How to light a wood burning stove without black glass

Updated: October 2026

The glass is black, and the instinct is to shut the vents so the logs last until morning. That habit keeps the stove dirty. This page is how to light a wood burning stove that is already installed, using dry wood and the air the fire needs. If it is not in yet, start with the [buying guide](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-burning-stove/sub/wood-burning-stove-buying-guide). The notes follow HETAS and Defra’s burn-better guidance, plus faults in the [wood burning stove comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/wood-burning-stove). We did not light these stoves. Follow the manual where it differs. Peter F. updated this on 15 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the match

Burn wood at 20 percent moisture or less. In England, bags under 2 cubic metres should be Ready to Burn. Split a log and check the face. Wet wood is what HETAS mentions first when the glass blacks over. The flue has to be clear, and the air controls start at the lighting position in the manual. Primary air feeds the bed. The airwash runs down the glass. A carbon monoxide alarm to BS EN 50291 belongs in the same room, about 1–3 metres away. The flat bed or grate choice is on the wood burning stove vs multifuel page.

Lighting from the top

Follow the manufacturer’s lighting instructions first. Where the manual allows it, HETAS describes a top-down stack: small logs on the bed, kindling above them, firelighters in the kindling, the lighting air on, and the door closed. Opening the door to hurry the fire spills smoke and cools the glass. If the manual specifies a bottom-lit pile, use that instead. Once the top of the stove is warm, move towards the running setting. You want bright flames, not a dull mass with the vents shut. Refuel onto hot embers and do not let wood touch the glass. Short logs matter on the NRG 4.5 kW fireboxes, which UK reviewers found tighter than the outside size suggests.

When the glass goes black

Black glass usually means the fire never got hot enough, the wood was wet, or the airwash was closed. HETAS ties sooty glass to moisture above 20 percent. Drier logs and the airwash open, once the fire is established, are the fix. Wiping a cold pane does not change the next fire. Slumbering, starving the stove overnight, is what HETAS and Defra’s burn-better notes advise against. If the room is warm, use a smaller load. A cracked pane is different. Several unho reviews describe glass cracking on an early burn. Stop until that glass is safe to fire.

Sweeping and when to stop

HETAS encourages at least two sweeps a year on a wood flue, and one on smokeless fuel. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps talks about a quarterly sweep for wood while the stove is in use. Both are guidance, not one legal interval. If smoke enters the room or the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, put the fire out, ventilate, and do not sleep there until a competent person has checked the stove and the flue. A DEFRA title is not the exempt list. That check is the smoke control area rules.

Tent stoves are a shorter version of the same risks

Do the first burn outside the tent. unho reviews include cracked glass, a missing damper, and a pipe one person saw glowing red. A red pipe means more clearance. Use a stove jack. A chimney on fabric is how tents melt. The Zhildmosin outlet is oval, and the chimney is not in the box. TOMOUNT reviews treat 14 kg as a drive-in stove. If smoke fills the shelter, put the fire out and do not sleep there.

Common questions

How do I light a wood-burning stove?
Use dry wood, at 20 percent moisture or less, and follow the manual’s air settings. Where a top-down start is allowed, HETAS describes small logs on the bed, kindling and firelighters above, the lighting air on, and the door closed. Adjust the air once the stove top is warm. Opening the door to hurry the fire spills smoke and cools the glass.
What is the top-down method?
It stacks the fire so the kindling burns above the logs and warms the flue first. Small logs sit on the bed, kindling sits on them, and firelighters go in the kindling. You light that top layer and close the door. Some manuals specify a different stack. Theirs wins. The method does not fix wet wood or a blocked chimney.
Why is the glass black?
HETAS points first to wood above 20 percent moisture, a closed airwash, and a fire that never got hot enough. Soot from that fire can be wiped off the cold glass. The next fire stays dirty unless the fuel and the air change. A cracked pane, which shows up in several unho reviews, is damage. Stop until it is safe.
Can I shut the vents to make the wood last?
Starving the stove so it ticks over is slumbering. HETAS and Defra’s burn-better notes both advise against it. The wood lasts longer and leaves more smoke and more deposits in the chimney. If the room is warm, use a smaller load. If the stove is too big, choking it is not a way to size it.
How often should the chimney be swept?
HETAS encourages at least two sweeps a year on a wood flue, and at least one on smokeless fuel. The National Association of Chimney Sweeps suggests quarterly sweeps for wood while the stove is in use. Those are two pieces of guidance, not one legal frequency. Tar, a nest, or smoke in the room means you stop and call a sweep.
What do I do if smoke comes into the room?
Put the fire out safely, ventilate, and do not sleep in that room. Smoke at the door or a carbon monoxide alarm means a competent person should check the appliance and the flue before you light it again. Do not keep the evening going with the windows cracked and the alarm chirping.
