Outdoor stove buying guide

Updated: 22.10.2026

An outdoor stove buying guide is the step before you sort by stars. You match a portable cooker to a canister, a cylinder, or dry wood you can buy in the UK, then check how many pans it will heat and whether the title includes fuel. The twelve amazon.co.uk listings in our [outdoor stove comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/outdoor-stove) run from about £16.99 to £55.99. Some are single-burner boxes, one is a Campingaz CP250 hob, one is a two-burner cylinder cooker, and one is a 450 g wood rocket. This page is that order of decisions. It does not light the stove, and it does not name a single winner. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the fitting before the brand

The fitting is the decision that makes the rest of the page useful. Campingaz CP250 is the resealable cartridge for Camp'Bistro-type stoves, and the Camp Bistro 3 names it on its own. BS EN 417:2012 covers non-refillable metal LPG cartridges. Several Green Haven pages print both codes, including the four-can DYN11691 at £25.99. This file does not show that the two interchange. The Chef runs on cylinders R907 and R904, and the hose and regulator are extra. Geepas, B2C and Olutula name a butane can and print neither code. The Ohuhu fuel field says wood while the power-source field says Gas Powered.

One pan, two pans, or a wood pot

One ring cooks one pan. It is a poor plan if pasta must boil while a sauce reduces. The Chef is the only two-hob cooker here: two 1,500 W burners plus a 1,500 W grill, outdoor only. The grill has no piezo. Pan size is printed on two listings: 12 to 26 cm on the Camp Bistro 3, and 13 to 30 cm on the B2C page. Scouts warn that an oversized pan can reflect heat onto the cartridge. The Chef's 14 and 8 hour runtimes belong to an R907 or R904, not to a CP250.

Weight, case, and cans in the price

The Ohuhu lists 450 g. Cartridge boxes here sit around 1.2 kg to 2 kg. The Chef is 3.99 kg before a cylinder. None of these is a backpacking canister stove. Saved prices run from about £16.99 to the Chef at £55.99. Fuel is in the price only when the title counts cans. Two Green Haven pairs share a star line, 4.3 from 2,703 and 4.0 from 79. The Camping and Caravanning Club says liquid butane struggles below about 4°C. None of these pages states a minimum temperature.

What indoor on a listing does not mean

Do not use a camping stove indoors or in a tent. You cannot smell the gas that makes you ill. Olutula and both slim Green Haven pages still claim indoor use. Camp Bistro 3 and the Chef say outdoor use only. Silence is not permission. A cartridge stove is generally outside the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 definition of a gas appliance. That is not a licence to fry on the worktop. The first light is how to use an outdoor stove.

Common questions

Are EN 417 and Campingaz CP250 the same canister?
No. EN 417 is the standard name for a family of non-refillable metal LPG cartridges. CP250 is Campingaz's own resealable cartridge for Camp'Bistro-type stoves, and a retailer answer on the Camp Bistro 3 describes it as a bayonet rather than an EN 417 screw can. This comparison does not show that the two lock into each other. If a listing prints both, treat that as mixed wording.
Which stoves here name CP250, EN 417, or both?
Camp Bistro 3 names CP250 and does not add EN 417 on the fields we saved. The Chef names cylinders R907 and R904, which are not cartridges. Several Green Haven pages name CP250 and EN 417 together, including the £25.99 four-can kit and the £16.99 case-only stove. The slim pages name EN 417 without CP250. Geepas, B2C, and Olutula print neither code.
What does the Campingaz Chef connect to?
It connects to Campingaz cylinders R907 and R904. The listing states 327 g/h and runtimes of 14 and 8 hours, which belong to those cylinders, not to a small cartridge. The included-components line is a lid, rack, and tray. Stored reviews say you supply the hose and regulator, and that the hose wants a jubilee clip fitted before the push-fit. It is outdoor only. A CP250 will not stand in for that cylinder.
Is one burner enough, and does the title include gas?
One burner is enough when you cook one pan at a time. Two hobs means the Chef, plus a cylinder. Fuel is included only when the title counts cans: four or eight on some Green Haven pages, two on the B2C kit. Camp Bistro 3 at £40.17, the Chef at £55.99, the Ohuhu at £21.99, and the £16.99 Green Haven do not count fuel in the title, so the shelf price is the hardware.
Can you trust a bullet that says you can cook indoors?
You should not. NHS says not to use a camping stove indoors or in a tent. Olutula and both slim Green Haven listings claim indoor use anyway. Camp Bistro 3, the Chef, and one Green Haven say outdoor only or not for inside use. A student-kitchen bullet does not override the NHS line. If the plan is a power cut, cook outside or do not cook on this stove.
Does a high star count mean two Green Haven listings were reviewed separately?
Not when the saved review file has already marked them as one sample. B09FFLVYLJ and B09FFNDNQK both show 4.3 from 2,703, with the same saved UK review themes. B0GP6ZZ648 and B0GP71NR36 both show 4.0 from 79. The £25.99 four-can DYN11691 at 4.4 from 831 is a different count and is the one this comparison treats as its own sample. Adding the shared figures together would invent reviewers the file does not contain.
