Fireplace guard for a wood burner

Updated: 22 October 2026

The stove sits in an inglenook, the door is shut, and a toddler or a dog still has a straight run at the front. A fireplace guard for a wood burner is about that hot metal, not about a flue diagram. A closed door cuts the spark risk from an open coal grate. It does not stop a contact burn, and it does not stop a child climbing the hearth. This page stays on that scene, using the amazon.co.uk listings in the [fireplace guard comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fireplace-guard). Flue sizing, ventilation and signing off an install stay off this page. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Closed door, hot surfaces and children

A log burner with the door latched throws fewer sparks than an open fire. People still fit guards for children and pets, and a wall-fixed guard is the stronger arrangement. The door, the handle and the air controls are what a small hand meets. Glass that looks dark can still burn. A spark screen 10 cm in front of that glass may keep a dog’s nose off for a moment. It will not hold a toddler who can lift a 2 kg panel. GOV.UK and RoSPA treat a guard as something you add, not as a reason to leave a child alone. BS 8423 includes stoves and is about access and burns, not flying particles. Door ajar while the kindling catches is closer to an open fire, and none of the folding screens print BS 8423.

Wall-fixed guards on stoves

Two listings state BS 8423:2010 and screw to the wall. The Safetots Original adjusts from 84.5 cm to 155 cm, is 69 cm high and 44 cm deep, and weighs 6.2 kg at £36.90. UK reviews put it in front of stoves as well as fireplaces. The clips are stiff and the fixing-plate screws are fiddly when you need the front open to refuel. A quick release is stated, and the listing does not print an A2 amendment. The Babylo Premier is £34.99, up to 133 cm wide and 5.5 kg, and the bullets name solid fuel as well as gas and electric. Several UK reviews say the pictured front door is not in the box, so on a stove that needs logs you lift the guard or remove curved sections, then put it back. There is no quick release in that file. In a deep inglenook, check the 44 cm projection against the hearth. Drilling is worth it when a child lives in the house and the wall can take plugs. It is a poor plan where the landlord has not agreed to holes.

Folding screens near a stove

A folding screen can still suit sparks and a dog, if you accept what it cannot do. UK reviews mention a Selby in a wood-burner nook, sometimes with dog-pen panels at the sides. That is a spark and pet setup, about 85 cm by 64 cm and 2.44 kg, not a BS 8423 barrier. The Milton, about 96 cm by 60 cm at £23.95, is fine for pups in one review and not the screen that buyer would choose for children. The arched Kingson is 102 cm wide and 54 cm high, and the titles talk about babies without a BS 8423 line.

Mesh near a stove

Mesh does not belong against a working stove. The JINGEGECOME sheet is 50 g and the CLKUEH sheet is 97 g, both tape-fixed. A buyer of the woven mesh had not used it on a lit fire. Tape on a warm surround fails on the first hot evening. Call a competent solid-fuel installer, HETAS or otherwise, when you smell fumes, the flue has never been checked, or you are about to change the appliance.

Common questions

Do I need a guard if the stove door stays shut?
You need less spark protection than with an open grate, and you still have a hot door. A wall-fixed BS 8423 guard is the stronger setup in this set when someone small can reach the front. A shut door is not a reason to skip supervision while the body is hot.
Can I use a folding screen on a log-burner recess?
Yes, as a spark screen, if the width and height cover the opening and the hearth is stable. Reviewers put a Selby in a wood-burner nook. The screen can be knocked over, and it is not a nursery guard. Dog-pen side panels in a review are an extra, not a listed part.
Which listings state stove use?
Safetots reviews describe stove use, though the title is framed as fireplaces. Babylo’s bullets say solid fuel as well as gas and electric. Kingson states wood burners, log burners and open fires. Fire Vida bullets generally say coal or wood-burning fires, and UK reviews mention log burners. Mesh listings do not give you a stove-safe claim you can trust.
Will the guard frame get hot?
It might. Milton reviews contradict each other, and neither is a measured temperature. Do not tell a child the bars are cool. A wall-fixed guard keeps hands further back, at the 44 cm projection on the Safetots and Babylo lines, and the bars can still heat.
How do I refuel with a wall-fixed guard?
You open it or you move it, then you put it back. Safetots states a quick release, and reviews say the clips are stiff. Babylo reviews say there is no front door in the box, so you move the guard or remove curved sections. Do that before the stove is fully hot if you can, and do not leave the front off while a child is in the room.
Are mesh covers safe near a hot stove?
No. They weigh 50 g or 97 g, they stick on with tape, and they are not sold to BS 8423. Use them on a cold opening if you use them at all. A working stove wants a metal screen or a wall-fixed guard.
