Bamboo screening privacy

Updated: October 2026

You want the neighbour’s windows gone, and the roll in the photo looks solid. Bamboo screening privacy, on the rolls we compared, is usually a partial screen with daylight between the slats. Standing that roll above the fence to gain height is a separate question, and it can cross a planning limit even when the cane itself is fine. The three amazon.co.uk listings on the [bamboo fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/bamboo-fence) are TradeXone, Abaseen and Wadan, noted by Peter F. on 19 October 2026. All three have see-through comments. This page is about gaps, a second layer, and the height rules in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It does not pick a brand, and it does not repeat the staple pattern.

What these rolls actually hide

A split bamboo roll covers the colour of an old panel more reliably than it covers a line of sight. Reviewers of TradeXone describe gaps larger than the photographs. Abaseen reviewers say the sheet is see-through unless it is doubled. Wadan reviewers call the gaps large and the picture deceptive on privacy. Woven Wood’s trade entry calls this kind of bamboo semi-permeable, so some light and air are part of the product. What the roll does well is break a casual view: bins, a balcony rail, the worst of a stained panel. What it does not do is a solid hoarding. Tie the joining wire, not the cane. The spacing is on the how to attach bamboo screening page. If you need the view gone rather than softened, budget a second layer before you call the first roll a failure.

A second layer, and what it costs you

Doubling is what buyers in this set actually did. It means two rolls for one 4 m run. At the captured prices, two Abaseen rolls are about £59.98, two Wadan rolls are about £49.98, and two TradeXone rolls are about £79.78. Offset the second sheet so the slats cover the gaps in the first. It will not become a fence panel, and a side view still sees the edges of the canes. Weed membrane behind the bamboo blocks more light and catches more wind. The cheaper roll doubled is a saving only if the roll measures as advertised. Wadan’s listing prints both 1.5 m by 4 m and 100 by 100 by 300 cm. Which single roll to buy first is on the best bamboo screening page.

Height if you build the screen up

A roll fixed to the face of the fence, which does not rise above the panel, does not increase the height of the fence. A roll stood above the panel can. The limits are not one UK rule. In England, the General Permitted Development Order 2015, Class A, and the Planning Portal summary, allow up to 1 metre beside a highway used by vehicles, and up to 2 metres elsewhere. Wales uses the same 1 metre and 2 metre shape. Northern Ireland’s 2015 Order is 1 metre by a vehicular road and 2 metres elsewhere. Scotland is Class 3E on mygov.scot: 2 metres, but 1 metre if the fence fronts a road or passes the house wall nearest a road. That class does not apply in a conservation area or a listed curtilage. Measure from the ground the fence stands on. Adding the roll on top counts.

Neighbours, balconies and when to ask the council

Ownership of the fence is a civil question, not a planning permission you can assume. If the fence is not yours, do not staple a roll to it and call it maintenance. A lower garden next door does not move the tape. You still measure from the ground the fence stands on, which is the approach Cornwall Council describes. Flats and maisonettes do not sit in the same householder class as a detached house. A balcony screen is a question for the council and, usually, the freeholder. A Scottish conservation area is outside Class 3E entirely. The order of buying checks is on the bamboo screening buying guide. Common questions

Can you stand bamboo above the fence to gain height?
Only if the finished height still fits the limit for your nation, or you have permission. A roll on the face that stays below the top of the panel is not an increase. A fringe above the panel is. An existing fence that is already over the limit must not be made taller under the English class.
What is the limit beside a road?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the sources put it at 1 metre beside a vehicular highway, and 2 metres elsewhere. Scotland’s Class 3E is 1 metre if the fence fronts a road or passes the house wall nearest a road, and 2 metres otherwise. A pavement beside a road used by vehicles is part of that highways case on the Planning Portal summary. Check the wording for your nation before you build the screen up.
Does Scotland treat a conservation area differently?
Yes. Class 3E does not apply in a conservation area or in the curtilage of a listed building. The 1 metre and 2 metre class is not your fallback there. You need the council’s position before you rely on permitted development. Listed buildings need extra care in the other nations as well.
Who measures the height if the neighbour’s garden is lower?
Measure from the ground the fence stands on, which is the approach Cornwall Council describes. You do not take the height from the lower garden and call the fence shorter. A roll added above the panel is included. Ownership of the fence is a separate civil argument.
Do flats and balconies use the householder limits?
No. Those 1 metre and 2 metre figures are the householder classes in the sources above. A flat, a maisonette or a balcony on a block is outside that shortcut. Ask the council and the freeholder before you fix a roll where it changes the outside of the building.
