The stove has been cold since March, the first frosty week is on the forecast, and you are deciding whether one visit will carry you through to spring. How often to sweep a wood burner depends on the fuel, then on how hard you run it. HETAS encourages at least twice a year for wood and for bituminous house coal, and at least once a year for smokeless fuel. Those figures are scheme advice. The HETAS pages used here do not cite a statute that makes twice a year a legal interval.

Book one sweep before the heating season, and book the second after the peak if wood is the fuel. Peter F. checked the HETAS pages on how to sweep a chimney, when to book, why a sweep is needed, and the chimney-sweep service note, plus the Defra smoke-control leaflet. Kindling prices are the amazon.co.uk shelf on 20 October 2026. This page did not sweep a flue or run a lab test. In short

HETAS encourages at least two sweeps a year for wood, and at least one for smokeless fuel. Book before the heating season, then again after the peak if you burn wood, and add a visit if you use the stove hard. A lined flue is still on that diary, and dry kindling does not reset it.

How often to sweep a wood burner depends on the fuel

Wood and smokeless fuel do not share a diary. HETAS encourages a chimney sweep twice a year when you burn wood, and the same encouragement for bituminous house coal. A smokeless fuel chimney once a year is the floor, with a further visit if you use the appliance hard. The pages say encourages, and at least, and they do not cite a statute. This guide does not call the interval a legal fine.

The Defra smoke-control leaflet puts regular sweeping at up to twice a year, and it tells you to avoid slumbering. Up to twice is not HETAS's at least twice for wood, and it is not a cap that forbids a third visit.

Dry sticks and dry logs cut the smoke from a poor light. They do not reset the sweep interval. The top pick in our kindling comparison is the Log Barn wood-wool firelighters, 200, at £12.99 on amazon.co.uk on 20 October 2026, with 4.7 from 22,250 ratings. That count is the listing total, not a UK-only figure. The box lights kindling. It does not sweep a flue.

Manufactured blocks stay on the once-a-year floor when the fuel is smokeless and the stove may burn them. Smoke-control fuel rules are in what you can burn in a smoke control area.

Book the sweep before the heating season

The useful windows are before you start lighting, and after the peak if you sweep twice. HETAS puts one visit before the heating season and one after the heaviest use. Sweeps are busy when the season turns, so the autumn booking is the one that fails. Book the chimney sweep in autumn, before the first week you want a fire. Wait for a full diary and you either light into an unswept chimney or sit cold.

The second sweep after Christmas means after the peak, not a fixed morning in January. If December and early January are your heaviest weeks, the second visit falls in late winter or early spring, once the stove can stay cold. A brush on 27 December, while you still want a fire every night, misses that point. If your heavy weeks are February, move the second visit with them. Two brushes in one fortnight do not match the shape.

Sweep before you light after a long idle period, even if the last brush was in March and the first fire waits until October. HETAS records 4,300 chimney fires in England, Wales, and Scotland from April 2018 to March 2019. That count is historical, it excludes Northern Ireland, and it is not a promise that two brushes stop every fire. These pages state no national fee, so none is invented here.

Weekend use does not cut the wood minimum

HETAS says heavy use can justify more than the minimum. A stove that heats the house most evenings, especially if you slumber it, can need a third visit in the same year. Ask what came down the flue. Soot that is thick in October does not wait until March because a leaflet said two sweeps. Bring the date forward, and tell the sweep the fuel and how many evenings you light.

How often if you only burn at weekends still follows the fuel. Wood stays at twice a year on the HETAS floor used here. Lighter use can mean a lighter deposit. It is not a half-interval, and it does not move you onto the smokeless line.

Catching up a missed autumn sweep by burning hotter for a month fails, because a hotter fire is not a brush. Booking June and November when you only light in January is a different plan from a pre-season sweep plus a post-peak sweep. Put one wood visit before the first fire, and the second after the weeks you actually burned. If the year was almost unused, still sweep before you light.

Sweep a lined flue, and keep the service separate

You still need to sweep a lined flue. Soot and tar settle on a liner, and HETAS does not drop the interval because the chimney is lined. Power-sweep attachments can damage some liners. The sweep who can see the job chooses the tool, not a setting copied from a forum. Say the flue is lined, and say the fuel, when you book.

If you do not know about a liner, say that. A short metal flue stays on the same interval. Guessing that a stove pipe stays clean is how a small run gets missed.

A sweep clears the chimney. A service is the stove: seals, baffles, glass, and the checks the maker expects. These HETAS pages set the sweep diary and do not publish a service date, so this guide invents none. Asking for both on the same morning is reasonable, because the fire is out. Ask what the price includes before you assume the ropes were checked.

Use a HETAS approved sweep and ask for the identification card. Rods from the garage do not show you a liner. Let the fire go out and the ash cool before the visit. If you lit the stove the evening before, wait until the ash is cold. No source here states a fixed number of hours. Clear the hearth. A fireplace tool set lifts cold ash from the grate. It does not reach the pot, and it is not the sweep.

Warning signs override the diary

The calendar is for a flue that has been behaving. Smoke in the room, a soot smell from a cold stove, tar, falling soot, or a burn that has worsened with nothing else changed mean you stop. They do not mean you wait until March because you swept in September.

Those signs are in when to book a chimney sweep. If one is already true, book and leave the fire out. This page does not repeat that diagnosis.

A carbon monoxide alarm is not a diary check. If it sounds, or anyone feels ill, leave the house first. Alarm standards for a stove are in carbon monoxide alarms for a stove. A silent alarm does not prove the flue is clear. Between visits, burn dry fuel with the air set as the stove expects while it gets hot.

If the sweep found a heavy flue, bring the next visit forward. If it was light and you still burn wood, keep twice a year. Eighteen months is a gap these pages do not offer.

Common questions

Is twice a year a law or HETAS advice?
HETAS encourages at least twice a year when you burn wood, and at least once when you burn smokeless fuel. The pages used here do not cite a statute for those intervals, so this article calls them scheme advice. The Defra smoke-control leaflet says sweep regularly, up to twice a year, which is different wording and still not a fine named on the HETAS pages. Heavy use can justify more than the minimum. A warning sign can pull the next visit forward before the date you had planned.
I burn smokeless fuel. Is once enough?
Once a year is the HETAS floor for smokeless fuel. It is not a promise that a hard-worked stove is finished for twelve months. If the stove is your main heat, or the last sweep found a heavy deposit, book again inside the year. Bituminous house coal sits with wood at twice a year, so a bag that is not smokeless does not inherit the longer gap. A manufactured block follows the once-a-year floor only when it is smokeless and the stove may burn it.
I only light the stove at weekends. Can I sweep less often?
If the fuel is wood, the HETAS floor used here stays at twice a year. Weekend fires are lighter use and can leave a lighter deposit. They are not a half-interval, and they do not move you onto the once-a-year smokeless line. A stove lit most evenings, especially if it is slumbered, can justify more than twice. Keep one wood visit before the first fire of the season. Put any extra visit on what the sweep found in the flue.
When in the year should the two visits fall?
Put one sweep before the heating season, and the second after the peak if you are on two visits. Where December and January are the heavy months, the second sweep after Christmas falls in late winter or early spring, once the stove can stay cold. It does not mean a brush on Boxing Day while you still want a fire every night. If your heavy weeks are later, move the second visit with them. Book the autumn slot early, because sweeps are busy when the season turns.
Does a lined chimney still need sweeping?
Yes. A liner still collects soot and tar, and HETAS does not drop the interval because the flue is lined. Tell the sweep it is lined before they choose a tool. Power-sweep attachments can damage some liners, and that choice is theirs. A short stove pipe stays on the same fuel interval. If you do not know whether a liner is fitted, say so when you book. Skipping a year because the flue is metal is a guess these pages do not support.
Should the stove be serviced at the same time?
A sweep clears the chimney. A service is the stove: seals, baffles, glass, and the checks the maker expects. The HETAS pages behind this diary do not set a service date, so this guide does not invent one. Asking the sweep to look at the stove on the same morning is reasonable, because the fire is already out. Ask what the price includes, and ask to see a HETAS identification card. A swept flue is not, by itself, a full service.
How long after the last fire before the sweep arrives?
Let the fire go out and let the ash cool before the visit. Do not keep a fire in so the room is warm when they knock. If you lit the stove the evening before, leave it until the ash is cold. The sources used here do not state a fixed number of hours, so this page does not invent one. Clear the hearth so there is room to work. A fireplace tool set shifts cold ash. It does not reach the pot, and it does not replace the sweep.
Where do the warning signs live if I already know the interval?
Urgent signs sit in when to book a chimney sweep: smoke in the room, a cold soot smell, tar, falling soot, or a fire that has got worse with nothing else changed. Those override a September and March plan. Stop and book. This page owns the ordinary diary. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or anyone feels ill, leave the house first. Dry kindling does not clear a flue that is already restricted.
