Arlo wired or battery camera: three different kinds of power

Updated: 22 October 2026

You can put a socket by the door, or you can face a ladder twice a year, and the box still says wireless. An Arlo wired or battery camera choice is really three products in this set: a USB lead into a plug, a rechargeable pack you take down to charge, and a mains floodlight that is a light fitting. Wireless means no Ethernet cable. It does not mean the camera runs without power, and it does not mean it works without Wi-Fi. Shelf prices are on the [Arlo camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/arlo-camera). This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools. No lab test.

Three different wires

A plug-in Arlo uses a USB lead and a socket you already have. The outdoor pan-tilt pair is £104.99 with a 4.8 m outdoor USB-C cable each, and its listing marks batteries as required even though the power source is corded. The indoor pan-tilt is £69.99 and the indoor fixed pair is £58.49. Both say batteries are not required. A battery Arlo screws under an eave with no new cable: the Essential 2 at £49.99, the XL pair at £109.00, and the Pro 6 kits from £174.99, with spare batteries and a dual charger. You still charge indoors. These battery listings are not a permanent outdoor USB install. The floodlight, model FLW2001, is the third thing: £99.99, wired, 2K, up to 2,000 lumens, with a junction box in the box and a blank power-source field. Which picture is sharper stays on the best Arlo camera page.

What Arlo says a battery lasts

Arlo’s battery FAQ, updated 13 January 2026, gives average-use figures for a battery-saving profile and under three minutes of recording a day. On that rule, a standard Essential 3rd-gen battery is about four months, a Pro 6 is about nine months, and an Essential 3rd-gen XL is about 16 months. A drive that sees every passing car will be shorter. The XL pair is 3.6 from 67 reviews, and one camera in a pair needed three charges in 19 days. Buy the Pro 6 two-camera kit at £174.99 if you would rather swap a spare from the dual charger. A UK winter shortens this further. Activity zones need the plan on the Arlo Secure subscription page.

When the floodlight is an electrician’s job

A USB lead from a socket you already have is not a new circuit. The floodlight can be different. In England, a new outdoor circuit is notifiable under Part P, and GOV.UK’s route is a registered competent person. If you are replacing a floodlight and you are not sure the circuit is sound, stop. Two of the 32 floodlight reviews are from the United Kingdom, both positive, and neither is an install diary. IP65 is jets, not a submerged light. Continuous recording starts at £12.99 per camera per month and the camera has to be on mains. A battery Pro 6 does not become eligible because you own a charger indoors. The first join, once you have chosen a USB or battery camera, is on how to set up an Arlo camera.

Which listing matches which choice

Choose a lead when the camera will stay put: the indoor fixed pair at £58.49, the indoor pan-tilt at £69.99, which cannot join a SmartHub, or the outdoor pan-tilt at £104.99 on a 4.8 m lead. Choose a battery when you cannot run a cable. The Essential 2 at £49.99 has one report of a 60 percent drop in 12 hours. The Pro 6 two-camera kit is the smallest carton with spare batteries and a dual charger. Choose the floodlight only when you want the lamp and you can wire it properly. It is the wrong substitute for a USB camera.

Common questions

How long does an Essential battery last?
Arlo’s FAQ of 13 January 2026 says about four months for a standard Essential 3rd-gen battery, on a battery-saving profile, under three minutes of clips a day. A busy road is shorter. A UK winter is likely to be shorter as well. One Essential 2 review reports about 60 percent of the charge gone in 12 hours, so a single bad unit can miss the average by a long way.
Does XL mean I will not charge it for a year?
Only as Arlo’s average, about 16 months, under three minutes of clips a day. It does not mean a road-facing camera will last the year.
Can I leave a battery camera on a charging cable outside?
These battery listings are sold with an indoor charging cable, not with the 4.8 m outdoor lead that comes with the outdoor pan-tilt pair. Do not treat a standard battery Essential as a permanent outdoor plug-in. If you want it on a lead in the weather, the outdoor pan-tilt is the pack that includes that cable, and it is a different camera.
Do I need an electrician for a USB camera?
No. A USB lead into an existing socket is not a new garden circuit. You do need an electrician, or a competent person under the building regulations, for a new outdoor circuit in England, which is the floodlight case when there is no suitable supply. Do not open a junction box to find out.
Which wired cameras in this set cannot use a SmartHub?
The outdoor pan-tilt pair at £104.99 and the indoor pan-tilt pair at £69.99. Arlo says Essential pan-tilt cameras cannot pair with a SmartHub, and reviewers report the same limit. A lead does not add hub recording. The indoor fixed pair is a different model. It is still sold here without a hub in the box.
