Wood stove for a hot tent: the jack comes first

Updated: October 2026

A wood stove for a hot tent is only a candidate when the canvas is fire-retardant and already has a stove jack. The jack is a reinforced opening that takes the flue through the fabric. It is not in the boxes in this comparison. If your tent is ordinary nylon, the right result of this page is that you do not light any of these stoves inside it. The [wood stove comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-stove) has two flue rows and four cook stoves with no chimney. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, using those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK guidance. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission.

The tent has to be the right kind

GOV.UK says never to use a barbecue in a tent, and to keep cooking appliances away from tent walls. A hot tent is a different shelter: fire-retardant canvas, a jack, and a flue that stays clear of the cloth. Without the jack, you are back in the ordinary-tent rule. The Ohuhu, the Lixada and both REDCAMP cook stoves have no chimney, so they are not this page’s stove. The jack is a separate purchase. The unho bullets include guy ropes, clips and stakes, and they say the stove jack is not included. A specialist kit such as a Winnerwell Nomad, around £330 to £390 on the same date, is a different purchase. A sealed tent with no fresh air is a carbon monoxide problem.

The two flue stoves in this set

Only two listings here are tent stoves with a pipe. The unho is £116.99 and 9.1 kg, with a seven-piece flue, dual glass and a bag. The 211 cm figure is the chimney assembled, not the packed stove. The fuel field says charcoal and the power source says wood. It is 4.1 from 96 reviews, the deeper sample of the pair, and it stays unbadged. The JAOGAUS is £85.99 and 6.68 kg. The spec is 28 × 28 × 35 cm and the title also says 54 × 28 × 35 cm. A bag is not confirmed, the pipe count is not stated, and the ventilation field says vent free while the highlight names chimney pipes. It is 4.4 from 29 reviews, and several UK write-ups had not lit it.

What the reviews actually broke

On the unho, UK reviews praise heat on a cold night. Glass failed more than once: a side window after a second use, front glass on a first use, and a gasket that came away so smoke could escape. One unit arrived with the damper plate missing. The chimney can glow red hot, which is why the jack has to keep fabric off the pipe. Creosote showed up in one UK review after about 30 to 40 burns, at the spark cap, when the flue had stayed cool. One JAOGAUS reviewer said to burn the paint first for about an hour with the tent open. Do that where the fumes can leave.

Where a hot tent is still the wrong plan

In the Cairngorms National Park, from 1 April to 30 September, wood and charcoal stoves are not permitted. Gas, liquid fuel, methylated spirits or solid fuel blocks are the camping fuels that page allows, and the fine runs up to £500. That is one park and a date window, not a nationwide ban. Inside those dates, leave the wood stove at home. A summerhouse is a different mistake. GOV.UK does not treat a chimney on a building as a barbecue, and these listings are not documented as Defra exempt. If smoke spills, you stop. This page does not pick a tent stove.

Common questions

Can I put a wood stove in a normal tent?
No. GOV.UK says not to use a barbecue in a tent, and these cook stoves have no flue to take smoke outside. A flue stove is only a candidate in fire-retardant canvas with a stove jack. Ordinary nylon, an awning or a caravan entrance is the wrong room, even if the flame looks controlled.
What is a stove jack, and is it in the box?
A stove jack is the reinforced opening the flue passes through. The unho listing says it is not included, and the JAOGAUS card does not list one either. Guy ropes on the unho are not a jack. You buy the opening with the tent, or as a separate job, before you light the stove.
Which two listings are the flue stoves, and how heavy are they?
The unho is 9.1 kg at £116.99, with a seven-piece flue. The JAOGAUS is 6.68 kg at £85.99, with a pipe count that is not stated. The other four listings are cook stoves without a chimney, from about 450 g to 1.1 kg. Around 10 kg is a car load, not a rucksack.
Why did glass crack on the unho?
The captured UK notes include a side window after a second use, front glass on a first use, and a gasket that came away on a third use so smoke could escape. That is a repeated complaint in a file of 96 reviews, not a single unlucky photo. Treat cracked glass as a stop. It is why this stove is not badged as the pick.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?
A fixed home flue in England and Wales needs one in the room. A hot tent is not that install, and people still sleep next to the pipe. An alarm is the check that tells you to get out. It does not replace a jack, a clear flue, or the decision to stop when smoke spills.
Can I use this in the Cairngorms in summer?
Not a wood or charcoal stove, from 1 April to 30 September. The park’s byelaw allows gas, liquid fuel, methylated spirits or solid fuel blocks in that window, and the fine is up to £500. The rule is that park, not the whole UK. Outside those dates, other fire rules can still apply.
