Willow privacy screening for bins and railings

Updated: October 2026

The bins sit in the sightline, the railings look bare, or a panel is still standing and only looks tired. Willow privacy screening is the woven roll you fix to a support you already have. Privacy on a listing does not make the weave solid, and the roll does not stand on its own. Products Compared checked the amazon.co.uk listings on 15 October 2026, with no lab test of wind or balcony fixings. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission. If you are still choosing a roll against a hurdle, start with the [wattle fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/wattle-fence).

A roll covers a sound fence, it does not replace one

A screening roll needs a wall, a fence or a frame. UK makers treat hurdles as the freestanding fence and the roll as the cover you attach. A panel that is still firm in the posts and rails can take that cover. If a post is soft at the ground, or a rail has already split, the roll fails with the fence and you pay twice. A tie that a sound rail can bear will pull a rotten one apart. Chain-link belongs here only if the frame holds. Posts and ties sit on the guide to installing a wattle fence.

Bins, railings and a seating corner

Sellers offer this roll to hide bins, cover railings, or screen a seat. Tape the bin and the run, because these listings do not measure a UK wheelie bin. David Musson lists 4 metre rolls from about £41.65 to £83.20 including VAT, which is not an amazon.co.uk price. Abaseen, about £49.99, is the top pick where both size lines say 1.5 metres by 4 metres, though one review describes 3 metres by 1 metre. The Wadan 1.5 metre title, about £46.99, is the best value if you measure first. Its specification says 3 metres by 1 metre. Prime Plus includes no fixings and makes no removable claim.

Balconies and rented homes

Abaseen is the only listing here that names a porch, a patio or a garden railing, and the only one that says the screen can be removed without damage. That line is the seller’s wording, not a test, and the listing gives no weight. The other rolls make no balcony claim. No listing states a load, a wind figure, or that a tenancy allows the screen. If the structure holds soil, or the balcony is not yours to drill, stop and ask a professional, and the landlord if you rent. Read the lease before you buy.

Privacy is mostly height, and height has a planning edge

Height hides more than species. Hurdle makers say 4 feet softens a view and 5 or 6 feet stops one, and those figures are for hurdles, not these rolls. A 1.5 metre roll sits nearer the softer height, and light still shows through the canes. Strapping the roll above a short fence can cross a planning limit. In England the usual maximum is 1 metre next to a highway used by vehicles and 2 metres elsewhere. The wattle fence buying guide holds the nation rules. Do not staple a neighbour’s fence unless the deed shows it is yours.

Cover the view you already have a support for

If the posts and rails are still firm, a roll can hide bins, a railing or a tired panel, and you supply the ties. If Abaseen’s removable line is the reason you are buying, treat it as seller wording with no weight and no tested balcony fixing. If the fence is rotten, the balcony is not yours, or the extra height would cross the planning limit, stop.

Common questions

Will a willow roll hide wheelie bins?
It can hide the part of the bin the roll covers, when the support is sound and the height matches the view you dislike. These listings do not measure a UK wheelie bin. Abaseen is about £49.99 as 1.5 metres by 4 metres, and a review describes 3 metres by 1 metre. Measure the roll before you plan around the title.
Can I fix willow screening to railings or a tired fence panel?
You can, when the railing or panel is sound and you supply the fixing. Sellers offer rolls for existing fences, walls and railings. A tired panel is in scope if the posts and rails still hold. A failing panel is not, because the roll comes down with it. Prime Plus includes no fixings, so bring ties or wire once that support is fit.
Is willow screening safe on a balcony?
We cannot say that it is. Abaseen mentions a porch, patio or garden railing and says the screen can be removed without damage. That is seller wording, with no weight and no tested fixing. No listing states a wind load or that a tenancy allows the screen. If the balcony is not yours, or if it carries soil, ask a professional and your landlord first.
Will 1.5 metres of willow screening give me privacy?
It covers more than a 1 metre roll and less than a 1.8 metre or 2 metre roll, and it is still a weave, not a closeboard fence. Hurdle makers treat about 4 feet as softening a view and 5 or 6 feet as stopping one. A 1.5 metre roll sits nearer the first, so measure before you rely on the title.
Can I raise a short fence by strapping a roll above it?
You can strap a roll higher. In England the finished fence can then exceed 1 metre beside a road used by vehicles, or 2 metres elsewhere, which is outside the usual permitted development limit. A product line is not permission.
