A 4 piece or 5 piece fireplace set is not a reliable contents list until you read the tool names. In this batch, the sets sold as four-piece omit tongs. On other UK shop sites, four-piece often means four tools including tongs, plus a stand. A poker rakes and separates fuel. Tongs lift a log or a piece of coal that has to move as a piece. Blue Oak treats tongs as optional and still recommends them for open fires and deep stoves. Stoves4life's usual companion set is a poker, a brush, a shovel, tongs and a stand. If you load logs by hand, a four-piece listing in this table is the one without tongs. How these Amazon listings count

In this batch the listings that do not name tongs are VOUNOT B09Y116T13, the Fire Vida Aston specification on B014WAUSGO, Kingson F521 B0DDHCF9SG, and the concealed Valiant B0922WMNRY. VOUNOT is a brush, a poker, a shovel and a stand. The Aston specification names the same three tools on a stand, though that listing's title, bullets and blurb do not all describe one product, so you still check the live photographs. F521 is about 47 cm, sold without tongs. The concealed Valiant is a shovel, a brush and a poker in a cylinder, with no tongs named. Listings that do name tongs include Fire Vida black B00QSZNRJW, Fire Vida Buxton B01DA8N7FI, Valiant FIR276 B0CHMWFJC3, Kingson K409B B0DDH8FH5J, the JVL Lambeth bullets on B078XY5C7W, and the HomeZone components line on B07H7L2Q8V. Lambeth is the contradiction to read twice. The bullets list tongs, and the item type says four pieces. HomeZone's components line lists five tools, and the pieces field says 1. JVL Belvoir is sold as a five-piece classic set, and the bullets do not name tongs. If you need tongs, Lambeth's bullets are the line that counts, and Belvoir's title is not.

How other UK shops count

JVL's own Jennings page sells a 4 piece companion set plus a stand: poker, brush, shovel and tongs, then the stand, at about 53 cm and £31.99 on that page. Damart's Cotswold set uses the same pattern, four tools including tongs, plus a stand. Neither product is an ASIN in this comparison. If you carry Jennings' meaning of 4 onto VOUNOT, you will expect tongs the listing does not name. Manor's trade guide says hearth tidy sets have two useful tools, and companion sets have three or four. Barnitts lists a Manor trio as brush, shovel, poker and stand, so three there is three tools, and the stand is extra. On these amazon.co.uk titles, a five-piece title that names tongs is four tools plus a stand, and a four-piece title that omits tongs is three tools plus a stand.

The rule before you add to basket

Read the nouns, and ignore the numeral until the names agree. If you lift logs or coal, choose a row that names tongs. If you only rake and shovel, a four-piece row without tongs can be the right spend. In this batch the cheaper four-piece set is the one missing tongs. It is not automatically shorter. Length and the stand belong on the fireplace companion set buying guide. Do not treat Belvoir's five-piece wording as tongs when the bullets never list them. When the Aston file describes different objects, leave the numeral out of the decision.

You get the three hearth tools and a case, at £29.99 in the saved listing, and you still have nothing that grips a log. Treat it as a three-tool set with a lid, not as a five-piece that has been tidied away.
Why does the Lambeth listing say both 4 and 5?
The item type says four pieces. The bullets list a poker, a brush, a shovel, fork-shaped tongs and a stand, which is five names. Both lines are on B078XY5C7W. If you need tongs, the bullets are the line that answers. The item type is the line that will mislead you if you stop there. The same kind of clash appears on HomeZone, where the components name five tools and the pieces field says 1.
Is a hearth tidy enough for a stove I load by hand?
A hearth tidy, in Manor's guide, has two tools and is often about 30 to 36 cm. That can brush a hearth you do not cook on. A stove you load by hand needs a poker that reaches, a shovel for ash you have decided to remove, and tongs if you lift. Two tools will not cover that evening. Choose the named tools for the job, then check length on the buying guide, because a full five-piece set can still be too short.
