How to install CCTV cameras UK: prove a recording, then drill

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a carton in the hall and a drill on charge, and the temptation is to put the first camera on the brick before anyone has seen a picture. How to install CCTV cameras UK-style is the other order: plan the views and the law, power the kit on the floor, then mount, then lock the passwords and practise an export. The kit itself is chosen on the [security camera set comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/security-camera-set) and the [buying guide](/hub/electronic-surveillance/security-camera-set/sub/security-camera-set-buying-guide). This page is the sequence, including the point where you stop and call a professional.

Before you drill

Name the view before you drill: front door, drive, rear, and side. Point every lens at your own property. If a neighbour or the pavement sits in the frame, ICO rules apply, including a sign and a subject-access reply, usually within one calendar month. Planning permission is not normally required on an ordinary house in England. Listed buildings need a local check. Class F in England limits you to 16 cameras, four per wall, and 2.5 m. Do not copy that class into Scotland or Northern Ireland. A new 230 V circuit is Approved Document P. The wired versus wireless page is the architecture if you are still mixing cartons.

Power the kit on the floor

Power the kit on the floor before you drill. UK reviews of the SANNCE wired kit describe that habit. Fit the named hard drive if the DVR arrived empty, set a password that is not admin, record a minute, and open the clip. On a Tapo or GNCC pack, fit a microSD you already own, join 2.4 GHz if that is all the listing allows, and confirm a clip in the app. If the SANNCE Wi-Fi kit will not join a dual-band router, reviewers forced 2.4 GHz. If the listing cannot agree how many cameras shipped, stop.

Fit cameras and the recorder

Trade blogs often sit a camera about 10 ft up. That is not the 2.5 m Class F figure in England. Use a detector, and seal the hole. IP66 or IP67 does not rate the cable join. Keep the recorder out of a hot loft. Indoor packs need a socket within a lead that is often about 2 m. Blink outdoor cameras here use AA lithium cells; the Mini is plug-in. Call a professional for a new circuit, listed fabric, or a neighbour dispute.

Clock, sign, and a practice export

Set the clock to GMT or BST, change every default password, and practise an export before you need one. Keep the original recording and do not power the system down after an incident. Take about five minutes either side. GOV.UK language prefers the native format plus a player. Try a plain FAT32 drive if an encrypted stick fails. The page on kits without a subscription says which boxes hold a disk and why the Blink Core module is not a USB store. We will not invent 30 days on 1 TB.

Common questions

Do you need planning permission for cameras on a house?
Usually not, on an ordinary house in England. Listed buildings and conservation areas need a local planning check. Class F in England publishes limits of 16 cameras, four per wall, size, and 2.5 m. Scotland and Northern Ireland are a local check, not a copy of that class.
When is electrical work notifiable?
When you add a new 230 V circuit. That is Approved Document P in England and an electrician’s job. Plugging a 5 V adapter or a recorder into an existing socket is not that job. A bathroom zone or a listed fabric change is a reason to stop.
Should you mount cameras before you see a picture?
No. Power one camera and the recorder or the first indoor camera on the floor, set a password, and play a file back. SANNCE reviewers describe that habit for a reason. A hole you drilled for a dead head is a hole you cannot undrill.
How high should a camera sit?
High enough that a visitor cannot easily twist it, which trade blogs often put around 10 ft, and not below the 2.5 m Class F figure in England if you are relying on permitted development. Those are different numbers. Do not treat 10 ft as the legal minimum.
How do you give a clip to the police?
Keep the original. Do not switch the system off. Export native format plus a player if you can, with about five minutes either side. A compressed story from your phone is a poorer copy. This is not a guarantee they can use it.
Do you need a CCTV sign?
If the camera stays on your own property in the household way, data protection law is lighter. If other people beyond the boundary appear, the ICO expects you to tell them; a sign is the example they give. Aiming at the street is not simply legal.
What password and clock settings matter?
A unique password, not admin. A clock on GMT or BST that you check twice a year. A practice export you have already watched. Those three prevent the usual failed handover after a real incident.
