Fireplaces and stoves

Updated: October 2026Hub page

Fireplaces and stoves is the fire and the kit around it for a UK home or garden. The cards cover electric fires and boiler stoves, outdoor pits, gas fires and cooking stoves, cooker hoods, and the fuel, liners, glass, guards and tools that sit with a solid-fuel fire.

Choose the card that matches the product, then a guide under it for fit, fuel or fitting. A plug-in flame effect, a stove that heats water, a patio pit and a bag of kindling are different products. The listing details stay on the comparison, so this page can stay put when a listing changes.

Guides for a British fire sit beside the product cards: what a smoke control area allows you to burn, how much wood a winter can take, and when smoke or a soot smell means you stop and book a sweep.

Common questions about fireplaces and stoves

What does this hub cover?
Fireplaces and stoves on this hub is the fire and the kit around it for a UK home or garden. The comparisons split electric fires, boiler stoves, outdoor pits and gas fires, outdoor cooking stoves, and cooker hoods. Further cards cover fuel and starters, fire bricks, log stores, stove glass cleaner, guards, tool sets, lighters and flue fans. Open a card for the current amazon.co.uk listings. Products Compared did not run a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
How do you choose an electric fire or a solid-fuel stove?
An electric fireplace on these pages plugs into a UK socket. It does not burn wood, so it does not need a flue or a smoke-control exemption. A solid-fuel stove burns logs or an authorised fuel and needs a suitable chimney, fuel your area allows, and sweeping. A boiler stove is the card for a stove that also heats water. If you want a flame effect without fuel, start with the electric fireplace comparison. If you already have a working flue, start with the fuel and sweep guides.
What can you burn in a smoke control area?
A smoke control area does not treat dry logs, kindling or a smokeless label as automatically allowed. Wood there belongs in a Defra-exempt appliance. Other fires use an authorised fuel. Ecodesign is a separate test, not that public exempt list. Your council names the area, and these pages do not check your postcode. The guides on smoke-control fuel and on an open fire versus a wood-burning stove set out that split. The product cards do not add a laboratory smoke result.
How do the outdoor cards differ?
An outdoor fireplace here is a wood or charcoal pit, bowl or chiminea for the garden. An outdoor gas fireplace burns propane. The listing may be a bowl or a fire-pit table, and a UK cylinder may need the right regulator. An outdoor stove is a cooker for the garden or a power cut, not a living-room wood burner. Smoke and neighbours have their own guide under the pit comparison. Match the card to the fuel before you compare size.
How do kindling, fatwood and a paper press differ?
Kindling is the small wood that carries a flame up to the logs, and that card also includes splitters. Fatwood is resin-rich sticks that catch from a lighter. Resin is a poor fuel under food. A paper briquette press turns paper into logs. Pressed newspaper is a starter at most. It is not a Ready to Burn wood briquette, and coloured print or cardboard is the wrong stock. Store kiln-dried logs off the ground, covered on top with the sides open, or moisture can climb again.
Why are fire brick and firebricks separate cards?
Both cards are liners, and they are not the same shortlist. Fire brick is for a wood-burner lining, with vermiculite and fireclay packs. Firebricks adds a pizza-oven job and a dense clay option beside vermiculite. Measure the brick you are replacing before you treat a pack as a match. The fitting guides sit under each card. These pages do not claim a brick is approved for your stove unless the listing says so.
What should you check on a guard, a fan or a glass cleaner?
A fireplace guard here is a spark screen or a nursery guard, and the fit is your opening. A magnetic stove fan in this set is a pipe fan. It needs a flue the magnet can hold. A cool stove top is a different fan. Stove glass cleaner is foam or a dry pad, and the manual decides whether mesh is allowed. Black glass is often a cold fire, wet logs or a shut airwash. Clean the glass cold, then fix the burn.
Is the chimney hood a stove part?
The chimney hood comparison is a kitchen cooker hood. You choose width, ducted or recirculating extraction, and how it is installed. It is not a cowl or a liner for a wood burner. If you are fitting a stove, use the sweep guides and the fuel cards. If you are fitting a hood over a hob, use the chimney hood comparison and the 60 cm or 90 cm guide under it.
Where should you start?
Start with the job. A living-room flame without wood is the electric fireplace card, the Klarstein card if you are already in that range, or a fireplace console if the fire and the television stand are one unit. A real fire starts with whether your area allows the fuel, then the logs, the store, the kindling and the sweep. A garden evening starts with a pit, a gas fireplace or an outdoor stove. Shelf prices stay on each comparison.
