Log store buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a first log store for a stove or an open fire, and the racks on amazon.co.uk look similar until the logs arrive. A log store buying guide has to start with the job, the length of the wood you actually burn, and whether rain will hit the top. Some households still have green wood to season. Others already have dry bags and only need them off the soil. The ten listings, with prices from amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026, sit on the [log store comparison](/hub/fireplaces-and-stoves/log-store). Three jobs, not one winner

A winter stack, a dry holding bay and a living-room stand are three different products that share a search result. HETAS puts a typical evening-stove household somewhere between 1.5 and 3 cubic metres of seasoned hardwood for a winter. That is their range, not a measurement of any rack in this comparison. A 2 m steel frame will not hold that volume, and a 33 cm vertical holder will not either. The only timber store, the Rowlinson Narrow Log Store, is £106.02. If the garden can take a slatted bay and you still have green wood, read metal or wooden log store before you assume a fabric cover does the same work.

Log length before the litre claim

Measure three logs from the batch you burn, including the short ones, before you trust a capacity cell. The covered VOUNOT racks here are 26 cm or 40 cm deep. UK reviews on the green 200 × 115 × 40 cm rack say the bars need long logs. Shorter stove logs fell through until buyers added a runner or a lattice. The Helios & Hestia frame is 35 cm deep at its full 244 cm length. One UK buyer called that depth too large for their burner logs. A stated 200 kg, or the NALONE listing's 2,500 lb, is a cell on the page. This comparison did not load the racks.

Cover, roof and airflow

HETAS storage advice is easy to break with a fitted sock: keep the top covered, leave the sides open, and keep the wood off the ground. A waterproof cover in the box is not the same as a roof with an overhang. On the green VOUNOT, repeated UK reviews say the cover is too deep, sags, flaps in wind, or tears at the eyelets, and fixings were not supplied. The NALONE at £39.99 includes a 300D cover and a carry bag, and several UK reviews still say the cover was far too big for the frame. The Rowlinson in this set has no fabric cover. The stacking order is on how to store firewood.

When the listing disagrees with itself

Several pages in this set print two sizes. Use the bullet that describes the rack you can stand in the garden, and treat a details cell that contradicts it as unusable until you measure the delivery. The NALONE bullet says 4 ft × 46 in × 13.8 in. The details table says 35.1 × 116.8 × 35.1 cm and 454 g. The Kendane bullet says 122 × 30.5 × 100 cm, while the details table says 43 × 33 × 17 cm. The Rowlinson details table says 22 × 24.4 × 61.4 cm and a 5 kg shelf capacity beside an item weight of 21.5 kg. Do not order it as a 22 cm box.

Common questions

How big a log store do I need for a winter?
You will refill through the season, or you will need more than one store. Measure the wall you have, then match the store to log length, rather than buying the longest frame on the page.
Should I buy a cover or an open timber roof?
Buy a cover when the wood is already dry and you want rain off the top at a lower price. Buy a timber roof with open slats when you are still seasoning, because air at the sides matters as much as a dry top.
What if my logs are shorter than the rack is deep?
Short logs fall through open bars. Measure your shortest log against the gap, not against the advertised kilogram claim. If the log cannot bridge the bars, the rack is the wrong shape until you add a floor.
Can one store both season wood and hold tonight's logs?
One store can do both only if it keeps the main stack outside, off the ground, with the top covered and the sides open. The pile you carry indoors should stay small, about what you will burn over a couple of days, and it should not sit on the hearth.
Which amazon size figure do I trust when two are printed?
Trust the bullet that matches the title's stated size, then measure the frame when it arrives. Those conflicts are on the listings. They are not a size you should cut timber to.
Is a cheap covered rack enough if the wood is already Ready to Burn?
It can be enough for storage if the wood is already dry, the rack is raised, and you do not seal the sides. Ready to Burn is the England mark for wood sold at or under 20% moisture. It does not survive a cover that traps damp.
Do I need planning permission for a rack?
These amazon listings do not cite a planning decision, and a freestanding steel rack of this size is not the same project as a large fixed store built on a boundary. If you are pouring a base or building a tall timber barn, ask the local council before you start.
