Gabions comparison 2026

The best Gabions, compared.

Top pick: Monster Shop gabion cages Best value: Relaxdays gabion wall – About £33.90, the lowest stored price among cages that state a wire diameter, and it is not also the top score. Updated October 2026.

A gabion on amazon.co.uk is an empty wire cage you fill with stone. The stone is a separate purchase, and it is usually the heavier part of the job. UK shoppers buy these cages for a low garden edge, a planter, a seat-height block or a retaining wall. Quality starts with a stated wire diameter, a stated mesh hole, braces in the box, and a coating you can name. If the basket must hold soil or stand beside a neighbour's foundations, the listing is not the design. The [gabion buying guide](/hub/fencing-and-wire/gabions/sub/gabions-buying-guide) covers job, wire, mesh, coating and braces before price.

The best Gabions in detail

Monster Shop gabion cages

Rank 1

Monster Shop gabion cages

∼£95

Our view

The Monster Shop listing is priced at about £94.99, and the title says a 2-pack of galvanised cages at 100 × 95 × 30 cm. The piece count also says 2, while a bullet says 4 baskets, 120 connectors, 16 strengthening hooks and gloves. The title says galvanised steel and the material line says stainless steel, and the page does not settle either conflict. Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated. The score is 5.0 from 4 reviews, and two UK texts call the cages sturdy and easy to assemble with spirals, with one buyer ordering a second set after filling the first with stone to make a wall. Those two texts do not record a defect, and they do not say which pack size arrived. The unit count is printed as 2.0 square metres, which does not by itself describe two cages of this size. Treat the parcel, not the longer bullet, as the count you paid for.

Pros

  • Title size 100 × 95 × 30 cm at about £94.99
  • Two UK reviews call assembly easy and the cages sturdy
  • One of those buyers ordered a second set after filling with stone
  • A bullet claims strengthening hooks and gloves

Cons

  • The title and the piece count say 2, and a bullet says 4 baskets
  • Galvanised in the title, stainless steel on the material line
  • Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated
  • The review texts do not say which pack size arrived

Best for: A wall or planter only after you have checked the delivered piece count and the metal against the title.

Less suitable: A shortlist that needs a stated wire diameter, or a buy you cannot open and count before you commit the stone.

Common questions

Is this Monster Shop listing a two-pack or a four-pack?

The title and the piece count say 2, at 100 × 95 × 30 cm. A bullet says 4 baskets, plus 120 connectors, 16 hooks and gloves. Those figures conflict.

Does the listing say galvanised or stainless?

The title says galvanised steel. The material line says stainless steel. The listing does not resolve that, and it does not state a wire diameter.

What did the UK reviews report?

The score is 5.0 from 4. Two UK texts call the cages sturdy and easy to assemble, and one buyer ordered a second set. Neither of those texts records a defect.

Relaxdays gabion wall

Rank 2

Relaxdays gabion wall

∼£34

Our view

The Relaxdays cage is one hot-dip galvanised basket listed at about 30 × 100 × 30 cm, with a 4 mm wire highlight, at about £33.90. That 4 mm figure is the only stated wire diameter in this set that is not sitting beside a contradictory size line. The box is one basket, spiral connectors and spacer hooks, with quantities that vary by size, and stones are not included. The mesh hole is not printed, so the wire figure still does not tell you which stone will stay inside. The amazon.co.uk score is 5.0 from 2 reviews, and both texts were written in Italy and Germany and are only a few words, so they do not describe a UK winter or a filled face. The material line says alloy steel while the bullets say hot-dip galvanised steel. The bullets ask about stone size, stacking and slopes and do not answer them. At 30 cm high this is a low screen or edge, and a slope is a different job. It is the best value because it is the lowest stored price among cages that state a wire diameter, not because the reviews are a UK sample.

Pros

  • 4 mm wire stated, the only diameter in this set without a size clash
  • Hot-dip galvanising claimed, at about £33.90
  • Spacer hooks and spiral connectors listed, with stones excluded
  • About 30 × 100 × 30 cm, which suits a low edge

Cons

  • Mesh hole is not stated
  • The two reviews are from Italy and Germany, and both are very short
  • The material line says alloy steel
  • Stone size, stack height and slopes are asked and not answered

Best for: A single low privacy screen or garden edge, if you measure the hole yourself before you buy stone.

Less suitable: A buy that needs UK review evidence, a stated mesh, or a cage that holds soil on a slope.

Common questions

What wire diameter does this Relaxdays listing state?

The item highlight says 4 mm galvanised wire, at about 30 × 100 × 30 cm. The mesh hole size is not stated.

Are stones in the box?

No. The included-components line lists one basket, spiral connectors and spacer hooks, and it says no stones. Connector quantity varies by size.

Where were the two reviews written?

The listing score is 5.0 from 2. The texts were written in Italy and Germany, not the United Kingdom, and both are very short.

Nordswal six gabion cages

Rank 3

Nordswal six gabion cages

∼£169

Our view

The Nordswal pack is six galvanised cages, each listed at 100 × 50 × 30 cm, at about £169.00 on amazon.co.uk, and the listing shows 4.7 from 10 reviews. Seven UK texts describe the mesh as solid once the cages are filled, and reviewers use them as a hedge stand-in, a low edge or a seat-height block. Assembly is with spiral connectors, and the bullets claim top and bottom covers, though the included-components line only says galvanised and does not count the spirals. Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated, so you cannot match a stone size from the page. Reviewers say the spiral ends are sharp and that you want gloves, and one of the six cages arrived damaged on one side, which that reviewer put down to the factory. The cages fold flat before you build them, and one reviewer cut a cage down with heavy-duty wire cutters. Level ground matters, because the cages and the internal hooks have to line up. A title that mentions a retaining wall does not state a design, a coating weight or a life in years. It is the top pick because the score is the highest in this set, not because the wire is known.

Pros

  • Six cages at 100 × 50 × 30 cm for about £169.00
  • UK reviewers call the mesh solid once it is filled
  • Spiral connectors, with top and bottom covers claimed
  • Folds flat, and one reviewer cut a cage to a custom size

Cons

  • Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated
  • Spiral ends are sharp, and reviewers recommend gloves
  • One of the six cages arrived damaged on one side
  • Galvanised is stated without a coating weight or a life in years

Best for: A matching run of low edges or seat-height blocks on level ground, once you buy the stone and accept an unstated mesh hole.

Less suitable: A wall that holds soil, or any job where you need a stated wire diameter before you order the stone.

Common questions

Are stones included with these Nordswal cages?

No. The listing is six galvanised cages, each 100 × 50 × 30 cm. Stones are not in the included-components line.

How does the listing say the panels join?

The bullets say the mesh panels connect with spiral fixings, and that top and bottom covers help keep the fill in place. A wire diameter is not stated.

What do the UK reviews say about the wire?

The listing score is 4.7 from 10. Reviewers call the cages strong once filled. They also say the spiral ends are sharp, and that one of the six arrived damaged on one side.

Gawany hexagonal gabion planter

Rank 4

Gawany hexagonal gabion planter

∼£69

Our view

The Gawany planter is one hexagonal cage at about £68.60, listed as 100 × 90 × 50 cm outside and 80 × 70 × 50 cm inside. The bullets say galvanised steel and welded cross and longitudinal wires, and the finish line says powder coated. Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated. A capacity line prints both 1400 kg/m³ and 1400 kilograms, which are not the same claim, and neither figure is a test of this cage. The listing tells you the wires are pointed and that you should wear gloves and safety shoes. A liner is asked about and not confirmed, while drainage is marked yes. The score is 4.0 from 2 UK reviews: one called the wire flimsy, said it twisted under the weight and added their own wire, and the other found it fiddly and planned to use it as a frame or a planter. The hexagonal outline is the basket shape, not a statement that the mesh is woven double-twist.

Pros

  • Outside 100 × 90 × 50 cm and inside 80 × 70 × 50 cm stated
  • Hexagonal raised-bed shape at about £68.60
  • Welded joints claimed, and drainage marked yes
  • The safety line tells you to wear gloves and safety shoes

Cons

  • Both UK reviews found it fiddly, and one called the wire flimsy and added wire
  • Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated
  • A liner is not confirmed
  • Capacity is printed as 1400 kg/m³ and as 1400 kilograms

Best for: A decorative hexagonal planter frame, if you can stiffen a light wire or you are content with a fiddly build.

Less suitable: A stone wall, a seat, or a fill order that needs the mesh hole before the stone arrives.

Common questions

What outside size does this Gawany planter state?

The bullets say 100 × 90 × 50 cm outside and 80 × 70 × 50 cm inside. The shape line says hexagonal. Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated.

Does the listing include a liner?

The bullets ask whether a liner is included and do not answer. A details line says it has drainage and is for outdoor use. The safety lines say the wires are sharp and tell you to wear gloves and safety shoes.

What did the two UK reviews say?

The score is 4.0 from 2. One reviewer called the wire flimsy and said it twisted, so they added their own wire. The other found it fiddly and planned to use it as a frame or a planter.

Garvee gabion cage 100 × 30 × 30 cm

Rank 5

Garvee gabion cage 100 × 30 × 30 cm

∼£27

Our view

The smaller Garvee cage is one unit at about £26.99, the lowest price in this set, with a highlight of 100 × 30 × 30 cm and a listed weight of 6.79 kg. The length and width line says 100 cm by 30 cm. The bullets say hot-dipped galvanised steel in the text and iron on the material line, with tool-free spiral rods and bracing spacers, and no stones. Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated, and there is no review line. The bullets ask about stone size, ease of assembly and long-term durability, and they do not give a coating weight or a life in years. A 30 cm cage is a low edge or a planter lip on flat ground. Stacking three of them into a metre of bank is not a design the listing has supplied. The lower price does not make it the best value, because the wire diameter is blank.

Pros

  • Lowest price in the set, at about £26.99
  • Highlight 100 × 30 × 30 cm, listed at 6.79 kg
  • Spirals and bracing spacers described
  • Stones and plants stated as not included

Cons

  • No review line
  • Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated
  • The material line says iron against a galvanised bullet
  • Durability is asked on the listing and not answered

Best for: A low 30 cm edge or planter border on flat ground, after you measure the mesh yourself.

Less suitable: A seat or a soil bank, because the wire is unstated and nobody on amazon.co.uk has reviewed this size.

Common questions

What size does this smaller Garvee listing print?

The highlight says 100 × 30 × 30 cm. Item weight is 6.79 kg. Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated.

The listing has no customer-review line, so the rating is not available.

Garvee gabion cage 100 × 50 × 50 cm

Rank 6

Garvee gabion cage 100 × 50 × 50 cm

∼£39

Our view

The larger Garvee cage is one unit at about £38.99, with a highlight size of 100 × 50 × 50 cm and an item weight of 11 kg. The length and width line says 100 cm by 50 cm, so the 50 cm height sits in the highlight and the colour field rather than on that line. The bullets say hot-dipped galvanised steel and the material line says iron. Wire diameter is not stated, and the mesh is called an ideal aperture without a measurement. Spirals and bracing spacers are described, the quantities are not, and stones and plants are not included. There is no customer-review line. The bullets name pebbles, cobbles, angular limestone or slate and claim you can stack or link units, without a tested load. A single 50 cm cage is a planter border or a low block, and a stack is a different structure.

Pros

  • Highlight size 100 × 50 × 50 cm at about £38.99
  • Hot-dip galvanising claimed in the bullets
  • Spirals and bracing spacers described
  • Stones and plants stated as not included

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk review line
  • Wire diameter and mesh hole are not stated
  • The material line says iron
  • Connector quantities are not stated

Best for: A single 50 cm planter border or low block, once you have measured the hole and bought the stone.

Less suitable: A stacked wall that holds soil, or a purchase that depends on reviews or a printed wire diameter.

BOWEKAM gabion basket

Rank 7

BOWEKAM gabion basket

∼£92

Our view

The BOWEKAM basket bullets say one galvanised cage, 120 × 30 × 50 cm assembled, mesh 10 × 5 cm and wire 3.5 mm, at about £91.93. The item-dimensions line says 30 × 30 × 30 mm and the weight says 2.5 kg, which cannot describe that bullet size, and the listing does not resolve it. There is no review line, and connectors, braces and stones are not listed. If the bullet mesh is what arrives, stone has to be larger than a 10 × 5 cm hole or it will fall through. The colour field says Picture, which is not a finish. At about £91.93 you are paying a mid-range price for a size the page contradicts. Until a delivered cage matches 120 × 30 × 50 cm, the 3.5 mm wire and the 10 × 5 cm mesh are claims sitting beside a millimetre line. This is not a shortlist buy while those two sizes remain on the same listing, and the stated wire does not make it the best value.

Pros

  • Bullets state 3.5 mm wire and a 10 × 5 cm mesh
  • Bullet size 120 × 30 × 50 cm in galvanised steel
  • The mesh hole is one of the few printed in this set

Cons

  • The details line says 30 × 30 × 30 mm and 2.5 kg
  • No review line
  • Braces, connectors and stones are not listed
  • The two size lines are unresolved

Best for: Only after a delivered cage matches 120 × 30 × 50 cm and you can see the 10 × 5 cm hole.

Less suitable: An about £91.93 shortlist buy while the dimension line still says 30 mm.

Common questions

What size, mesh and wire do the bullets state?

The bullets say 120 × 30 × 50 cm assembled, mesh 10 × 5 cm, wire 3.5 mm, galvanised steel.

Why is there a second size on the listing?

The item-dimensions line says 30 × 30 × 30 mm and the weight says 2.5 kg. That conflicts with the bullet size. The listing does not resolve it.

Is there an Amazon review score?

The listing has no customer-review line, so the rating is not available. Assembly parts and stones are not listed.

BOWEKAM three gabion columns

Rank 8

BOWEKAM three gabion columns

∼£280

Our view

The BOWEKAM three-pack is priced at about £280.43, and the bullets say three galvanised columns of 25 × 25 × 197 cm, mesh 12.5 × 5.5 cm and wire 3.5 mm. The product-dimensions line says 3 × 3 × 3 cm and 2.5 kg, and a power-source line says dc, which does not belong on a passive steel column. The listing was first available on 6 October 2026 and has no review line. Connectors and stones are not stated. A 197 cm column on a 25 cm square is a tall pier, not a wide base for holding soil, and a 12.5 × 5.5 cm hole would need large stone if that mesh is real. The title opens with Furniture, which adds no specification. At this price the conflicting lines are the thing you would be paying for. Leave it until a delivered column matches 25 × 25 × 197 cm and you have a fixing plan for a pier nearly 2 m tall.

Pros

  • Bullets state three columns, 3.5 mm wire and 12.5 × 5.5 cm mesh
  • Bullet height 197 cm, if that line is the one that arrives
  • Galvanised steel is named in the bullets

Cons

  • The details line says 3 × 3 × 3 cm and 2.5 kg
  • A power-source line says dc
  • No reviews, and connectors are not listed
  • About £280.43 for a size the listing contradicts

Best for: A tall pier only after the delivered columns match 25 × 25 × 197 cm and you already know how you will fix them.

Less suitable: A garden wall, a retaining base, or any order placed from the bullet size alone.

Common questions

What does this BOWEKAM title include?

Three galvanised baskets. The bullets say 25 × 25 × 197 cm, mesh 12.5 × 5.5 cm and wire 3.5 mm.

What else is printed on the details line?

The product-dimensions line says 3 × 3 × 3 cm and 2.5 kg, and a power-source line says dc. Those lines conflict with a passive steel column. The listing does not resolve them.

The listing has no customer-review line, so the rating is not available.

How we compared

Eight amazon.co.uk listings were scored from the shelf prices stored on 19 October 2026. Stars and review counts are those UK listing figures. A wire diameter, a mesh hole and a coating are the seller's claim. Where the title and another line disagree, both are kept and the conflict is a deduction. Italian and German review text is not treated as a UK sample. A missing review line scores as no Amazon evidence, not as a hidden five-star rating. This is not a laboratory test. The four weights below sum to 100. The highest score is the top pick. Best value is the lowest stored price among cages that state a wire diameter, and it does not also take the top score.

1

Amazon evidence

25%

Star rating on amazon.co.uk, then whether the texts belong to that ASIN and were written in the UK. Nordswal's 4.7 from 10, with seven UK texts, takes the most of this block. A 5.0 from two short Italian and German texts takes little. A missing review line is no Amazon evidence.

2

Spec fit

35%

A stated wire diameter, a stated mesh hole, a coating you can name, braces or covers, and external dimensions that agree. A second size line that contradicts the bullets loses most of this block. No listing here is treated as BS EN 10223-8 or as Galfan.

3

Review outcome

20%

UK comments that describe a cage that stayed sound once filled score higher. Sharp spiral ends, a damaged cage in the pack, and wire that twisted under the fill are deductions. Two short foreign texts cannot fill this block, and nor can a missing review line.

4

Value

20%

Stored GBP price against a job you can read from the listing. Relaxdays at about £33.90 is the only cage with a stated 4 mm wire, so it takes more of this block than the cheaper Garvee at about £26.99, whose wire is blank.

Gabions buying guide

The choice is the job, then a printed wire diameter, then a mesh hole you can match to stone. A low planter on flat ground, a run of matching cages, and a wall that holds soil are different buys. Galvanised is a seller's word until a coating weight, or a review of a filled face, says more. Stones are a second purchase.

What is a gabion?

A gabion on amazon.co.uk is an empty wire cage you fill with stone. The stone is a separate purchase, and it is usually the heavier part of the job. UK shoppers buy these cages for a low garden edge, a planter, a seat-height block or, more ambitiously, a retaining wall. Quality starts with a stated wire diameter, a stated mesh hole, braces in the box, and a coating you can name, not with a star rating. This comparison keeps eight empty cages.

Best for

  • A low stone edge or planter you can hand-fill on level ground
  • A short run of matching cages that does not hold soil
  • A hexagonal planter frame, if you can accept a fiddly build

Not ideal for

  • A wall that retains soil, changes levels, or stands on a boundary
  • Anyone treating galvanised as a life in years, or an unstated mesh as a stone order

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Ordering stone before you know the hole

Stone must be larger than the mesh. Nordswal, Relaxdays, Monster Shop, both Garvee cages and Gawany do not state the hole. An unstated mesh means you cannot choose stone from the page.

  2. 2

Treating galvanised as a life in years

Galvanised without a coating weight is not a decade count. Galfan decades belong only to products that state them. None of these listings is treated as Galfan, and none is treated as rust-proof.

  3. 3

Stacking an unstated-wire cage into a bank

A planter on flat ground is not a wall that holds soil. If the cage retains soil, changes levels, or stands beside a neighbour's foundations, the listing is not the design. Budget the stone as well as the cage.

What to weigh up

Wire, mesh and coating

High

Wire diameter has to be printed in millimetres. UK gabion suppliers treat about 3 mm as a light welded wall wire and 4 mm as the step up when the face must stay straight or people will sit on it. Their height cut-offs differ, about 3 m versus about 5 m, and that is supplier practice, not a test of these cages. If the diameter is missing, do not assume 4 mm. Relaxdays states 4 mm at about £33.90, which is why it is the best value.

Job, braces and listing conflicts

High

A planter on flat ground is a different object from a wall that retains soil. If the basket must hold soil, change levels, or stand beside a neighbour's foundations, the listing is not the design. The stone, not the mesh, is the mass that does that work. Braces should be in the box. Nordswal claims covers, and the included-components line does not count the spirals. Relaxdays lists spacer hooks. Monster Shop's bullet claims 16 hooks beside a pack count that says both 2 and 4.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A low edge or screen

You want one cage on level ground, about 30 cm high, and you want a wire diameter printed before you order stone. Relaxdays states 4 mm and hot-dip galvanising, at about £33.90, about 30 × 100 × 30 cm, score 53. The mesh hole is not stated, so measure it. The 5.0 from 2 is two short reviews from Italy and Germany, not a UK winter.

A matching run of cages

You are replacing a short run of hedge or edging with several cages, still without a soil load. The Nordswal pack is six cages of 100 × 50 × 30 cm at about £169.00, score 64, with 4.7 from 10 reviews and seven UK texts. Wire and mesh are not stated. Reviewers report sharp spirals and one damaged cage.

A hexagonal planter frame

You want the outline of a raised planter, not a wall. Gawany is one hexagonal cage at about £68.60, 100 × 90 × 50 cm outside and 80 × 70 × 50 cm inside, score 42, with 4.0 from 2 UK reviews. One reviewer called the wire flimsy and added their own wire. The hexagonal outline is the basket shape, not a statement that the mesh is woven.

The top pick is the Nordswal pack of six galvanised cages, each 100 × 50 × 30 cm, at about £169.00, score 64. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.7 from 10 reviews, and seven texts are from the UK. Reviewers call the mesh solid once filled, and report sharp spirals and one damaged cage. Wire and mesh are not stated, so you cannot match a stone from the page. A retaining-wall title is not a design. This is not a laboratory test.
What do gabion cages cost?
Empty cages here run from about £26.99 to about £280.43. Garvee is about £26.99 and about £38.99, and Relaxdays is about £33.90. Gawany is about £68.60, the BOWEKAM basket about £91.93, and Monster Shop about £94.99. Nordswal is about £169.00 and the BOWEKAM columns about £280.43. The best value is Relaxdays, because it states 4 mm wire. The cheaper Garvee does not. Stone is extra.
What should you check before you buy a gabion?
Start with the job. A planter on flat ground is not a wall that retains soil. Read the wire diameter in millimetres. If it is missing, do not assume 4 mm. Stone must be larger than the hole, and a blank hole means you cannot choose stone from the page. Galvanised without a coating weight is not a life in years. Check that braces are listed, and that the pack size and the dimensions do not contradict the title.
Do you need planning permission for a gabion wall?
In England, Planning Portal guidance says a wall that is only a means of enclosure stays within 1 metre next to a highway used by vehicles, including the footway, or 2 metres elsewhere. A listed site, an Article 4 direction, a planning condition, or raising an already taller wall can change that. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own orders. A gabion that holds soil can be an engineering operation. Under 2 metres is not, by itself, permission.
Are stones included with these gabion cages?
No. These eight listings are empty cages. Nordswal, Relaxdays, Monster Shop, both Garvee cages and Gawany say stones are not included, and the BOWEKAM listings do not list stones either. Stone has to be larger than the mesh hole, which most of these pages do not print. The fill is usually the heavier part of the job. For stone sold on its own, see the gabion stones comparison.
Is a welded gabion the same as woven mesh?
No. Welded square or rectangular mesh, joined with spirals or rings, is the stiff garden cage. Woven double-twist hexagonal mesh is the flexible civil cage, for ground that moves and for hydraulic work. BS EN 10223-8:2013 is the welded standard, and BS EN 10223-3:2013 is the hexagonal civil standard. None of these eight listings is treated as meeting either one. A hexagonal planter can mean the basket outline, not the mesh.
When should you stop and call a professional?
Call a professional when the cage retains soil or changes levels, or when you excavate near a neighbour's foundations or build on the boundary. In England and Wales the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 is separate from planning. Scotland is outside that Act. Also stop when wire, mesh and coating are unstated on anything taller than a planter, or the ground is soft or sloping. HSE asks you to reduce lifting risk. It is not a kilogram limit. Wear gloves.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Nordswal six-pack, score 64, at about £169.00, with 4.7 from 10 reviews and seven UK texts. Reviewers call the cages strong once filled. They also report sharp spirals and one damaged cage. Wire and mesh are not stated. The best value is the Relaxdays cage, score 53, at about £33.90, because it is the lowest stored price among cages that state a wire diameter, and it does not also take the top score. The 4 mm figure is stated and the mesh is not. The 5.0 from 2 is two short texts from Italy and Germany. Garvee at about £26.99 is cheaper, and its wire is blank, so it does not take the value award. The BOWEKAM listings state 3.5 mm, then contradict the size, so they do not take it either.
