Best wood burning stove for a room, cooker, or tent

Updated: October 2026

Best on an amazon.co.uk title does not survive the room you actually have. A best wood burning stove in this comparison is the listing that fits one job: a small room, a larger room, a cooker, or a hot tent. The [wood burning stove comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-burning-stove) holds every price and review count. This page says who should keep each type and who should leave it. Peter F., DIY & tools editor, read those listings on 15 October 2026. Nothing was burned in a lab, and there is no UK-wide winner. Best depends on the job

One ranking fails because these appliances are not substitutes. Indoor NRG stoves are freestanding multifuel roomheaters. The Prity 1P34 is a 10 kW wood cooker. unho, Zhildmosin, and TOMOUNT are camping stoves. A tent stove at about £116.99 can be the strongest camping buy here and still be wrong for a terrace house. The only indoor stoves with a double-digit UK review count at the lower price are the two 4.5 kW NRG listings, 4.6 from 30 and 4.0 from 28. The 5 kW and 8 kW stoves have one review or none. Checks that come first sit in the wood burning stove buying guide.

Small-room indoor stoves

For a small room, start with the black NRG 4.5 kW at about £238.99. It is 525 × 380 × 325 mm and 48 kg. Across 30 reviews at 4.6, UK comments often say it throws strong heat for the size. The firebox wants short logs. One review could not get useful heat. The box lists a flue collar, not a flue pipe. DEFRA and Eco Design lines are listing claims, not a match to the exempt list. The black-and-gold NRG is the same size and price, at 4.0 from 28. Paint that looks like rust, and broken glass or a fire brick on arrival, are the heavier complaints.

Larger output and the cooker

Listings around 5.4 kW are about £414.99, with one review or none, a 125 mm collar where a flue is named, and one weight printed as both 57 kg and 67 kg. The pipe is not included. Listings around 8 kW are about £514.99, with one review each. One states 8.1 kW and has no review text. The other states 8.2 kW on wood and prints both 80 kg and 69 kg. An 8 kW stove in a space that needs about 4 kW is the one you run closed down, which makes more smoke. The Prity 1P34 is about £540 and 10 kW, with an oven, rated 4.3 from 6. The written reviews are marked Germany. Buy it only if an installer has accepted 10 kW. The fuel-bed choice is on the wood burning stove vs multifuel page.

Camping, not the house

For a hot tent you drive to, the unho has the most reviews and the lowest price: about £116.99, 4.1 from 96. UK reviewers describe solid heat in a tent or gazebo. Glass that cracks on an early burn is the repeated fault, and one reviewer said the pipe glowed red. The Zhildmosin is about £144.99, at 3.7 from 24 reviews, with no chimney in the box and an oval outlet. The TOMOUNT is about £199.99 and 14 kg, with chimney sections included and only four UK reviews. Three say it is too heavy to hike. None of the three belongs on an indoor shortlist.

What this page will not call best

This page will not name a best wood burning stove for the United Kingdom. There is no lab fire. A 5.0 from one rating is not stronger evidence than 4.6 from 30. It will not call any NRG model exempt. If the house is in a smoke control area, use the smoke control area rules before you treat a DEFRA title as permission to burn logs.

Common questions

Which stove is best for a small room?
The black NRG 4.5 kW, 4.6 from 30 reviews, has the most UK comment at the lower indoor price. Reviewers mention heat for the size and a firebox that wants short logs. The black-and-gold stove at the same price is 4.0 from 28, with more paint and damage complaints. An installer still sizes the room. A DEFRA line on the title is not an exemption.
Is the £238.99 stove better than the £514.99 stove?
It is the better-evidenced buy for a small room, not a stronger heater. It states 4.5 kW and has 30 reviews. The stoves at about £514.99 state about 8 kW and have one review each. Shutting a large stove down in a small room makes more smoke. If an installer has asked for about 8 kW, skip the cheaper stove.
What is the best tent stove in this set?
The unho at about £116.99 has 96 reviews, the most here. UK comments praise the heat in a tent or gazebo, and they also repeat cracked glass and one pipe that glowed red. The TOMOUNT weighs 14 kg and has four reviews, with the chimney included. The Zhildmosin needs a chimney you buy yourself. None of them is a house stove.
Is the cooker the best if I want an oven?
It is the only oven here, which is not the same as the best stove. The Prity 1P34 is a 10 kW wood cooker at about £540, rated 4.3 from 6, and the written reviews are from Germany. One says the oven is decorative if you want 200 °C, because the room exceeds 30 °C. Choose it when an installer accepts 10 kW.
Can you name a UK-wide best stove?
No. These notes cover the amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison, not every stove on sale in Britain. A Victoria 8.3 kW listing showed £699.99 outside this comparison and is only a price marker. Best here means best for a stated job inside these listings, with the review gaps left visible.
Why are there two 4.5 kW NRG listings at the same price?
They are different ASINs at the same stated size and the same price of about £238.99. The black one is 4.6 from 30 reviews. The black-and-gold one is 4.0 from 28, with paint wear and arrival damage in the UK comments. The fuel line on the gold listing says wood while the title says multifuel. Read them as two products that share a headline.
