Fireplace companion set buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at a stand on amazon.co.uk before you have checked whether the poker will reach the back of the fire. A fireplace companion set buying guide is that order of checks: named tools, one height you have measured, then the stand and the joints, and only then the price. The [fireplace tool set comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fireplace-tool-set) holds the twelve listings, with shelf prices from the saved listings of 19 October 2026 running from £11.19 to £34.99. This page is the checklist those rows sit on. Nothing here is a laboratory test. If you buy through a link to amazon.co.uk from the comparison, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the set has to include

A fireside companion set, in the sense UK stove shops still use, is a stand plus the metal tools you use on a solid-fuel fire. Stoves4life describes the usual group as a poker, a brush, a shovel and tongs. mybest UK treats the shovel, the brush and the poker as the minimum you should be able to name before you add anything else. Blue Oak's buying article treats tongs as worth having on an open fire and on a deep stove. That is a retailer's preference, not a British Standard. In this batch, four-piece on the VOUNOT listing and on the Fire Vida Aston specification means tongs are not named, while JVL Lambeth's bullets name tongs even though the item type says four pieces. The Fire Vida Aston listing, B014WAUSGO, was still inconsistent on amazon.co.uk on 21 October 2026: an Aston title, a Denby grey bullet, and a Warwick five-piece blurb. The file does not say which object ships. If the only decision is whether tongs are in the box, use the 4 piece or 5 piece fireplace set page before you compare finishes.

Length, and listings that print two

Measure from your usual stance, with a glove on, to the point in the firebox you actually need to rake. Then compare that reach with every height the listing prints, not with the first centimetre in the title. Fire Vida's black set prints about 52.5 cm in one field and about 62 cm in another. VOUNOT prints 53 cm and 60 cm. JVL Belvoir prints about 41.5 cm in the bullet and 4.15 cm in the dimension field. The 4.15 cm figure is what the listing shows. We have left it as printed, because correcting it would invent a product the page does not document. Imaginfires suggests a fireplace tool of at least 66 cm. That line is a shop article, not BS 8423 and not a HETAS rule. JVL Lambeth's bullet height is 66 cm at £11.19, while Kingson K409B is also about 66 cm at £34.99. How those centimetres feel on a log burner is on the companion set for a log burner page.

Stand and handles

VOUNOT and HomeZone reviews describe the other tools falling off the stand when one piece is lifted. A Kingson K409B review says the loaded stand can tip. mybest UK notes that screwed handles can loosen, and that pattern shows up on the Fire Vida black set, on both Valiant listings, on HomeZone and on JVL Belvoir. Individual reviews also describe a failed spot weld, which a nut will not rescue. A missing nut on arrival is a fault to raise with the seller under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not a running-in period. On Fire Vida Buxton, B01DA8N7FI, reviewers dispute the brass, and nothing in the file establishes solid brass.

Price after the checks

A higher shelf price in this band is not a longer tool and not a safer one. The saved listings of 19 October 2026 put JVL Lambeth at £11.19 and the dearest Kingson at £34.99, with a mid shelf around £19 to £24. JVL Belvoir at £23.97 costs more than Lambeth, and the reviews call Belvoir small. Kingson F521 at £31.99 is listed around 47 cm, so the top of the band can still be a short shaft beside a stove. Live amazon.co.uk prices move after a file is saved, and you should read the basket price on the day.

Common questions

What has to be in the box?
You want a poker, a shovel and a brush named in the bullets or the specification, on a stand that can hold them. Tongs are the extra tool if you lift logs or coal. A piece count in the title does not replace those names. If the title, a bullet and the specification describe different products, as they do on the Fire Vida Aston listing, do not guess which one will arrive.
How do I read two heights on one listing?
Write down every centimetre the page prints, including a figure that looks like a decimal slip. Measure your own reach with a glove on, and keep the set only if a height you trust is long enough. Fire Vida black prints 52.5 cm and 62 cm, VOUNOT prints 53 cm and 60 cm, and JVL Belvoir prints 41.5 cm and 4.15 cm. The 4.15 cm field is left as the listing shows it.
Are brass-coloured handles brass?
Not on the evidence in this file. Fire Vida Buxton is sold with a brass colour claim, and reviewers dispute it. Treat brass as a finish word until a material line you trust says otherwise. The same caution applies when one field says steel and another says cast iron.
Is a higher price in this band a longer tool?
It is not. JVL Belvoir at £23.97 is the set reviewers call too small, and it costs more than JVL Lambeth at £11.19, whose bullet height is 66 cm. Kingson K409B is also about 66 cm, at £34.99. Length, the stand and the joints come first. The pound figure does not sort them for you.
Does the set replace a fireguard?
It does not. BS 8423 is the domestic fireguard specification, and RoSPA points carers to a guard made to that standard. A companion set has no spark screen and no claim to keep a child back from the hearth. It also does not replace a carbon monoxide alarm, and it says nothing about whether your fuel is lawful in a smoke control area.
