Gabion retaining wall

Updated: October 2026

You want the cage to hold a bank, lift a patio, or sit on the boundary, and the amazon title already says retaining wall. A gabion retaining wall is an engineering job when it holds soil or changes levels, and the English 2 metre figure for a garden enclosure is not a permit for that. The [Gabions comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/gabions) prices empty cages whose bullets use the words. Peter F. used those listings and the Planning Portal. There is no design in this set. What to read on the listing is on the [gabion baskets buying guide](/hub/fencing-and-wire/gabions/sub/gabions-buying-guide). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When a gabion is only a fence, and when it is engineering

In England, the Planning Portal treats a fence, wall or gate that is only a means of enclosure as within permitted development at 1 metre next to a highway used by vehicles, including the footpath beside it, or 2 metres elsewhere. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own orders. The numbers are about enclosure, not a rule that any gabion under 2 metres is lawful. On 22 May 2018 an inspector treated backfilled flood-defence gabions as engineering, not as a means of enclosure, and upheld enforcement. If your cages will be backfilled with soil, ask the local planning authority. A 30 cm edge with no soil load can still be a garden feature. The moment soil leans on it, you have left the enclosure page.

Neighbours, party walls, and building regulations

Planning permission and neighbour notice are not one form. The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 covers England and Wales, not Scotland. A new wall on the boundary needs a section 1 notice. Excavation within 3 metres that goes below a neighbour’s foundations needs a section 6 notice, and there is a further case out to 6 metres on a 45-degree line. Serve the notice. The Planning Portal says fences, walls and gates do not need building-regulation approval, and they must still be structurally sound. One planter on your own patio, clear of the boundary and with no excavation, is outside that notice. It is still not a retaining design.

Base, geotextile and a drain

A designed gabion wall sits on a prepared base, not on lawn. A Find a Tender gabion item names an engineer, a Type 1 pad, a geotextile and angular stone of about 100–200 mm. That is a contract, not a weekend sketch. Wire Fence and Gabion Baskets Ltd show drawings and then say the drawings are not an engineer. A geotextile against the soil, and a drain, stop the cage becoming a dam. A patio full of people is part of the load. Devoran, pointing at BS 8002, puts the design mass in the stone. BS 8002:2015 is the code TRL cites. The stone still has to be larger than the hole, which is the point of how to fill gabion baskets.

Who should design it, and which cages to leave

There is no single UK DIY height. Wire Fence’s split is about 1.5 m on flat ground with little water and no heavy load. Devoran talks about an engineer above about 3 m. Do not average those figures. A slope, soft ground or a loaded patio is already the stop. Stacking three Garvee cages at about £26.99 makes a metre of mesh only on a sketch. Relaxdays states 4 mm and no drain. Nordswal’s UK reviews describe low edges, not a design. For soil, ask the planning authority and appoint someone who will sign the height, the base and the drainage. Mesh type does not change that stop: see welded vs woven gabion.

Common questions

Do you need planning permission in England for a gabion wall?
You might, and the height alone does not answer it. A fence or wall that is only a means of enclosure can stay within 1 metre by a highway used by vehicles, or 2 metres elsewhere, with listed-building and Article 4 exceptions, on the Planning Portal. A gabion that holds soil or was built as flood defence can be engineering. A 2018 appeal upheld enforcement on backfilled flood-defence gabions. Ask the authority if soil is retained.
Does the 2 metre rule cover a wall that holds soil?
No. The 2 metre figure on the Planning Portal is for a means of enclosure, not for a retaining structure. Backfilled gabions have been treated as an engineering operation. Herefordshire has also said that changing an existing wall to gabions can need permission. A low stone edge with no soil load is a different proposal from a bank.
When does the Party Wall Act matter?
In England and Wales, not in Scotland. You need a section 1 notice for a new wall on the line of junction, and a section 6 notice for excavation within 3 metres that goes below a neighbour’s foundations, plus the 6 metre case on a 45-degree line. Planning permission does not replace that notice. A planter clear of the boundary, with no excavation, is outside that description.
How tall can you go before you call an engineer?
There is no single UK DIY height. Wire Fence distinguishes about 1.5 m on flat ground with little water and no heavy load from taller, sloping or loaded sites. Devoran talks about an engineer above about 3 m. A slope, a patio full of people, or soft ground is a reason to stop below both figures. The amazon cages here do not state a design height.
Is a 30 cm amazon cage a retaining wall if you stack three?
Stacking three 30 cm cages makes a tall mesh only if they arrive and you tie them. It does not make a retaining design. The Garvee cage at about £26.99 does not state a wire, a mesh hole or a review score. Soil behind that stack is the engineering case, whatever the title says. Scotland is outside the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 and has its own planning order.
