Fire glass for a gas fire pit

Updated: 22.10.2026

You have an outdoor gas fire pit, or you are standing in front of a wood burner or a living-room gas fire with a bag of glass in the basket. Fire glass for a gas fire pit, in this set, is loose media for an outdoor pit whose manual already allows it, on the fuel that manual and the listing both name. It is not a wood fuel, and it is not an extra coal for an indoor gas fire. The [fireplace glass comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/fireplace-glass) holds six amazon.co.uk bags, prices captured on 19 October 2026. Products Compared used the listings, the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, HSE guidance and GOV.UK. There was no lab test. Outdoor gas and propane pits

Use loose glass on an outdoor gas or propane pit only when the manual allows it, and only to the depth that manual shows. Teamson clear and red name outdoor garden gas pits and print 600 °C. Blue names propane. yarlung names propane and natural gas, and UK reviews include explosions. Hiland names natural gas or propane. Firebrand names ethanol on a 1 kg title, from five reviews. Cold, dry glass with the pilot clear is not gas fitting. Regulation 3 sends the pipe, valve, flue, and a flame that spills or smells to a Gas Safe engineer. Hiland's indoor or outdoor line is not a living-room approval.

Indoor gas fires and the fuel bed

An indoor gas fire's coals, pebbles or logs are part of the type approval. Regulation 26 restricts taking that appliance outside the approval. Stove Wizard says not to add pieces against the requirements. Legend's Vantage manual says no extra coals and genuine parts only. Leave the bed unless the fire's own instructions name this glass. A smell, spillage, or yellow sooty flame after you move it is a Gas Safe call. A BS 8423 guard is not a property of the beads. A cracked door needs a pane such as SCHOTT ROBAX, not one of these bags.

Wood, smoke control, and what glass does not change

Wood is out of scope. Teamson asks about a wood-burning pit and does not record a yes. Smoke control limits chimney smoke and requires an authorised fuel unless the appliance is exempt. In England, GOV.UK cites up to £300 for chimney smoke and up to £1,000 for unauthorised fuel in a non-exempt appliance. The council confirms the area. Fire glass does not exempt a stove, and Approved Document J does not specify this media.

Use it, leave it, or call

Use the glass for outdoor gas, propane or, on the small jar, ethanol, when the manual allows it and the listing names that fuel. Then follow how to lay fire glass for the wash and the depth. Leave the bag for wood, a stove, an indoor coal bed, or a lava-only manual. About £3.33 per kilogram does not buy an exception. Call a Gas Safe engineer for the pipe, the valve, the flue, or a sooty spill.

Common questions

Can you put this glass on a wood-burning pit?
These listings do not give a yes. Teamson's pages raise the wood question and do not answer it. The stated uses are gas, propane or, on Firebrand, ethanol. yarlung's line that it replaces wood is advertising language for a glass diamond, and two UK reviews say those diamonds exploded. Ordinary glass can crack or melt. Keep wood pits on the media their maker allows, which this bag has not shown itself to be.
Can you add it to an indoor gas fire that came with coals?
Only if that fire's instructions name glass and show the layout. The coals are part of the type approval. Regulation 26 is the rule against taking the appliance outside that approval. Stove Wizard and the Legend Vantage wording both say not to add extra coals. A listing that says gas fires or indoor or outdoor is not that instruction. Leave the commissioned bed as it is unless an engineer tells you otherwise.
Does every outdoor bag need a Gas Safe visit?
No. Placing loose glass on an outdoor pit, when the manual allows it and you leave the pilot clear, is not gas-fitting work. The visit is for the gas itself: pipe, valve, flue, and a domestic appliance that has to be worked on by someone competent. HSE points that domestic work at Gas Safe engineers. The bag does not create a visit on its own, and it does not remove one when the gas train is the job.
What work does need a Gas Safe engineer?
The pipe, the valve, the flue, and a fixed indoor gas fire. Also a pit or a fire that spills, smells of gas, or burns yellow and sooty after you have moved the fuel bed. Regulation 3 requires competence. Rearranging cold media on an outdoor pit the manual allows is a different task, and it still stops if the flame will not hold.
Does fire glass change smoke-control rules?
It does not. Smoke control limits chimney smoke and requires an authorised fuel unless the appliance is exempt for that fuel. GOV.UK gives England penalties up to £300 and up to £1,000. The council confirms the area. A decorative bag is not an exemption and not an authorised fuel. Approved Document J does not set a spec for this glass. A non-exempt stove still needs the right fuel, with or without beads in the grate.
Why does indoor on a listing not mean the living-room fire?
Hiland prints indoor or outdoor on a crushed-glass listing for natural gas or propane. Firebrand's title says gas fires. Those words describe the seller's claim about where the bag might be used. They are not the type approval for the coal bed in your fireplace. Indoor gas fires are commissioned with a set layout. Extra glass from amazon.co.uk is not part of that layout unless the fire's manual shows it.
What should you do if the flame goes yellow and sooty after you move the bed?
Turn it off the way the manual describes, ventilate, and do not keep relighting it to burn the soot off. Yellow, sooty combustion after a disturbed bed can mean the layout or the air is wrong. That is a Gas Safe call, not another bag of glass and not a deeper layer. If you smell gas, leave the appliance alone and follow the gas-emergency steps you already have for the house.
