Replacement fire bricks for a wood burner

Updated: 22.10.2026

The side brick has crumbled, the back is cracked, or the baffle is sitting at an angle. A rectangle at 230 x 114 x 25 mm will fill some wood burners. It will not become a shaped baffle because the title says most stoves. This page stays with liners for wood burners and multi-fuel boxes, including the Villager stoves named in reviews. The [fire brick comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fire-brick) prices the rectangles, from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. The saw sequence is on [how to replace fire bricks in a wood burner](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fire-brick/sub/fire-brick-how-to-fit). There was no lab test. What you are replacing

A stove liner keeps the flame off the steel and shapes the firebox the manual assumed. The side, the back and the baffle are different pieces. If the throat-plate brick has fallen, or you can see steel, do not use the stove. Copy the brick you removed, including the thickness, the way it was held, and any notch. VITCAS says to match the original material and the way the brick sits. Suitable for most wood-burning stoves on a pack is a size family, not a measurement of your model. A universal 230 mm brick is a fair blank for a plain panel. It is a guess for a branded baffle.

The sizes people cut into stoves

The repeating blank is 230 x 114 x 25 mm. The hongyong ten-pack at £28.00 is ten of those, rated 1100c on the bullets, 4.7 from 439. UK reviews name Villager and Villager A stoves, often using five or eight bricks and keeping spares. That is owner experience, not a fit certificate. The singles are £9.99 at 230 mm, with a size field that says 115 mm, £10.99 at 305 mm, and £14.98 at 193 x 303 mm. One 12 inch order arrived as four 9 inch pieces and one 12 inch piece. The hongyong title says vermiculite and the material field says Ceramic. If the old liner might be clay, vermiculite or fireclay fire bricks is the check.

Baffles and throat plates

A baffle, or throat plate, sits above the fire and sends the gases the right way. On many stoves it is vermiculite with a notch, a slope or a hole for a pin. A spares page for a Broseley Evolution 5 lists separate side, rear and baffle bricks, each with its own millimetres. Nothing in this comparison states those sizes. If the old baffle is a plain rectangle, a board cut to those three measurements can replace it. If it is not a plain rectangle, order the maker's part. The £9.99 Stove Wizard board is a flat 230 mm blank. It does not grow a notch because you need one.

How many to order, and clay only if that is what came out

A stove that took five to eight bricks is why the ten-pack exists. Buying ten when you need the single 193 x 303 mm sheet wastes the other nine. Buying one £9.99 board when the firebox wants six panels leaves you short. Clay belongs in the stove only if clay came out. The six-pack at £25.19 is 9 kg of alumina clay, 230 x 114 x 25 mm, title 1300C, 4.8 from 48. Reviewers have put those bricks in wood stoves and a log burner. The bullets also name pizza ovens. A vermiculite firebox should not be changed to that pack because the star line is higher. The material already in a multi-fuel box still wins.

Using the stove while a brick is cracked

A hairline can wait if the steel is still covered and the baffle is seated. Exposed steel, a crumbled edge, or a dropped baffle means no fire. Pink vermiculite is a retailer sign of over-firing. A new liner does not keep a Defra exemption. England's list is the appliance, the fuel and the manual. A different baffle shape changes that firebox.

Common questions

Will standard 230 x 114 x 25 mm bricks fit my wood burner?
They fit when the panels you removed are plain rectangles of about that size and thickness. The hongyong pack and the £9.99 board are the listings that print it. They do not fit a notched baffle, and they do not fit a stove whose old brick was a different thickness. Measure the old piece. Most stoves on a title is not a measurement of yours.
Are Villager stoves a match for the ten-pack?
Reviewers of the £28.00 hongyong pack report a fit on Villager and Villager A stoves. Some needed no cutting. Some cut the sides. Several used five or eight bricks and kept spares. That is owner experience on that listing. It is not a Villager specification, and it does not cover every Villager model. Check your own bricks before you order ten.
Can I cut one large board into a back and two sides?
You can try when the £14.98 board, titled 193 x 303 x 25 mm, is larger than those three pieces and you allow for saw cuts and a ±2–3 mm tolerance. One reviewer cut that board for a Stockton 7 inset. Sketch the three pieces on the sheet first. If they do not fit with a waste margin, the ten-pack of smaller blanks is the safer order. The how-to page covers the dry cut.
What is a baffle brick, and can a flat board be one?
The baffle sits at the top of the firebox and directs the gases. A flat board can replace it when the old baffle is a plain rectangle of the same thickness. A notched, sloped or pinned baffle is the maker's spare. Broseley listings, as one example, sell that piece separately from the side bricks. The rectangles here do not state those shapes.
How many bricks should I buy?
Count the panels, then add one for a bad cut. Reviewers of the ten-pack often needed five or eight in a Villager-style box. One failed side is a single board if the size matches £9.99, £10.99 or £14.98. Ten is the wrong quantity when you only need the 305 mm length.
