, the 2K Plus with a 1080p indoor camera at about £89.98 (B0GP85518D), and a Stick Up Cam at about £59.99 (B0GPYB7T5R). Two Solo plans cost more over a year than one Multi plan, on the subscription page. Who stops at which box is on the best Ring doorbell page.

Common questions

Do I need existing bell wires?
You do not, if you buy a battery doorbell and accept that charging means taking the unit down. The about £39.99 Retinal 2K is the listing here for a door with no cable. You still need Wi-Fi at the door. Existing low-voltage wires matter for the wired 2K. Most Plus bullets do not say the pack trickle-charges.
Why pay for Plus if both say 2K?
You pay so the pack comes off. The about £39.99 battery doorbell and the about £69.99 Plus both say Retinal 2K and up to 6x zoom. The Plus uses a quick-release pack, so a spare can charge while the doorbell stays up. The cheaper model comes off the wall for every charge.
Is a 1536p Plus the same as Retinal 2K?
No. In this set the about £49.99 Plus says 1536p HD. The about £69.99 Plus says Retinal 2K. Both use a quick-release pack. The £20 between them is a video-line difference, not a chime and not a second camera.
Should I buy the chime in the same box?
Buy it in the same box if you have no other Ring chime and you do not expect the old mechanical bell to sound. The wired 2K does not support that old chime. The chime bundles add the speaker. They do not add a transformer or a plug-in adaptor unless the title says so.
Does a second camera change the plan I will need?
It can. One doorbell can sit on a Solo plan. A doorbell plus an indoor camera or a Stick Up Cam is two devices at one address, and Ring’s Multi plan covers every device at that address. Two separate Solo plans cost more over a year than one Multi plan.
What still works if I never subscribe?
Live View, real-time motion alerts, and two-way talk are described without a plan. Saved video, including up to 180 days, is sold separately. Person and package alerts on the 1536p Plus rows are tied to a subscription. A 30-day trial is not named in the saved listings for B0GTZSTQQM or B0FQCF3L3D.
What must this page not call the best?
It must not crown one doorbell. There is no amazon.co.uk star average in these saved listings, three Plus files share reviewer names, and a 4K Pro is not in the set. A low shelf price is a fact about the listing. It is not a test score.
