How to set up an Arlo camera on a home router

Updated: 22 October 2026

The camera is out of the box, the phone is on the kitchen Wi-Fi, and the app says it cannot find the device. That is the usual first failure, and it is usually the band, not a dead camera. How to set up an Arlo camera on a UK mesh router starts with the phone on 2.4 GHz, beside the router, with the camera charged or plugged in. Prices for the packs in this set are on the [Arlo camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/arlo-camera). This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools. No lab network.

What has to be true before the app will find it

Arlo’s UK setup page says a direct-to-router install starts on 2.4 GHz. Many home routers use one network name for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and then steer the phone onto 5 GHz. If the phone is on 5 GHz only, the app will not see the network you think you selected. Before the pairing screen, allow Bluetooth for the Arlo Secure app, wake the camera, and put the phone on the same 2.4 GHz network. Arlo’s discovery page puts the camera about 3 to 4.5 metres from the router. A garden mount is the wrong place for the first attempt. None of these packs includes a SmartHub, so choose connect-without-hub. Essential pan-tilt cameras cannot join a base station even if you own one. Pro 6 is sold as dual-band. The first join is still 2.4 GHz. Model choice stays on the Arlo camera buying guide.

The setup sequence

Create or sign in to the Arlo account, pick the model in the picture, and choose connect-without-hub. Join the phone to 2.4 GHz first, then type the Wi-Fi password. It is case-sensitive. One wrong capital is enough to fail the join. The button and the light are whatever the app draws. Arlo’s Essential outdoor 2nd-generation steps say to hold the pairing button until the LED flashes blue. Essential 3 and Pro 6 do not share that diagram. If a QR code will not scan, type the serial under it. Stay within about 3 to 4.5 metres until the app says online. Do not carry the camera to the shed mid-pair. Once it is online, aim it at your own path or room, not the pavement, and check the live picture before you drill. A camera that joined by the router can still drop in a rear alley. Pairing does not turn on cloud history.

When it still says not found

Move closer before you change accounts. Repeat Arlo’s checks: 2.4 GHz, a case-sensitive password, about 3 to 4.5 metres from the router, and the LED still in the pairing pattern. Turn a VPN off. If one network name hides both bands and you cannot turn steering off, stop retrying. Ask the broadband provider how to pin the phone to 2.4 GHz. Do not open the fuse board, and do not invent a sync button the app has not drawn. A camera that joins and then shows offline at the door is a different fault. Bring it back to the router. If it comes online there, the garden Wi-Fi is the limit. An extender that repeats 5 GHz only will not fix a 2.4 GHz join.

After it is online

Name the camera for the place, so an alert at night tells you which door. Walk through the live view after dark once. Colour night vision on these listings is the spotlight kind, so check that the lamp is aimed at your own boundary. Use a unique Arlo password, turn on two-step verification if the app offers it, and install updates. From 29 April 2024, UK product-security rules ban universal default passwords on consumer connectable products. The NCSC gives the same advice for home cameras. If cloud clips matter, open the plan before the trial ends. Activity zones are a plan feature, not a toggle in the pairing wizard. What remains is on the Arlo Secure subscription page.

Common questions

Do I need the SmartHub to set an Essential camera up?
No. None of these packs includes a SmartHub, and the app path is to connect without one. A hub is for local storage on models that support it. Essential pan-tilt cameras cannot pair with a hub even if you add one later. Setup and local recording are separate purchases.
Can I set it up on 5 GHz?
Start on 2.4 GHz. Arlo says Essential 3rd-gen, pan-tilt, and Pro 5 cameras can use 5 GHz after they are installed, if the network name and password are the same. That is not the first screen. Pro 6 is sold as dual-band. The install page you are following still begins on 2.4 GHz.
What does a flashing blue light mean in Arlo’s own steps?
On the Essential outdoor 2nd-generation steps, Arlo tells you to hold the pairing button until the LED flashes blue. Other models in this set do not share that diagram. Use the light pattern the app shows for the camera in your hand.
The QR code will not scan. What then?
Type the serial printed with the code, which Arlo’s discovery help allows when the scan fails. Hold the code flat, in ordinary room light, within the distance the app shows. A failed scan is not a reason to switch the phone to 5 GHz.
When should I ask my broadband provider rather than keep retrying?
Ask them when you cannot put the phone on 2.4 GHz because band steering is on and the hub app will not split the bands. That is a router setting, not a reason to open the consumer unit. If the bands are already split and the camera is still missing beside the router, use Arlo’s support with the model number.
