How to set up a security camera before you commit the mount

Updated: 16 October 2026

The camera is on the kitchen table and the bracket is still in the bag. This guide to how to set up a security camera starts with the view and the Wi-Fi at the final height, then the mount, then the app. The [security camera comparison](/hub/electronic-surveillance/security-camera) is the twelve amazon.co.uk listings from 15 October 2026. If the lens will see a neighbour, the pavement or a communal stair, stop before you stick anything. The Information Commissioner's Office says a home camera should capture your own property. Which body you should have bought is on the [security camera buying guide](/hub/electronic-surveillance/security-camera/sub/security-camera-buying-guide).

Check the view and the Wi-Fi before the bracket

Stand where the camera will live and open the live view before you commit the screws or the adhesive. A Ring indoor review says the picture wants a strong signal close to the router. A Ring outdoor review says that camera joins 2.4 GHz only, so a 5 GHz network name will not help it. The Tapo is single-band, with no hub, and reviews include hours offline. Several window titles claim 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, so test the band the title states. The Blink Outdoor 4 allows up to two privacy zones. False alerts are usually a zone you never drew.

Mount a window camera, or screw in the Tapo

Window cameras here are indoor. HomiQ claims peel-and-stick. The £49.99 PC340 includes the 18 degree bracket. The £39.98 one does not, and it is not recommended on double glazing. On double glazing the wansview wants the magnetic sticker, and a TF card formatted to FAT32 or exFAT. The Codnida lists only a manual, and reviews say the card often fails. The Tapo C210 is not tool-free. Screws and a template are in the box, and the card, up to 512 GB, is not included. Search the app store for TP-Link, not only Tapo. Glass and double glazing are on the window or outdoor security camera page.

A battery mount is not a floodlight circuit

The Blink includes a mounting kit and Sync Module Core. Live view is what reviewers say drains the AA cells, so do not leave the picture open and then blame the two-year claim. The Ring outdoor pack comes off to charge. The Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus uses existing wiring. It is not a plug-in adaptor. Call an electrician for a new circuit, a damaged cable, a missing earth, or any job you are not competent to finish. This page does not give a terminal diagram. The listing states no IP code. Do not upgrade the floodlight to IP65 because the Blink title uses that code.

Join the app, format the card, then cut the false alerts

Create the account in the maker's app, not a lookalike. For a card camera, format the card inside the app and enable local recording before you leave the house. The wansview wants FAT32 or exFAT. The HomiQ bullet allows up to 256 GB and the table says 256 MB. Ring and Blink trials last 30 days in these listings. When the trial ends, saved clips stop unless you pay or, on the Blink, unless you move to a Sync Module 2 and a USB stick. The Core module in the Blink box is not that stick. Put a reminder in the phone for day 25. The best security camera page is where the model choice sits, if setup has shown you bought the wrong body. Common questions

What should I check before I stick the camera to the glass?
Open the live view at the final height and confirm two things: the Wi-Fi holds, and the frame stays on your own property. Double glazing changes the mount on the wansview, and the cheaper Outinput says it is not recommended there. Adhesive is miserable to undo once it has set on the wrong pane.
How do I format the memory card?
In the camera's app, not only in a computer, and before you rely on playback. Outinput says to format the card and enable local recording. Wansview specifies FAT32 or exFAT. The card is sold separately on every card camera in this set. If the Codnida app reports a format and then saves nothing, that matches the reviews, and a second format may not fix it.
Where do privacy zones go?
Over the part of the picture you must not keep, such as a neighbour's window or a gate that flaps. The Blink allows up to two. A zone does not replace a sign if the pavement is still in shot. Draw it while you are standing outside, so you can see what the phone still records.
Do I need an electrician for the floodlight?
Yes, if you are not competent to use the existing light wiring, or the cable is damaged, or the earth is missing, or you need a new circuit. This page does not give a wire-by-wire method. A window camera's 5 volt plug is not that job.
Why does the camera drop off Wi-Fi?
Distance and the wrong band are the reasons these reviews name. Ring indoor owners want the camera near the router. One Ring outdoor review is 2.4 GHz only. Tapo owners report hours offline on a single-band camera. An extender is something a reviewer added. It is not in the Blink or Ring box list.
When should a professional take over, besides the wiring?
When the camera would film staff or a business, when a dispute with a neighbour has left the conversation stage, or when the only way up is a ladder or a roof you are not equipped to use. Pointing a plug-in camera at your own room is the ordinary case.
