Narrow log store for a small garden

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a side passage, a small back garden, or a living room that cannot hold a winter of fuel, and a full-width rack will not fit. A narrow log store for a small garden is either a slim timber bay outside or a vertical holder for a few days of dry logs inside. Those are different jobs. A 3 m steel rack is not a small-space product. Prices here are from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. The maker sizes below come from Rowlinson's own page, not from the amazon details cell. The wider table is the [log store comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/log-store).

Outdoor, but narrow

The outdoor option in this set is the Rowlinson Narrow Log Store, model LOGNAR1, at £106.02, with 4.2 from 110 reviews. Rowlinson's own page describes the external size as about 1,560 mm high, 620 mm wide and 560 mm deep, which is roughly 156 × 62 × 56 cm, with about 327 litres and a kindling shelf. The amazon details table instead says 22 × 24.4 × 61.4 cm and a 5 kg shelf capacity, next to an item weight of 21.5 kg. Those cells cannot be the store. Ignore them. There is no fabric cover, which is an advantage in a side passage where a flapping sheet would catch the wind. If you are still choosing between timber and a covered steel frame, that argument is on metal or wooden log store.

A stand in the room

Indoors, the small footprint in this set is a vertical VOUNOT holder, not a second copy of the Rowlinson. The 112 cm rack is £25.99 with a 33 × 33 cm footprint, an MDF base and no cover. The taller stand is £34.99, with heights of 120, 145 or 170 cm on a footprint of about 45 × 32 cm, plus an MDF shelf for kindling. Both show 4.2 from 345 reviews, with overlapping titles, so that count is shared. Do not add it twice. A vertical rack does not replace the outdoor store. An MDF shelf is not described as an exterior board. The way to keep logs dry is on how to store firewood.

What still will not fit

Open sides are the indoor failure. One UK review says logs fell out of the vertical holder and marked a wall. Uneven lengths do not sit like the photograph, and cross bars can arrive wonky, with screw holes that are hard to start. If a fall would hit a child, a glass door or the stove, the 33 cm frame is the wrong corner even though it is narrow. Damage on arrival, including a marked panel or a split shelf corner, is in the shared review text, so check the carton before you build it into a tight alcove.

A 3 m rack is not a small garden

A 3 m covered VOUNOT, 300 × 116 × 26 cm at £45.99, is the opposite of a small garden. It needs three metres of clear wall. The Helios & Hestia rack shortens by sections, down from 244 cm toward about 80 cm, but it is 35 cm deep, has no cover and no floor, and one buyer found that depth too large for their burner logs. Shortening the length does not fix the depth. For a tight garden, open the Rowlinson using the maker's 156 × 62 × 56 cm, or open a vertical holder for two days of dry logs. Do not open a 3 m rack and hope the return will stretch.

Common questions

What fits a narrow side passage?
The Rowlinson narrow store, at about 62 cm wide and 56 cm deep on the maker's page, is the timber bay aimed at that gap. You still need to measure the passage, including handles and gates, because 560 mm of depth plus a little lean is more than a tape reading of the clear width.
How big is the Rowlinson narrow store really?
Use the maker's figures: about 1,560 × 620 × 560 mm, roughly 156 cm high, 62 cm wide and 56 cm deep, with about 327 litres and a shelf. The amazon details cell of 22 × 24.4 × 61.4 cm and 5 kg is not usable next to a 21.5 kg item weight.
Can a vertical rack replace an outdoor store?
No. The 112 cm holder and the 120 to 170 cm stand keep a small pile of dry logs near the stove. They do not season a winter delivery, and they have no waterproof cover.
How much wood can I keep in the room?
About two days of logs that are already at or under 20% moisture, and not stacked on the hearth. That is the HETAS and Woodsure practice, not a litre rating printed on these racks.
Will logs fall out of an open vertical holder?
They can. The frame is open on the sides, and one UK review says logs fell out and hit a wall. The MDF base on the 112 cm model keeps the bottom off the floor. It does not close the sides.
Is a 3 m rack ever a small-space product?
Only if your small problem is depth and you genuinely have three metres of wall. The black 3 m VOUNOT is 26 cm deep, which is slim, and 300 cm long, which is not.
Why does Amazon show tiny dimensions for the Rowlinson?
Because the details table on that listing conflicts with the item weight and with the product owners describe. A 22 × 24.4 × 61.4 cm cell and a 5 kg capacity cannot be a 21.5 kg timber store.
