Best fatwood

Updated: 22.10.2026

You want one fatwood pack for a log burner you light most evenings, and perhaps a second pack that will actually fit in a coat pocket. Best only means something once that split is clear. Star ratings on amazon.co.uk mix countries, and the cheapest sticker in this set contradicts its own weight. This page names a conditional top pick for regular lighting, the close bulk alternative, the least painful pocket tin, and the listing to skip. Full criteria, including Ready to Burn, stay on the [fatwood buying guide](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fatwood/sub/fatwood-buying-guide). The rows are on the [fatwood comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fatwood). Prices are the amazon.co.uk figures in our files on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission.

Best for regular stove lighting

For a stove you light through the colder months, the top pick in this set is the Pure Garden 10 lb box, ASIN B08NRJDLN4. It is 4.54 kg at £28.64, about £6.31 per kilogram. The listing is 4.7 from 2,146 ratings. Two saved review texts are from the United Kingdom, both short and positive. Most other captured texts are from the United States, plus one from Australia. The seller says two or three sticks, including when the wood is damp. One reviewer says pine adds soot and that you should use it in moderation. Stick length and country of origin are not printed. There is no Ready to Burn logo. If you dislike pine smoke on the glass, do not force this winner. The type choice is fatwood or firelighters.

When Billy Buckskin is the one to pick

Choose Billy Buckskin, ASIN B09C2KFLC5, when you want the length written down and you accept a slightly higher price per kilogram. The box is also 4.54 kg, at £29.18, about £6.43 per kilogram. The seller says the sticks are about 8 inches long and about 0.3 to 1.25 inches thick, from pine stumps, and that you may need to hold a match on a thick piece so the resin flows. The listing shows 4.7 from 6,870 ratings. Every review text captured in the file is from the United States, so do not read the count as British experience of a British winter. A flavour line says hickory while the description says pine. One reviewer says some pieces in the box would not light. Another reports dark smoke and black residue in a pizza oven. Skip 4.54 kg if the camp is a walk rather than a car boot. Weight and open fires are on fatwood for camping.

Best pocket pack in this set

If you only need a tin, BIUDECO, ASIN B0G6XN83L9, is the lowest coherent price here: £11.48 for 177 g, about £64.86 per kilogram, in a 115 × 85 × 25 mm tin from China. The only review, from the United Kingdom on 8 October 2026, says the pack is small, that the yellow band mainly keeps the lid on, and that it seems alright as a spare to store. One rating of 5.0 is not a grade. ADOCARN at £15.75 for 180 g, about £87.50 per kilogram, has the clearer UK sentence: on 23 January 2026 a reviewer wrote that it lights well, against a listing rating of 5.0 from 3. Pay that premium only if you want a lighting comment more than the lower sticker. Garneck at £15.39 for 177 g has no reviews. The rubber band and the yellow band are lid retainers, not a waterproof rating.

The pack to skip

Leave ASIN B0GRTGRSVR, at £4.59, off any shortlist. The title says 50 g and 12 inch fatwood. The technical details say 28 g and 10.21 × 1.7 × 1.91 cm. There is no brand and no review text. Do not calculate a price per kilogram, and do not treat the word waterproof in the title as a test. A top pick is not a Defra exemption. Fatwood is wood. In a smoke control area you still need an appliance that may burn the fuel the manufacturer allows, and you still must not send smoke up a chimney. Nothing here was lit in a lab.

Common questions

Are Billy Buckskin's reviews from the UK?
The rating line is on amazon.co.uk: 4.7 from 6,870. Every review text saved for that ASIN in our file is from the United States. Do not describe those comments as British opinion of a British stove. Use Pure Garden if a UK review text is what you wanted.
Why not the £4.59 pack?
The title and the technical details disagree. One line says 50 g and 12 inches. The other says 28 g and about 10 cm. The £11.48 BIUDECO tin at least has one weight.
Is a specialist bundle better than these tins?
It can be, for a single trip. A bushcraft seller may offer a few sticks for under £4, and Forest Skills has listed a three-stick offer near £1.38 with postage. Those are not the ASINs in this comparison. Among the amazon.co.uk tins we kept, BIUDECO is the lowest price with a single agreed weight.
Can the best fatwood go on an open fire in a smoke control area?
Only if that fire is allowed where you live. Wood up a chimney in a smoke control area is restricted to authorised fuel or to a Defra-exempt appliance used as the manufacturer says. A top-pick box does not change that. If you cannot tell which appliance you have, ask a sweep or the installer.
Who should skip fatwood?
Skip it if you want a short, low-odour light under dry kindling and you dislike resin smoke on the glass. A wood-wool lighter is the usual UK stove habit for that job. Also skip a 4.54 kg box if you will only light a fire a few times, and skip any listing that will not state one weight.
