Fire bricks for a wood burner

Updated: 22.10.2026

A search for fire bricks for a wood burner returns three different objects. One is a light vermiculite board. One is a dense fire-clay pack. One is an Inglenook set that shrinks a 16 inch open grate. They share a name on amazon.co.uk and they do different jobs. This guide puts the decision in order: what came out of the appliance, how thick it was, then which shelf price matches that piece. The [fire brick comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fire-brick) holds the seven rows captured on 19 October 2026. The material choice is on [vermiculite or fireclay fire bricks](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fire-brick/sub/fire-brick-vermiculite-vs-fireclay). There was no lab test. Three products that share the name

A stove liner in this set is vermiculite board. The Stove Wizard singles are £9.99, £10.99 and £14.98, and the hongyong pack is ten bricks at £28.00. VITCAS says dense fireclay and vermiculite are separate products: clay stores heat and takes knocks, while vermiculite is light and insulating. If the piece in your hand is pale and easy to lift, you are in the board rows. If it is a heavy red-brown brick, you are in the clay rows. Fireclay here is six bricks at £25.19, title 230 x 114 x 25 mm and 1300C, pack weight 9 kg. Reviewers of that pack also report wood stoves. The third object is the Inglenook 16 inch coal and log saver at £22.99. A stove with side panels and a baffle wants a liner. An open 16 inch grate is the only job that points at that row.

Measure before you trust 230 x 114

Almost every rectangle in this comparison is 25 mm thick. VITCAS lists its own dense fireclay at 32 mm on a 230 x 114 mm brick, so a 25 mm pack sits low if the brick you removed was thicker. Measure the old piece, including the thickness, before you match a title. The £9.99 board says 114 mm in the title and 115 mm in the size field. The £10.99 board is 305 x 115 x 25 mm, and one 12 inch order arrived as four 9 inch pieces and one 12 inch piece. The £14.98 board is titled 193 x 303 x 25 mm, while the dimension field says 30.5 cm across. A notch, a curve or a hole is the stove maker's spare.

What the prices buy

Shelf prices on 19 October 2026 run from £9.99 to £38.99. One board buys a single patch. Six clay bricks are £25.19, about £4.20 each if you use all six. Ten vermiculite bricks are £28.00, about £2.80 each. The Inglenook set is £22.99, one open-fire kit rather than ten panels. Twelve clay bricks at £38.99 are about £3.25 each. Those per-brick figures are arithmetic on the captured shelf prices, not a survey of builders' merchants. The hongyong title says vermiculite while its material field says Ceramic. What a new brick does not change

Ready to Burn, under the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020, concerns small volumes of wood sold in England at 20 percent moisture or below. Stove retailers say wet fuel is how vermiculite crumbles. A new board does not dry a damp log store. None of the temperature lines here is your flue temperature or a smoke-control mark. Approved Document J covers hearths, flues and combustion air. It is not a saw guide for a vermiculite board. Fitting the same material and the same thickness is maintenance. Changing the firebox shape, or moving the stove or the flue, is building work, and a HETAS installer can notify qualifying jobs.

Common questions

What size fire brick does a wood burner take?
There is no single UK size. In this comparison the repeating thickness is 25 mm, and the repeating face is 230 x 114 mm, with longer boards at 305 x 115 mm and 193 x 303 mm. VITCAS sells its own clay brick at 32 mm thick, so a stove built with that brick will not match a 25 mm pack. Measure the piece you removed, including thickness, and treat a notched baffle as a dealer spare.
Should I buy one board or a pack of ten?
Buy one board for one failed panel whose size is close to £9.99, £10.99 or £14.98. Buy the £28.00 ten-pack when the firebox takes several 230 x 114 x 25 mm vermiculite panels. Reviewers of that pack often use five or eight bricks in a Villager stove and keep the rest. A ten-pack is wasted money if you only need the 305 mm board.
What does 1200°C on the title mean?
It is the seller's material claim. Stove Wizard bullets say 1200°C. Hongyong says 1100c. Clay titles say 1300C. None of those figures is the operating temperature of your flue, and none of them is a Defra exemption. The larger Stove Wizard board also prints 1250 degrees on a features line, so that page does not even agree with itself.
Will these bricks make my stove legal in a smoke control area?
No. Defra's England list exempts an appliance with its specified fuel, its manual and any conditions. A brick SKU is not on that list. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own appliance lists. Like-for-like liner replacement is maintenance. A different firebox shape is a modification, and that is a question for the stove manual and, where the flue moves, for a HETAS installer.
What if the board arrives broken?
Photograph it in the packaging before you cut it. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality. Vermiculite is brittle, and reviews in this set include a board broken inside an intact box and bricks broken in transit. A sawn edge makes that conversation harder.
