1 apartment intercom system buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have one street door and a search page that treats a video doorbell, a room radio and a four-flat panel as the same thing. A 1 apartment intercom system is one outdoor call point and one indoor handset or monitor for a single dwelling, so you can speak to the caller and, where the lock allows, release the door. A second monitor in the same house is still one dwelling. This page is from Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, using amazon.co.uk listings rather than a lab test. Decide the door, the cable and whether a picture is the job before the brand. Ranked kits are in the [1 apartment intercom system comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/1-apartment-intercom-system).

What counts as one apartment

Start with the door, not the brand. One apartment here means one dwelling and one entrance. Three or four indoor stations sold as separate flats belong in a multi-apartment category, even if the title says home. A handset with no outdoor panel is a spare part. A phone-only video doorbell has no indoor monitor and no strike of its own. A room radio lets two people inside the house talk to each other. A second screen does not turn one house into two flats. What changes the category is a panel meant to call several apartments from a communal door. If your entrance is shared, stop. The best 1 way door entry system page assigns the four kits once you know you are in this category.

Cable and power before the brand

The cable already in the wall decides more than the badge on the box. Bell audio wants a twisted pair, CW1308 or Cat5e, with the red and orange cores kept as a pair. A 4-wire video kit needs those cores and does not include the run. A 2-wire bus is a different system. A single old bell pair is not enough for the wired video kits kept here. Alarm cable is the usual mistake, and Bell colours belong to Bell. Power is a separate gate. A plug-in supply on an existing socket, outside a bathroom, is a different job from a new circuit. Approved Document P makes a new circuit, a consumer-unit change, or work in a bath or shower zone notifiable in England. These listings do not show that every install needs building-control notice. Bell’s diagrams still say a competent person connects 230 V and isolates live and neutral. The audio or video door entry page is the next fork, once the cable is known.

Picture, recording and the lock

A handset confirms a voice. A screen shows the caller. Video is not an automatic upgrade, and it does not always include a release. The TMEZON listing says you can unlock from the indoor monitor. The ANJIELO listing says you can unlock from the app or the screen. The Bell 901 technical details do not list the box, so a release is not confirmed for that ASIN, even though a trade 901 page itemises a Model 203. The LUCINE listing does not state unlock or night vision. The lock is its own decision. A standard release suits a night latch on timber, inward opening, not a deadlock. Fail secure stays locked without power. Fail safe opens. An escape door needs a mechanical inside release or a fail-safe arrangement. None of these ASINs is shown as tested to BS EN IEC 62820-1-1, and none of them is a braille Equality Act kit. The strike choice is on the electric door release for a door entry system page.

What the shelves actually cost

The four amazon.co.uk prices in this set are £64.74 for the LUCINE (3.9 from 18), £88.46 for the Bell 901 (4.2 from 71), £135.99 for the TMEZON (4.1 from 153, with three scraped reviews marked United Kingdom) and £329.99 for the ANJIELO (5.0 from 1). A rule of thumb only: wired audio for one door often sits under about £120, basic wired video about £65 to £160, and app wireless video often above £250. A trade page lists a Bell 901 kit with panel, 801 handset and Model 203 at £94.44. Listing B0066PTTHI does not itemise that box, so do not treat £88.46 as the same parcel. Installer guides quote about £350 to £700 fitted for single-dwelling audio and about £550 to £1,200 for house video. Those are not Amazon shelves. The LUCINE listing says IP54. UK reviews include a door camera that was not weatherproof and failed, including once within 8 months. IP65 on the TMEZON listing is seller text.

What to settle before the model table

If the entrance is shared, leave this category. If the door is one dwelling, match the cable you already have, then decide whether you need a face or only a voice. A plug-in supply on an existing socket is a different job from a new circuit. Settle the latch before you use the model table.

Common questions

Is this the same as a video doorbell?
No. A 1 apartment intercom system has an outdoor call point and an indoor handset or monitor for one dwelling. A video doorbell is a phone-only camera. Room radios and multi-flat panels are different products again. If the listing has no indoor station, it is not the kit this guide is sorting.
Does one extra monitor make it a two-flat system?
No. A second monitor in the same house is still one dwelling. The TMEZON kit is sold as two monitors for one family. A UK review fitted the extra screen upstairs so nobody had to walk down. It becomes a different category when the panel is meant to call several flats from a shared entrance.
What cable is already in the wall?
Bell audio wants twisted pair, CW1308 or Cat5e, with red and orange kept as a pair. The wired video kits here need four cores, and the TMEZON box does not include the extension, only a 1 metre test cable. A single bell pair is not enough for those video kits. A 2-wire bus is a different system.
Is the lock release in the box?
Not as a rule. The Bell 901 amazon.co.uk listing does not itemise the box, so the release is not confirmed, even though a trade 901 page names a Model 203. The TMEZON and ANJIELO listings state unlock. The LUCINE listing does not. Check the latch before you assume the button will open the door.
Will it fit a uPVC door?
A standard kit release is for a timber night latch, inward opening, not a deadlock. One UK review of the Bell 901 listing left the door-entry part unused because the frame was uPVC. A multipoint composite door needs the lock identified first, not a timber strike forced into the frame.
When does a camera make you a data controller?
When the camera films beyond your boundary. The ICO expects a reason, a sign, secure storage, deletion, and answers to people in the footage. A picture of your own path is a smaller case than a lens that records the pavement. A TF card does not cancel that duty.
