How to use a stove fan

Updated: October 2026

The fan is in your hand, or it is still in the basket, and the stove is the thing you actually know. How to use a stove fan is mostly where you stand it, when you leave it alone, and when the problem is the fire rather than the blades. Products Compared used the twelve amazon.co.uk listings, Valiant's FIR361 sheet, and public placement notes, on 15 October 2026. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Model choice stays on the [stove fan comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/stove-fan). Stand the fan at the back, to the side of the flue, where the base is hot and the fins can take cooler air.

Put it where the fins can breathe

Set the fan on a flat part of the stove top, towards the back, beside the flue pipe rather than in front of it. Valiant's sheet for the FIR361 says never to place it in front of the flue. Ecofan's UK FAQ, which is not one of these twelve prices, says to slide the fan forward if the wall gap is under about 150 mm. Those figures are rules of thumb from the sources, not a measurement of every Amazon fan. The front edge is the common mistake. Air drawn from behind the fan is what the blades push into the room. If the stove manual says the top plate should carry nothing, ask the installer. A low mantel is covered on the small stove fan and low clearance page. The listing's 8 × 7 × 4 cm line is not the height to use.

What you should see as the stove warms

Light the fire as you usually do, with dry wood, and leave the fan where you stood it. These listings do not give a minute count you can trust. JossaColar states that its fan will not generate electricity below about 50°C. Valiant's sheet starts the FIR361 around 50°C, with an optimum surface of 80–250°C. The Tomersun mini's bullets say 80–345°C, so that short fan waits for a hotter top. Use the band on the fan you bought. You should see a slow start, then a quicker spin. If nothing moves, the top may still be cool, the fan may be tight against the flue, or the surface may be a cool-touch skin. Wait until the stove has cooled before you move it. JossaColar describes a lift above 350°C. That strip protects the fan. It does not turn the stove down.

If it spins and the room does not change

A fast blade and no breeze is a common complaint. The module can turn a light rotor while the air never reaches the sofa. Cooler air has to reach the fins from behind, and the blades have to point into the room. Standing the fan at the front often produces spin, and no felt air. Do not keep sliding a hot fan around the top. A small fan can spin and feel weak in a normal lounge. TITECK reviews say the breeze is weak beyond a very small room. One TITECK comment put the sound nearer 35 dB than the printed 25 dB. None of those noise lines was measured here. If a blade scrapes the guard, stop once the stove is cool.

When to stop and get help

Take the fan off only when the stove is cool enough to touch. A hot aluminium base will burn. HETAS describes overfiring as blackened glass, red-hot metal, a whooshing fire, and a room that is far too hot. Reduce the fire the way the stove maker tells you. A lift strip that has raised the fan means the top is at that listing's limit. Do not push the base back down while it is hot. Call a professional for a new installation, glowing metal, a carbon monoxide alarm, or a sweep. A BS EN 50291 alarm is not replaced by a fan. Fuel rules sit on the stove fan for a log burner page. If the blades never turn on a top you know is hot, see why a stove fan will not spin.

Common questions

Where do I put a stove fan?
Stand it on a flat part of the top, towards the back, beside the flue, so cooler air can reach the fins. Valiant's sheet says never in front of the flue. Ecofan's FAQ says to slide the fan forward if the wall gap is under about 150 mm. The front lip looks hot, and it is the placement that often spins without a breeze you can feel.
How long after lighting should it start?
There is no reliable minute count in these listings. They say the fan starts once the top is hot, or after a few minutes. JossaColar needs above about 50°C. Valiant's sheet starts the FIR361 around 50°C. The Tomersun mini's bullets start the band at 80°C. If your top heats slowly, the blades will wait. Watching the clock will not heat a cold top.
Why is it spinning but I feel no air?
The blades can turn on a small current while little air reaches the room. Check that cooler air can come from behind, and that the fan is not pointed at a wall. Front placement is the usual cause. Do not keep moving it while the base is hot.
Can I move it while the stove is hot?
No. Leave it until the top is cool enough to touch. The base is the part that takes the heat, and the notes in this set say not to grab it. If the position is wrong, correct it on the next cold stove, not during this fire. Correct a bad position on the next cold stove.
What does the strip under the base do?
On the listings that describe one, it is a bimetal or lift device that raises the fan when the top is too hot for the module. JossaColar states a lift above 350°C. It protects the fan. It does not control the fire, and it is not a stove thermometer. Pushing it back down onto a hot plate works against the only overheat behaviour the listing gave you.
