Wood burning stove vs multifuel: the firebed choice

Updated: October 2026

The amazon.co.uk titles barely separate a wood burner from a multifuel stove. The wood burning stove vs multifuel decision turns on the firebed. A wood-only stove uses a flat bed for logs and wood briquettes. A multifuel stove adds a raised grate and an ashpan for manufactured smokeless fuel. On the [wood burning stove comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-burning-stove), the indoor NRG listings are titled multifuel, and the Prity cooker and three tent stoves are wood appliances. Peter F. checked the listings against HETAS and GOV.UK guidance for England. There was no lab burn. Sizing is in the [wood burning stove buying guide](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-burning-stove/sub/wood-burning-stove-buying-guide). Two firebeds

A wood-only stove holds the fire on a flat bed of ash. Air comes in around that bed, which is why a thin ash layer helps the next logs catch. A multifuel stove lifts the fire on a grate so air can also rise from underneath, with an ashpan below. HETAS describes that split as logs on a flat bed, and a raised grate with under-air when the stove is also meant for manufactured solid fuel. If the listing never prints raised grate, trust the fuel line rather than a photograph. Indoor NRG listings say multifuel and, where a bullet names a fuel, wood and smokeless fuel. That is enough to treat them as multifuel stoves. It does not prove a grate is pictured on every page. Wood can go on the grate, but the extra under-air makes logs burn more briskly. Smokeless mineral briquettes on a flat bed are the pairing HETAS warns against.

What you can put in each

On a wood-only stove the fuel is logs and wood briquettes. Manufactured smokeless mineral fuel stays off that flat bed. On a multifuel stove you may burn wood or manufactured smokeless fuel, in separate fires. Logs plus smokeless ovals in the same load blacken the glass and soot the flue faster, because the fuels want different air. A clean start is in the guide to lighting a wood-burning stove. Finish the log fire, let the bed clear, and light the briquettes as their own fire. Ready to Burn logs on their own point you to a wood-only stove. An empty log store in January then leaves no second fuel that stove can burn.

What you cannot buy for a home in England

In England it is illegal to sell traditional house coal for use in the home. GOV.UK says that coal may not be sold for domestic use, and that manufactured solid fuels need certification. A multifuel grate does not turn house coal into a lawful retail fuel. Certified smokeless fuel is a different product. Wood sold in England under 2 m³ has to carry the Ready to Burn mark, at 20 percent moisture or less. A wet boot-load can fall under that volume and still lay tar in the flue. Outside England, check your own nation’s sales rule before you order.

How that lands on this comparison

The indoor NRG stoves are sold as multifuel. Where a bullet names a fuel, it names wood and smokeless fuel. The listings do not all photograph a raised grate. Read the fuel sentence on the page you open, and burn one fuel at a time. The Prity cooker and the three tent stoves are wood appliances for cooking or camping, not a living-room grate. If a fixed stove is not exempt, wood is out in a smoke control area. That check is on the wood burning stove smoke-control page. Choose wood-only when logs and wood briquettes are the only fuel you will buy. Choose multifuel when you also want manufactured smokeless fuel as its own fire. House coal stays unlawful to buy for a home in England.

Common questions

What is the difference between a wood burner and a multifuel stove?
A wood-only stove has a flat bed for logs and wood briquettes. A multifuel stove adds a raised grate and an ashpan so it can burn wood or manufactured smokeless fuel. HETAS treats the air coming up through the grate as the reason mineral fuel belongs there. Wood can go on the grate. Mineral smokeless fuel stays off the flat bed.
Can I burn logs on a multifuel stove?
Yes. HETAS says you can burn wood on a multifuel stove. The logs sit on the grate, so more air reaches them from below than on a flat ash bed. Burn the logs alone and save smokeless briquettes for another fire. A flat-bed stove suits a log-only household, and it cannot take mineral fuel later.
Can I burn smokeless fuel on a wood-only stove?
No. Manufactured smokeless mineral fuel needs the grate and under-air of a multifuel stove. HETAS advises against putting it on a wood-only flat bed. Wood briquettes are wood, so they belong with the logs. A bag marked smokeless is the mineral product. Choose the grate before you buy that bag.
Can I burn house coal in a home in England?
In England, traditional house coal may not be sold for use in the home. GOV.UK states that as a sales rule, and a multifuel grate does not create an exception. Certified manufactured smokeless fuel is a different product. Outside England, check the sales rule for your own nation before you order.
Should I buy a multifuel stove just in case?
Choose a multifuel stove if you may really burn manufactured smokeless fuel. If you will only keep Ready to Burn logs, a wood-only stove matches that store. Multifuel still means one fuel per fire, and house coal stays off the England shopping list. The indoor NRG stoves here are sold as multifuel. The Prity cooker and the tent stoves remain wood appliances.
Do the NRG stoves in this set have a grate?
The indoor NRG listings are titled multifuel, and bullets that name a fuel say wood and smokeless fuel. That is the basis for treating them as multifuel stoves. It does not show that every listing photographs a raised grate. Read the fuel line on the amazon.co.uk page, and use one fuel at a time.
