Fire bricks for a pizza oven

Updated: 22.10.2026

You are pricing a wood-fired oven floor, and the cheap vermiculite stove boards look like the same product as the clay bricks. Fire bricks for a pizza oven are the dense ones, thick enough to store heat, bedded with a cement that sets in the open air. A 25 mm stove board is a poor cooking floor. A mortar that only cures near 800°C is a poor outdoor joint. The [firebricks comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/firebricks) lists the packs. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices on 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Why the oven floor wants dense brick

A pizza oven floor works by holding heat and giving it back to the dough. Dense fireclay is the material sold for that job. Vermiculite board is sold to insulate a steel stove, which is the opposite thermal task. Vitcas says dense brick is not insulation, and that fireclay and vermiculite are not substitutes. If you line the cooking face with the light boards from the stove packs, you have bought a liner that stove makers use so heat does not soak into the body.Vermiculite vs fireclay is the longer version of that split. For an oven floor, skip the vermiculite rows. The joint has to survive weather as well as flame.

Thickness in this set versus a full floor

Every clay pack kept here is titled 230 × 114 × 25 mm. That is a stove-brick thickness. Vitcas compares 64 mm bricks at about 3.5 kg with 32 mm bricks at about 1.75 kg, and points you to 64 mm when you want mass and 32 mm for a slimmer lining. A UK build diary used 64 mm bricks, which are not these 25 mm packs. A 25 mm clay tile can repair a thin bed. Twelve thin bricks do not become a 64 mm floor. If you only need a few rectangles of 25 mm, the six-pack at £25.19 has reviews that mention a pizza oven and a fire pit. One face is about 0.026 m², so a 500 × 500 mm patch is about ten faces before cuts. The buying guide is why you still read every size line. Agreement on 230 × 114 × 25 mm is not thickness.

Cement that can cure outside

W T Knowles says its traditional fireclay mortar needs about 800°C for about three hours to cure, and it does not recommend that cement for pizza ovens or outdoor barbecues. Knowles points outdoor work to an air-setting fire cement, with joints about 1–3 mm. Vitcas sells an outdoor oven cement that is a hydraulic mortar it says sets without a long high fire, stated to 1200°C, with the bricks wetted first and joints from about 3 mm. Follow the tub you actually bought. Do not use that outdoor cement as the mortar for a stove liner. If the dome, the hearth, or the flue is structural, that design belongs with someone competent, and in England much of that work is notifiable.

What these listings do and do not claim

Four clay packs are the oven candidates. The four-pack is £19.99, the six-pack is £25.19, the ten-pack is £32.99, and the twelve-pack is £38.99. All four state 230 × 114 × 25 mm and 1300°C. The six-pack names alumina clay, prints 9 kg, and has 4.8 from 48 reviews that include a pizza oven and a fire pit. That is the best value clay pack on the best fire bricks page, because the other three show 4.7 from 12 and the same two stored texts: a reptile basking platform and a gas furnace. Each of those listings asks whether the bricks are safe for food and does not answer. There is no food-contact certificate in the file. Do not read a grilling attribute as a food-safety claim. Keep 25 mm clay for a 25 mm repair.

Common questions

Can stove vermiculite line a pizza-oven floor?
It is the wrong default. Vermiculite boards in this set are light stove liners, stated around 1100–1200°C, and stove makers use them to insulate steel. A cooking floor wants dense fireclay so the surface stores heat. Vitcas treats the two materials as different jobs, not as substitutes you pick by price.
Is 25 mm fireclay thick enough?
It matches a 25 mm repair. It is thin for a whole oven floor. Vitcas discusses 32 mm and 64 mm bricks when the aim is mass, at about 1.75 kg and 3.5 kg in that range. A UK build diary used 64 mm. The amazon.co.uk packs here are 25 mm titles. Buying twelve of them does not recreate a 64 mm bed.
What cement cures outdoors?
Not a fireclay that needs roughly 800°C for about three hours. Knowles says that grade is the wrong choice for pizza ovens and outdoor barbecues, and points to air-setting cement with joints around 1–3 mm. Vitcas’s outdoor oven cement is described as hydraulic, wetting the bricks first, stated to 1200°C, with joints from about 3 mm. Use the instructions on the tub you buy.
Are the amazon clay bricks food safe?
The listings ask the question and do not answer it. There is no food-contact certificate in the file. A review that mentions a pizza oven, on the £25.19 six-pack, is evidence of use, not a safety approval. Do not treat the grilling attributes as a food-contact claim.
Do I mortar a stove the same way as an oven floor?
No. Many stove liners are meant to sit dry, and mortar there can block air gaps. An outdoor oven floor needs a cement that cures without an 800°C soak, in a thin joint. The products are different, and so is the reason for the joint.
