Wood burning stove comparison 2026

The best wood burning stoves, compared.

Top pick: TOMOUNT tent stove 38 cm Best value: unho hot tent stove – About £116.99 with 4.1 from 96 reviews, the largest review count here, for a stove-jack tent. Updated October 2026.

Peter F.
Peter F.Editor

A wood burning stove is a closed appliance that heats a room with logs. The same UK search also returns multifuel stoves and portable tent stoves. A house needs a fixed stove and a flue an installer will sign off. A hot tent needs a portable stove and a stove jack. If you live in a smoke control area, wood is lawful only in an exempt appliance on the named fuel. Wider fixed log burners sit in the [wood stove comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-stove). Wood-only stoves burn logs on a bed of ash. Multifuel stoves add a grate so they can burn smokeless mineral fuel as well as wood.

The best wood burning stoves in detail

TOMOUNT tent stove 38 cm

Rank 1

TOMOUNT tent stove 38 cm

∼£200

Our view

The TOMOUNT tent stove folds to about 38 × 20 × 28 cm, weighs 14 kg, and is listed at £199.99 in 304 stainless steel. All four UK reviews praise the thickness of the steel, the side shelves for a kettle or a pan, and the side window. One of them also mentions straightforward assembly and a long flue. The listing says seven chimney sections, about 205 cm in total, plus gloves, an ash rake, a grate, and a storage bag. Three of those reviews say 14 kg is too much to hike with, so this is a stove you drive to a pitch. One reviewer would still pay more for a lighter stove for their own camping. No cracked glass is described in these four reviews, but four reviews is a thin sample next to the unho listing, which has 96. It is not a Building Regulations roomheater.

Pros

  • 304 stainless body, with listed thicknesses of 2.5 mm on the top and 2 mm on the sides
  • Chimney sections, gloves, an ash rake, a grate, shelves, and a storage bag are on the listing
  • All four UK reviews praise the build and the side window
  • Side shelves give a place for a kettle or a pan

Cons

  • 14 kg, which the UK reviews treat as too heavy to hike
  • Only four reviews, all at 5.0, so the sample is small
  • £199.99, above the other tent stoves in this set
  • Not a house flue and not a checked smoke-control exemption

Best for: Drive-in hot-tent camping where you want a heavier stainless stove with the chimney in the box.

Less suitable: Backpacking, and any indoor room that needs a fixed stove and a legal install.

Common questions

Is the chimney included?

The listing says seven stainless chimney sections, stated total about 205 cm, which can be shortened by using fewer sections.

How heavy is it?

The specification line says 14 kg. UK reviews treat that as too heavy to hike with.

NRG 8 kW fireplace stove

Rank 2

NRG 8 kW fireplace stove

∼£515

Our view

This NRG fireplace stove is listed at £514.99, with a bullet output of 8.2 kW on wood and 8 kW on smokeless fuel. The body is 490 × 335 × 585 mm, the glass is given as 306 × 369 mm, and the collar is 125 mm for a top or rear outlet. The specification line says 80 kg and a bullet says 69 kg. Neither figure was reweighed. The box lists a heat-resistant glove, an ashpan, a flue collar, and a manual, and the bullet says the flue pipe is not included. The only UK review, inside a 5.0 from one rating, calls it a fantastic product, great value, and well packed, and it states no complaint. One review cannot show how the stove behaves after a season, or whether about 8 kW is too much for the room. The DEFRA line for wood in smoke control zones is a listing claim.

Pros

  • Stated output of 8.2 kW on wood and 8 kW on smokeless fuel
  • Top or rear 125 mm outlet, with the collar included
  • Glass size printed as 306 × 369 mm
  • A glove, an ashpan, a collar, and a manual are named in the box

Cons

  • £514.99 with only one short positive review
  • Weight printed as both 80 kg and 69 kg
  • The flue pipe is not included
  • Easy to oversize a small room, and the DEFRA wording is unverified

Best for: A larger room where an installer has already asked for about 8 kW and you can accept a single review.

Less suitable: A small room, or a buyer who wants more than one UK review before spending £514.99.

NRG 8 kW multifuel stove

Rank 3

NRG 8 kW multifuel stove

∼£515

Our view

This NRG multifuel stove is listed at £514.99, with 8.1 kW on the specification line and 8 kW in the title. The stated size is 490 × 335 × 585 mm and the specification weight is 80 kg, in cast iron and steel, with glass given as 306 × 369 mm. The bullet says the flue pipe is not included. The amazon.co.uk line is 5.0 from one review, and there is no review text, so there is no UK comment on heat, glass, or delivery. A single star without words does not show whether 8.1 kW suits the room or whether the stove arrived intact. The listing says DEFRA approved. That was not matched to the exempt list. Ecodesign is not stated on this listing.

Pros

  • Specification line states 8.1 kW
  • Viewing glass given as 306 × 369 mm
  • 80 kg cast-iron and steel body at 490 × 335 × 585 mm
  • Sits at the high output end of this set if an installer wants about 8 kW

Cons

  • Only one rating, and no review text
  • The flue pipe is not included
  • £514.99 with almost no buyer comment to set against the price
  • The DEFRA line is a claim only

Best for: A larger room if you are buying on the printed 8.1 kW and you will not rely on reviews.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants UK review text, a flue pipe in the box, or a small-room stove.

NRG 5 kW multifuel stove

Rank 4

NRG 5 kW multifuel stove

∼£415

Our view

This NRG multifuel stove is listed at £414.99, with 5.4 kW on the specification line and 5 kW in the title. The stated size is 430 × 310 × 560 mm and the weight line is 67 kg, in cast iron and steel, finished black. The amazon.co.uk line is 5.0 from one review, and there is no review text. Heat, glass, and delivery are not described by a buyer here. The flue-pipe field is empty, so this listing does not say whether a pipe is in the box. The listing says DEFRA approved, and Ecodesign is not stated. A stated 5.4 kW can still be too much for a small room if you then run the stove with the air closed down.

Pros

  • Specification output of 5.4 kW, between the 4.5 kW and 8 kW NRG listings
  • 67 kg black body, stated at 430 × 310 × 560 mm
  • £414.99, below the 8 kW listings in this set
  • A mid-output option if an installer wants more than 4.5 kW

Cons

  • One rating and no review text
  • The flue pipe is not stated
  • Ecodesign is not stated, and DEFRA is only a listing claim
  • £414.99 buys much less buyer evidence than the £238.99 stove with 30 reviews

Best for: A room an installer has sized near 5 kW, if you can accept a listing with no written reviews.

Less suitable: A buyer who wants review text, a confirmed flue pipe, or the £238.99 stove with 30 reviews.

NRG 4.5 kW multifuel stove

Rank 5

NRG 4.5 kW multifuel stove

∼£239

Our view

The NRG 4.5 kW cast-iron multifuel stove measures 525 × 380 × 325 mm, weighs 48 kg, and is listed at £238.99. Across 30 amazon.co.uk reviews at 4.6, the UK comments often say it throws strong heat for that size and fits a tight space. Several of those reviews also call the price good value. The firebox is smaller than some buyers expected, so the logs have to be short. One reviewer could not get useful heat from it despite using the vents and logs, and another asked where to find a replacement fire brick. The included-components line lists a flue collar, not a flue pipe. The listing says DEFRA approved and Eco Design 2022, and that wording was not matched to the exempt list here.

Pros

  • 4.5 kW stated output in a 48 kg cast-iron body
  • 4.6 from 30 amazon.co.uk reviews, the largest indoor review set here
  • UK reviews often report strong heat in a small space
  • Listed at £238.99, and several reviewers describe that price as good value
  • A flue collar is named in the included components

Cons

  • Firebox suits short logs; some buyers found it tighter than expected
  • One review reported no useful heat
  • The flue pipe is not on the included-components line
  • DEFRA and Ecodesign lines are listing claims, not a match to the exempt list

Best for: A small room where you want a 4.5 kW multifuel stove and can cut the logs short.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs long logs, a flue pipe in the box, or a model already confirmed on the exempt list.

Prity 1P34 wood cooker

Rank 6

Prity 1P34 wood cooker

∼£540

Our view

The Prity 1P34, sold under the OtoSystem brand line, is a 10 kW wood-burning cooker with a cast-iron plate and an oven. It measures 45 × 75 × 80 cm, weighs 76 kg, and is listed at £540.00. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.3 from 6 reviews. The two written reviews are marked as written in Germany, so they are not UK opinion. One of those reviews says the stove is practical and easy to clean. The other says the oven is decorative if you are chasing 200 °C, because the room then goes above 30 °C. That is one non-UK comment, not a measurement made here. The listing does not state a DEFRA or Ecodesign claim, it does not say a flue pipe is included, and the line about heating up to 514 sq ft is the seller's coverage claim, which was not checked.

Pros

  • 10 kW wood cooker with an oven and a cast-iron plate on the listing
  • 76 kg freestanding body, 45 × 75 × 80 cm
  • Listing efficiency grade A, with no percentage printed
  • Manufacturer line is Prity LTD, country of origin Bulgaria

Cons

  • The written reviews are from Germany, not the United Kingdom
  • Only six ratings, so the 4.3 is a small sample
  • The oven-versus-room comment is one non-UK review, not a test
  • No DEFRA line, and the flue pipe is not stated as included

Best for: A household that wants a wood cooker with an oven and will have the 10 kW output sized by an installer.

Less suitable: A small room, a smoke-control address that needs a checked exemption, or anyone treating the German reviews as UK evidence.

unho hot tent stove

Rank 7

unho hot tent stove

∼£117

Our view

The unho hot-tent stove weighs 9.1 kg and is listed at £116.99, with a 7-piece chimney in the listing highlight. Across 96 amazon.co.uk reviews at 4.1, UK reviewers describe solid heat for the money in a tent or a gazebo, and some cook on it as well as heat the shelter. Several say it packs smaller than it looks and that smoke leakage was limited once it was set up. The same review set keeps returning to glass that cracks on an early burn. Missing gloves, an Allen key, a damper plate, or a peg show up as well, and some buyers add an extra flue section or a tent jack. One reviewer said the pipe glowed red, which is a clearance problem. The listing says to use a stove-jack tent with ventilation, so this is not a living-room flue.

Pros

  • £116.99, the lowest shelf price in this set
  • 4.1 from 96 reviews, the largest review count here
  • UK reviews report usable heat in a tent or gazebo, and some cooking
  • The listing highlight includes a 7-piece chimney, foldable racks, and a carry bag

Cons

  • Glass cracking on early burns is a repeated UK complaint
  • Gloves, an Allen key, a damper, or a peg were missing for some buyers
  • One review described the pipe glowing red
  • Not a house stove; it needs a stove jack and ventilation

Best for: Drive-in camping in a stove-jack tent, if you accept a glass risk at this price.

Less suitable: A house, a closed room, or anyone who needs the glass to survive the first burns without a spare.

NRG 4.5 kW black and gold

Rank 8

NRG 4.5 kW black and gold

∼£239

Our view

This black-and-gold NRG is listed at the same £238.99 as the black 4.5 kW stove, with the same stated size of 525 × 380 × 325 mm and the same 48 kg weight. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.0 from 28 reviews. UK reviewers who got it going say it warms a small room and looks sturdy, and one says the seller responded after a damaged delivery. Paint that looks like rust is a repeated complaint, and the firebox again wants small logs. Broken glass and a broken fire brick on arrival appear in the review text, as does a second delivery that arrived incomplete after the first never came. Air controls and the ash door are described as poor, and heat is slow to build. The fuel-type line says wood while the title says multifuel, and the DEFRA wording is still only a listing claim.

Pros

  • Same £238.99 and 4.5 kW title as the black NRG, in a black-and-gold finish
  • 28 amazon.co.uk reviews, so the sample is not a single rating
  • Some UK reviews say it warms a small room once it is going
  • One reviewer reports the seller responded after damage

Cons

  • Paint wear that looks like rust
  • Broken glass and a broken fire brick on arrival in the review text
  • Small firebox, slow heat, and awkward air controls
  • The bullets do not confirm that a flue pipe is included

Best for: A small room where the black-and-gold finish matters and you can inspect the stove on delivery.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants the 4.6-star black listing at the same price, or who cannot live with paint wear and a tight firebox.

Paint that looks like rust, a small firebox, broken glass and firebrick on arrival, an incomplete second delivery, and awkward air controls.

Zhildmosin 23 cm tent stove

Rank 9

Zhildmosin 23 cm tent stove

∼£145

Our view

The Zhildmosin is a cast-iron tent stove, 23 × 23 × 33 cm and 10.9 kg, listed at £144.99. UK reviews, on a 3.7 rating from 24, say it puts out strong heat for that size and can boil a kettle once a chimney is fitted. The listing does not include the chimney and says it suits a 10 cm pipe. Reviewers say the outlet is oval, so a round pipe is a poor fit, and chimneys are hard to source. One UK review describes the body as two loose halves without a seal between them. Chinese characters cast into the metal were not in the advert, according to those reviews. A specification line says vent free, which conflicts with the need for a chimney. Do not treat it as a house stove.

Pros

  • Small cast-iron body, 23 × 23 × 33 cm and 10.9 kg
  • UK reviews report strong heat and a kettle boil once a flue is fitted
  • 24 amazon.co.uk reviews, so the complaints are not from one buyer
  • The door has tempered glass on the listing

Cons

  • The chimney is not included
  • An oval flue outlet makes a round 10 cm pipe a poor fit
  • One review describes two loose body halves without a seal
  • 3.7 from 24, the lowest star line in this set

Best for: A small shelter where you already have a pipe that actually fits the oval outlet.

Less suitable: Anyone who expected a round flue and a chimney in the box, or a fixed indoor stove.

NRG 5 kW fireplace stove

Rank 10

NRG 5 kW fireplace stove

∼£415

Our view

This NRG is listed at £414.99 as a 5 kW fireplace stove, with a bullet of 5.4 kW on wood and 5.2 kW on smokeless fuel. The body is 430 × 310 × 560 mm, the glass is given as 281 × 309 mm, and the outlet is top or rear at 125 mm. The bullet says 57 kg and the specification line says 67 kg. The box names a heat-resistant glove, the stove, an ashpan, a flue collar, and a manual, and it says the flue pipe is not included. There is no customer-review line on the listing, so stars, heat, and faults are unknown. The bullet says DEFRA approved for wood in smoke control zones and lists ECO Design among the special features. Both are claims, not a match to the exempt list. You are buying the printed specification.

Pros

  • Printed outputs of 5.4 kW on wood and 5.2 kW on smokeless fuel
  • 125 mm top or rear collar, with a glove, an ashpan, and a manual named
  • Glass size printed as 281 × 309 mm
  • A three-stage air intake is on the bullet

Cons

  • No customer-review line on the listing
  • Weight printed as both 57 kg and 67 kg
  • The flue pipe is not included
  • DEFRA and Ecodesign lines are unverified claims

Best for: A mid-size room where the installer wants about 5 kW and you are content with the printed specification.

Less suitable: Anyone who wants amazon.co.uk reviews, one settled weight, or a flue pipe in the box.

How we compared

We did not burn, weigh, or emissions-test these appliances. Each score is a 0–100 editorial figure from the amazon.co.uk listing in this set, read on 15 October 2026. Stars, review volume, UK review themes, the printed specification, and shelf price are weighted to 100. A DEFRA or Ecodesign line adds no points, because it was not matched to the exempt list.

1

Stars

20%

The printed amazon.co.uk rating, with a cap when the listing has no review text or only one to four ratings.

2

Review volume

20%

The printed review count. One review scores far below a listing with 96 reviews.

3

UK review themes

25%

Themes in the UK review text. Repeated breakage, a missing chimney, or no written review lowers this block. Reviews marked Germany are not treated as UK opinion.

4

Specification

15%

Stated output, weight, flue, and what the box lists. Contradictory weights, or a chimney the stove needs that is not in the box, lower this block.

Wood burning stove buying guide

The same search covers three jobs: a fixed stove for a room, a wood cooker with an oven, and a portable stove for a hot tent. Price in this set runs from about £116.99 to £540. A listing badge is not a smoke-control exemption, and a flue pipe is often not in the box.

What is a wood burning stove?

A wood-burning stove is a closed appliance that heats a room by burning logs. On amazon.co.uk the same search also returns multifuel stoves, wood-burning cookers, and portable tent stoves. Wood-only stoves burn logs on a bed of ash. Multifuel stoves add a grate so they can burn smokeless mineral fuel as well as wood. Cookers add an oven. The cooker kept in this set is the Prity 1P34, listed at 10 kW and about £540.

Best for

  • A household adding a stove to an existing chimney, with the output sized and the install notified
  • Drive-in camping in a stove-jack tent, with ventilation, not as a house heater

Not ideal for

  • A smoke-control address unless the exact model is on that country's exempt list
  • A small room if the only figure you have is 8 kW or 10 kW and you plan to shut the air down

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Trusting a title badge

DEFRA approved on an amazon.co.uk title is a claim. None of the NRG lines here was matched to the Defra exempt list. Ask the council, then search the exact model on the list for your country.

    Treating Ecodesign as an exemption

Ecodesign is a sale standard from 1 January 2022, including at least 65 percent seasonal efficiency for a closed non-pellet stove. It does not authorise wood in a smoke control area.

  3. 3

Assuming the flue pipe is in the box

Several NRG listings include a 125 mm collar and say the pipe is not included. A tent stove is a different job: unho and TOMOUNT list chimney sections, and the Zhildmosin does not.

What to weigh up

Job, smoke control, and output

High

The first split is the job. A house needs a fixed stove and a flue an installer will sign off. A hot tent needs a portable stove and a stove jack. The indoor NRG models, the Prity cooker, and the three tent stoves are not substitutes. In a smoke control area, ask the council before you buy. Wood is lawful there only in an exempt appliance, on the fuel that exemption names. Ecodesign is not that list.

Fuel bed, flue, and the install

High

Wood-only stoves burn logs on a flat bed of ash. Multifuel stoves add a grate for smokeless mineral fuel. Do not put that mineral fuel on a wood-only stove, and do not mix fuels in one fire. The NRG titles say multifuel. The Prity 1P34 and the three tent stoves are wood-burning. On the black-and-gold NRG the title says multifuel and a fuel-type line says wood, so confirm the firebed before you order fuel. The flue is separate from the stove.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Small room, existing chimney

You want a fixed stove an installer can size, and you can cut logs short. The NRG 4.5 kW is 48 kg cast iron at about £238.99, with 4.6 from 30 reviews. The box lists a flue collar, not a flue pipe, and the DEFRA line is a listing claim.

Smoke control area

You may burn logs only in an exempt appliance, on the fuel that exemption names. None of these listings was matched to the Defra list. If an installer has confirmed the exact model is on the list for your country, the NRG 4.5 kW is the indoor stove with the most UK reviews here. If it is not on the list, do not buy it for that address.

Drive-in hot tent

You drive to a pitch and want a portable stove with a chimney in the listing, used in a stove-jack tent with ventilation. The unho weighs 9.1 kg and is about £116.99, with 4.1 from 96 reviews. It is not a house heater.

Common questions about wood burning stoves

Which wood burning stove is the top pick in this set?
The top pick is the NRG 4.5 kW cast-iron multifuel stove, about £238.99, with 4.6 from 30 amazon.co.uk reviews. UK comments often report strong heat in a small room when the logs are cut short. The box lists a flue collar, not a flue pipe. The listing says DEFRA approved, and that line was not matched to the exempt list. The score is an editorial figure from the listing, not a lab test.
How much does a wood burning stove cost on amazon.co.uk?
In this set, tent stoves are about £116.99 (unho, 4.1 from 96 reviews), £144.99 (Zhildmosin, 3.7 from 24), and £199.99 (TOMOUNT, 5.0 from 4). The two indoor 4.5 kW NRG stoves are about £238.99. Listings around 5.4 kW are about £414.99, and listings around 8 kW are about £514.99, both with almost no written reviews. The Prity 10 kW cooker is about £540. These are shelf prices on 15 October 2026, not a market average.
What should you check before you buy a wood burning stove?
A house needs a fixed stove and a legal flue. A hot tent needs a portable stove and a stove jack. Ask the council about smoke control: wood is lawful there only in an exempt appliance, on the named fuel. Ask an installer to size the kilowatts, because shutting a too-large stove down makes more smoke. Check the box for a flue pipe. Where NRG states a diameter, it is a 125 mm collar and the pipe is not included.
Can you burn wood in a smoke control area?
In a smoke control area you must not allow smoke from the chimney. Wood is lawful only in a Defra-exempt appliance, on the fuel that exemption names. GOV.UK sets a penalty of up to £300 for smoke in England, and up to £1,000 for buying unauthorised fuel for an appliance that is not approved. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland keep their own lists. The detail is in smoke control areas for log burners. A listing badge is not that list.
Is Ecodesign the same as a Defra exemption?
No. Ecodesign, Regulation (EU) 2015/1185, is a sale standard from 1 January 2022. HETAS describes at least 65 percent efficiency for a non-pellet stove, plus limits on particulates, organic gases, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. An exemption is a named model on the Defra list, and it names the fuel. A stove can meet the sale standard and still be unlawful on wood if it is not on that list. None of the DEFRA lines here were checked against it.
Does a wood burning stove include the flue pipe?
Often no. On the NRG 4.5 kW top pick the included line lists a flue collar, not a flue pipe. The 8.2 kW and 5.4 kW listings that state a diameter use a 125 mm collar, and the pipe is not included. unho and TOMOUNT list chimney sections. The Zhildmosin listing does not, and UK reviews say the outlet is oval, so a round 10 cm pipe is a poor fit. An installer matches a house stove to the chimney.
Can a tent stove heat a living room?
No. The unho listing is a hot-tent stove and says to use a stove-jack tent with ventilation. TOMOUNT and Zhildmosin are camping stoves. UK reviews of the unho describe heat in a tent or a gazebo, and they also describe glass that cracks on an early burn. One review said the pipe glowed red, which is a clearance problem. Do not run a tent stove in a closed room, and do not treat it as a Building Regulations roomheater.

Our verdict

The top pick is unho hot tent stove, with the highest score in this comparison (8 out of 10, from 96 amazon.co.uk reviews). The best value is the unho hot tent stove at about £116.99, with 4.1 from 96 reviews and a 7-piece chimney on the listing. Glass that cracks on an early burn is a repeated UK complaint, and it is not a living-room flue.
