Electronic door lock buying guide

Updated: 16 October 2026

You have a front door, a bedroom, or a garage in mind, and the results call every one of them an electronic door lock. The twelve listings in our [electronic door lock comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/electronic-door-lock) are five mechanisms, and the wrong one will not fit. This electronic door lock buying guide sorts the door, then the flat battery or dead 12 V supply, then rain and the box, then the insurance schedule. Prices are amazon.co.uk captures from 15 October 2026. The Products Compared editorial team did not lab-test these locks. We may earn a commission if you buy through our links.

Match the lock to the door you already have

Start with the door, not the star rating. A lift-handle multipoint throws hooks only when you lift the handle. The anchors are the Simpled EF-SP at about £209.99 and the Ruveno RU-001 at about £199.99. The Nuki Smart Lock Ultra, at about £309.00, turns the barrel. It does not lift the handle. The Yale Keyless Connected, YD-01-CON-BL, is about £68.00, and the title names a 60 mm nightlatch that is not on the included line. A 12 V bolt or magnet stays locked only while powered.

What still opens the door when the battery or the supply dies

A lock that fits and then traps you is the next failure. Simpled and Ruveno name mechanical keys. Nuki names a rechargeable pack and a magnetic charge cable. Yale’s capture does not state an emergency supply, so do not borrow a 9 V port from another keypad. The La Macaza, both DHEISHA colours, and the TEKXDD name a USB port and say not to charge the cells. Four AAA batteries are not in those boxes. Uoonner, Kadongli, and the two Fredorlokk listings unlock when power is removed. That suits a cupboard, and it is wrong if the door must stay shut.

Rain, the box, and codes you can delete

Simpled says only the outside is weatherproof and the inside must stay dry. Power is blank on this capture, so do not fill a battery count or an IP55 rating from a retailer. A Wi-Fi bridge is named and is not included. Ruveno calls the front panel waterproof, and reviews report rain inside the lock. Its Alexa gateway is sold separately. Nuki is the listing where Wi-Fi and Matter are included. A lock with a radio sits inside the UK rules on default passwords, a vulnerability contact, and a published update period. Do not treat any of these twelve as compliant because the rules exist.

Read the insurance schedule before you take the old lock off

None of these twelve states BS 3621, BS 8621, TS 007, TS 621, or Secured by Design. Many timber final exits are still expected to have a BS 3621 lock. West Yorkshire Police advise a 3-star TS 007 cylinder, or Sold Secure SS312, on uPVC doors. Allianz UK’s magazine says most insurers still look for a traditional BS 3621 lock alongside smart locks, and that you should tell the insurer before you fit one.

Common questions

Which electronic door lock fits a uPVC door that locks when you lift the handle?
A handle that drives that lift. In this set that is the Simpled EF-SP or the Ruveno RU-001, and only if the handle already lifts to throw the points. A euro-cylinder motor turns the barrel after the handle is up. It does not replace the lift. If the handle on your door does not lift, neither of those two listings is the right mechanism.
Is a euro-cylinder motor the same thing as a new handle?
No. The Nuki Ultra replaces the euro cylinder and includes that cylinder, Wi-Fi, and Matter. A multipoint smart handle replaces the lever that lifts the hooks. You can have a cylinder behind a multipoint door and still need the handle lifted by hand. Buying the motor because it is electronic does not make it the handle.
Can I put a fingerprint handle on the front door?
The listings around £40 are what reviews describe on bedrooms and offices, on doors about 30–55 mm, and none of them states BS 3621 or TS 007. A house final exit in this comparison starts at the nightlatch keypad or a lift-handle multipoint. A fingerprint lever can be a second lock on an internal door. It is a weak choice as the only lock on the door the policy names.
What is a nightlatch, and what does 60 mm backset mean for the Yale keypad?
A nightlatch is the rim lock on many timber doors, the one you often slam shut. Backset is the distance from the face of the latch faceplate to the centre of the spindle. The Yale title names 60 mm. Generic mortice figures of about 45 mm or 57 mm are a different measurement and will not confirm this keypad. The nightlatch is not on the included line of this ASIN.
Will this lock satisfy my home insurance?
Not on the strength of the listing. None of the twelve states BS 3621, BS 8621, TS 007, TS 621, or Secured by Design. Tell the insurer before you remove the lock the schedule names. A timber door is often expected to keep a BS 3621 lock. A uPVC cylinder is often expected to be 3-star TS 007 or Sold Secure SS312. This page cannot say a claim will be paid or refused.
Is Wi-Fi or Alexa in the box?
Only if the included line says so. Nuki includes Wi-Fi. Ruveno’s Alexa gateway is sold separately, and Simpled names a Wi-Fi bridge that is not on the included line. Yale’s app needs a separate Access Module. Several fingerprint handles are Bluetooth at the door, even when a title says Wi-Fi. Read the included line before you pay for a feature that is a second box.
