Common questions about fencing and wire

What is a garden fence on these pages?
A garden fence in this hub is a pack of decorative panels you press into soil, not a 1.8 m timber boundary with concreted posts. Twelve amazon.co.uk listings run from about £12.49 to about £174.92. Eleven kits are coated metal and one is a plastic wood-effect picket. The top pick is the Koknows 76.2 cm pack. A plug-in fence is the same kind of low border on stakes. It is not a boundary panel and it is not an electric fence. These pages were not lab-tested.
What is the difference between chicken wire and aviary wire?
Aviary wire, as that comparison uses the name, is welded steel mesh with a small square hole for a flight, a hutch front, or the lower part of a run. Hexagonal chicken wire is twisted and flexible. Eight aviary rolls run from about £18.99 to about £50.45. The top pick is the Roshield 900 mm by 6 m roll with a 6 mm hole. The wire mesh fence page mixes chicken wire, PVC-coated welded mesh and fine cloth in eleven rolls. No lab test was run.
How do the electric fence pages split the kit?
An energiser sends a short pulse, about once a second, down wire, tape or net. The main comparison has 15 listings, from about £36 to about £140, and the top pick is the XSTOP BA80 12V unit. The 12V page is for a fence with no 13 A socket. A solar energiser has its own panel and battery. Polywire, tread-in posts and a fence tester are separate comparisons. A kilometre figure on the box is a clean-wire claim, not a length through grass.
Is the deer fence here a wire fence?
The deer fence comparison keeps three black polypropylene nets, each stated at 2.1 m, from about £14.59 to about £36.99. The top pick is the MEKKAPRO 19.8 m roll. The Royal Horticultural Society and the British Deer Society, as cited on that page, describe a proper fence rather than a slack light net. A deer net still has to be tall enough and closed at the ground. It is not high-tensile line wire. Products Compared did not test these nets in a field.
What is a WPC fence in this set?
A WPC fence is a garden board or a privacy kit made from wood-plastic composite, sold in Britain as composite fencing. This comparison has two amazon.co.uk listings. The top pick is the KARAT kit, titled 180 cm, at about £189.40, and it includes poles. The other listing is grey slats at about £55.99 with no board count and no posts. The page is not a ranking of every composite fence in the UK, and it is not a lab test.
Do the gabion pages include the stone?
A gabion on the cages page is an empty wire cage you fill with stone. Eight cages run from about £26.99 to about £280.43, and the stone is a separate purchase. The gabion stones comparison has one amazon.co.uk listing, a bag of green glass, at about £98.22. The title says 25 kg and the technical details say 2 kg. That page names no top pick and no best value. Decorative glass is not the hard angular fill a retaining wall uses.
Why is there no top pick for a garden gate?
The garden gate comparison covers one listing, the iHYTOON green metal kit at about £85.87. The page does not name a top pick or a best value, because one listing cannot be a winner against itself and the size and post lines on the kit conflict. A garden gate here is the leaf, not the hinges, the latch, a no-dig border, or an arbour. Measure the opening before you treat the kit as a match. No lab test was run.
What is a fence post spike, and what is a post support?
A fence post spike on these pages is either a drive-in socket for a new post or a repair stake driven beside a leaning post. Eleven listings run from about £19.99 to about £54.98. A post support is the wider set: a repair stake, a bolt-down shoe for a hard base, or a fitting that holds the end grain off a wet surface. Twelve supports run from about £7.97 to about £33.90. The word spike does not tell you which job is in the box.
