Wood stove buying guide: cook stove or tent flue

Updated: October 2026

If you typed wood stove into amazon.co.uk, you may be looking at a picnic cooker and a tent heater as if they were the same thing. They are not. This wood stove buying guide is the order of decisions: the job, the weight you will carry, and the rule that applies to the place you will light it. Stars come last. The six listings here run from £14.49 to £116.99, and none of them is a house log burner. The [wood stove comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-stove) holds the six-row table and the pound prices. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team. Weight, then where you will light it

The cook stoves sit at about 450 g to 1.1 kg before you add wood. The folding REDCAMP spec is 1.06 kg, while the bullets say 868 g. They are still a different class from 6.68 kg and 9.1 kg. The unho is 9.1 kg, with a seven-piece flue and a bag. The 211 cm figure is the chimney assembled, not a packed length. Around 10 kg is a car load. A flue stove belongs only in a stove-jack shelter, and the unho bullets say the jack is a separate buy.

Which rule applies to which job

Smoke-control law and a picnic are different jobs. GOV.UK says outdoor barbecues and burners are allowed, and that a chimney on a building is not a barbecue. A summerhouse counts as a building. In a smoke control area in England, the fuel has to be authorised unless the appliance is exempt, with penalties up to £300 if the chimney smokes and up to £1,000 for the wrong fuel. None of these six is documented here as Defra exempt. Ecodesign labelling for solid-fuel room heaters is a house-flue subject. None of these listings carries an energy label. A fixed home flue in England and Wales is notifiable. These pack stoves are not that install. This guide will not turn 3,000 watts, or 9.3 square metres, into a measured output.

What the stars do not decide

The Ohuhu is 4.7 from 6,151 reviews, and the file still describes soot, flimsy pan arms, and a poor heater to sit around. The unho is 4.1 from 96, with cracked glass in the UK notes. The JAOGAUS is 4.4 from 29, and several of the six UK reviews had not lit it. The round REDCAMP is 4.5 from 2 reviews, at £14.49. The raw page URL is the older ASIN B0856YQ5BR, and the long pasted texts describe a larger hinged stove. They are not this record. Check the live amazon.co.uk page before you buy, and do not average two conflicting weights into one figure.

Common questions

Is a wood stove a house log burner or a camping stove?
In this comparison it is a camping stove. The six amazon.co.uk listings are four light cook stoves and two heavier stoves with a flue. None is shown as a fitted house log burner, and none is documented here as Defra exempt or Ecodesign labelled. If you need a room heater on a building chimney, you are in a different product and a different set of rules.
What should I decide before I look at the stars?
Decide whether you are cooking outdoors or heating a stove-jack shelter. Then check the weight you will actually carry, including a flue if there is one. A 4.7 from thousands of reviews can still be the wrong object for a tent. The stars describe how buyers rated the listing, not which job the steel can do.
How heavy is too heavy to carry?
The cook stoves are listed at about 450 g to 1.1 kg. The tent stoves are 6.68 kg and 9.1 kg, and the unho’s 211 cm line is the assembled chimney. If the walk is the point, the flue stoves are the wrong class. If the car boot is the point, weight matters less than whether the tent has a jack.
Can I use one of these in a smoke control area?
An outdoor barbecue or burner is allowed under the GOV.UK smoke-control page. A chimney on a building, including a summerhouse, is not treated as a barbecue. In a smoke control area the fuel has to be authorised unless the appliance is exempt. None of these six is documented here as exempt, so do not treat a camp-stove listing as permission for a house flue.
Do I need a stove jack before I buy a flue stove?
Yes, if the stove is the unho or the JAOGAUS. The unho bullets say the jack is not in the box, and the JAOGAUS listing does not include one either. An ordinary tent is the wrong room. Keep the pipe off the fabric, and do not read a cook stove with no chimney as a substitute.
