How to attach bamboo screening to a fence

Updated: October 2026

The roll arrives curled, the slats may have slid along the wire, and you have a Saturday to cover a fence that is yours. How to attach bamboo screening to a fence comes down to three limits: fix the joining wire, keep the foot off the soil, and stop if the posts move. The three amazon.co.uk rolls on the [bamboo fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/bamboo-fence) do not list fixings in the box. Peter F. noted those listings on 19 October 2026. This page is the order of work. It does not rank TradeXone, Abaseen or Wadan. If you have not chosen a height yet, choose the roll first, then come back with a sheet you are allowed to put on that fence.

Check the roll and the fence first

Unroll the sheet on a dry path before you commit to a cut. Shake or slide the slats until they sit level. EasyMerchant’s fitting guide makes that the first move, because slats travel inside the wire and arrive in a heap at one end. Measure height and length against the title while it is flat. Short measure shows up in the reviews, including about 5 cm on some TradeXone sheets and about 40 cm under 4 m on an Abaseen report. Then test the fence, not the roll. If the posts rock, a bamboo sheet will not brace them. Stop and call a fencer before any ties go in. None of the three listings includes staples. If you have not chosen a height yet, the checks are on the bamboo screening buying guide.

Fix the wire, not the cane

The cane is the part that splits. UK Garden Supplies tells you to staple or tie the joining wire, and never to staple through the cane. That warning matches a TradeXone review in which a slat shattered when a nail went through it. Put the fixing through the wire that already binds the slats. If you use screws, pre-drill. UK Bamboo says the culm cracks when a screw forces its own hole. On a firm wooden fence, UK Garden Supplies suggests fixings about every 100 mm along the roll and about every 500 mm up. On chain link, wire the rolls to the mesh. A wall needs plugs into the wire line, not a nail through a slat. If the slats walk out when you tug the bottom wire, add ties before you continue.

Spacing, the bottom edge and wind

Two supplier intervals are in print, and they are not the same rule. EasyMerchant says fix about every 50 cm, including the bottom, so wind cannot get behind the sheet. UK Garden Supplies is tighter along the length, at about 100 mm, and about every 500 mm vertically. Use the tighter pattern on an exposed garden. A sheet held only at the top corners becomes a sail. Keep the foot off the ground. UK Bamboo fits a gravel board so the cane is not sitting in soil. Overlap the joining wire of the next roll rather than butting two raw ends. If you can slide a hand behind the sheet halfway along the bay, the wind can too.

Cutting, and the point you hand over

Cut height or length with a fine saw or shears, which is what EasyMerchant suggests, and sand the cut if you will brush past it. Cut only after the sheet is measured and offered up. UK Bamboo is plain that oil does not guarantee against cracks. Do not treat a tin of oil as weatherproofing the listing never proved. No fence yet means posts, not a roll on its own. UK Garden Supplies describes 75 mm posts about every 2 m for a run with nothing to tie to. That is a supplier’s method, not a building regulation. Stop when the fence is not yours, when the posts already move, or when the roll would stand above the panel. The limits, which differ in Scotland, are on the bamboo screening privacy page. Common questions

What do you do if slats have slid in the box?
Unroll the sheet and shake or slide the slats back to an even line before you fix anything. One Abaseen reviewer could move slats to follow uneven ground, which is the same idea used on purpose. Do it on the path, not after the top wire is already stapled.
Can the roll sit on the soil?
It should not. Rest the bottom on a gravel board or an equivalent ledge so the cane stays out of the damp. A Wadan review said canes drop unless they rest on something. That ledge is also what stops the bottom wire bowing out in the wind.
How do you cut the height?
Offer the roll up, mark it, and cut with a fine saw or shears. Sand edges you will touch. Measure the delivered sheet first. Short rolls are already in the reviews, and a cut removes the unused length you might have needed at the other end.
What if there is no fence yet?
You need posts or a frame. UK Garden Supplies describes 75 mm posts at about 2 m centres for a run with no fence. That is supplier guidance, not a regulation. If the site is exposed or you have not set posts, a fencer should take the structural part before any roll is tied on.
When do you stop and hire a fencer?
Stop when posts move, when the fence is not yours, when you would raise the height past the limit for your nation, or when the building is listed. A bamboo roll will not stiffen a leaning bay. The three listings do not include staples or ties, so buy galvanised wire or exterior ties before the delivery. Fixing a sail to a weak post is how the next bay gets pulled as well.
