Framed willow fence panels: hurdle, frame or roll

A timber-framed willow panel standing between posts in a UK garden

Framed willow panels, ribbon hurdles and rolls are three products. A timber frame does not turn a roll into a fence, and the weave is not animal-proof.

The search result says willow fence, and three different objects are in the pictures: a panel with a timber rectangle around the weave, a looser ribbon hurdle, and a roll tied to someone else's gravel board. Framed willow fence panels are only the first of those. The frame does not turn a screening roll into a fence, and a traditional weave is not animal-proof.

Products Compared used Musgrove Willows' framed, trellis and made-to-measure pages, Hazel Hurdle World's unframed prices, and the rolls in our wattle comparison. We did not order a bespoke panel. In short

Musgrove's standard framed panels are 6 ft wide and 2 to 6 ft high, priced from £66.60 to £129.00 on the page opened, plus £15 delivery to most UK mainland addresses, made to order in about 6 to 7 weeks. Ribbon hurdles are the rustic version and still need posts. Unframed Hazel Hurdle World panels were £28.99 to £54.16. The amazon.co.uk products in the wattle comparison are rolls, not frames. A trellis counts in the height. Bespoke panels are non-returnable.

Three products, not one fence

Keep the names separate or the price will lie to you. A framed panel is willow woven into a timber edge and fixed to posts. A ribbon or unframed hurdle is the weave without that rectangle, and it is the boundary if you are building a new line. A screening roll is canes on wire, and it only works on a fence, railing or frame that is already sound. Hazel Hurdle World states that split on its garden screening page.

The frame makes the panel look like a softwood fence bay. It does not make it one under BS 1722-11, and it does not give the roll in your Amazon basket a frame. See what BS 1722-11 covers and willow screening roll or a fence panel. Musgrove attaches framed and ribbon panels to wooden or concrete posts. The frame is not a post, and a run still needs a post at each end. Gaps in the weave remain, so the timber is not animal-proof. See will a wattle fence stop rabbits.

What Musgrove's framed panels are

On Musgrove Willows' framed willow page, the price range shown was £66.60 through £129.00. The standard width is 6 ft, stated as 1.83 metres. Heights are 2 ft (0.61 m), 3 ft (0.91 m), 4 ft (1.22 m), 5 ft (1.52 m) and 6 ft (1.83 m). Panels are made to order. Delivery is £15 to most UK mainland addresses, and the estimate is 6 to 7 weeks, sooner if that size is already in stock. Measurements are approximate. Colour and weave can vary. Warping from moisture can be eased by laying the panel flat for a few days to dry.

That £66.60 already sits above Hazel Hurdle World's £54.16 for an unframed 6 ft by 6 ft hurdle on 15 October 2026. You are paying for a different construction and a different seller, not a longer roll. Posts and labour sit outside both prices. Four panels at the bottom of Musgrove's range are £266.40 before the £15 delivery and before posts. If the height you want is at the top of the range, £66.60 is not the sum.

Buy the frame for a regular edge in a formal garden. If you need a cover tied to a bin store this week, 6 to 7 weeks and a new post line are the wrong timetable. Musgrove is in Somerset and weaves willow it grows. That is their account of origin. Abaseen's amazon.co.uk listing gives China as the country of origin.

Ribbon hurdles and unframed panels

Musgrove's ten-questions page calls ribbon fencing the classic, less uniform pattern, in the same sizes as the framed panels except the 2 ft height. You still need posts. The "contain animals" line is pattern history, not a test. A ribbon panel with daylight at the bottom is a screen, and Hazel Hurdle World's notes fight burying it in wet soil. Hurdle life ranges, not roll life, are in how long willow hurdles last.

Hazel Hurdle World's unframed willow table, fetched 15 October 2026, is about 6 ft wide: £28.99 at 1 ft, £29.79 at 2 ft, £30.30 at 3 ft, £36.65 at 4 ft, £46.41 at 5 ft, and £54.16 at 6 ft. The 6 ft panel is made to order, and the site header shows £14.99 delivery. Fitting is cable ties to UC4 posts, not a timber frame. An unframed 6 ft panel at £54.16 and a framed panel at £66.60 or £129.00 are not substitutes until you know which framed height you are buying.

Choose the unframed hurdle for that maker's weave if you will follow their clearance and tie method. Choose Musgrove's frame when the regular edge is the point and you can wait. Choose ribbon for the less regular Musgrove pattern when you do not need the 2 ft height they exclude. Do not choose any of them from a photograph of a roll.

A roll still needs a fence behind it

The kept amazon.co.uk listings are rolls. Prime Plus is £44.99, Wadan £46.99, Abaseen £49.99, and the second Wadan title £59.99, from the comparison file. Abaseen is the top pick in our wattle fence comparison: title and specification both 1.5 m by 4 m, 4.5 from 125 reviews on that ASIN. It is a mat you tie to a porch, railing, gate or fence. It has no timber frame. The seller says it can come off without damage. The page gives no weight and no tested fixing.

£49.99 looks cheaper than £66.60 until you price the fence the roll has to hang on. If that fence is missing, the roll is an extra, not a saving. If the fence is sound, the roll is the product and the framed panel means posts you do not need. The two Wadan listings disagree between title and specification and share one review pool. Musgrove calls its measurements approximate.

Do not buy a roll and a length of batten and call it Musgrove's panel. Their frame is part of a hand-woven, made-to-order hurdle. A batten screwed across a roll is a fixing. Screwing through willow rods is the damage hurdle makers warn against when they specify ties.

Trellis, bespoke sizes and the height test

On Musgrove's trellis page the stated height includes a 1 ft trellis. A panel sold as 6 ft high is 5 ft of willow and 1 ft of trellis. Overall heights run 3, 4, 5 and 6 ft, all 6 ft wide. The finished top is what planning rules measure. A 6 ft trellis panel is about 1.83 m before posts. Beside a highway in England or Wales the usual limit is 1 metre. The tests are in garden fence height rules.

Bespoke framed panels run from 61 cm by 61 cm to 220 cm wide by 200 cm high. The frame is treated wooden battens, and custom panels cannot be returned. Two hundred centimetres is 2 metres. Posts that stand proud, or a site on a slope, can put the finished work over a 2 metre permitted-development figure. Musgrove says you are responsible for the size and the quantity.

Six to seven weeks is the current estimate, and stock sizes can leave sooner. If you need the boundary before a party, use a roll on an existing fence or wait. Measure trellis, posts and the highway line before a non-returnable order. Lay a bowed panel flat for a few days so moisture warp can relax. Do not force it into the posts. Treated battens are not a life warranty for the willow.

Common questions

What is a framed willow panel?
Musgrove Willows describes framed willow as a more contemporary take on a traditional hurdle, with a timber frame and a more regular edge. On the framed-panel page the standard width is 6 ft (1.83 metres) and the heights are 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 ft. The price range was £66.60 to £129.00. Panels are made to order, with £15 delivery to most UK mainland addresses and an estimated 6 to 7 weeks. Measurements are approximate. Posts are still required.
How is a ribbon hurdle different?
On Musgrove's ten-questions page, ribbon fencing is the more rustic pattern, less uniform than the framed panels, and they stock the same standard widths and heights except they exclude the 2 ft height for ribbon. Both fix to wooden or concrete posts. Ribbon-edged copy on that site also refers to traditional patterns used to contain animals. That is a history line. It does not make the weave rabbit-proof or dog-proof. The gaps are still a weave.
Can I use an amazon.co.uk willow roll as a framed panel?
No. The four products in the wattle comparison are screening rolls: Prime Plus £44.99, Wadan £46.99, Abaseen £49.99 and Wadan £59.99 in the comparison file. Abaseen is the top pick because the title and the specification both say 1.5 m by 4 m. A roll has no timber frame and will not stand as a bay between posts. Buying one because it is cheaper than Musgrove's £66.60 starting price buys a cover, not a framed panel.
Do framed panels still need posts?
Yes. Musgrove's install notes say framed panels attach to wooden or concrete posts, and the same is true of ribbon panels. The frame is the edge of the panel. It is not a post. You still mark a post line, and you still need a post at the end of the run. Hazel Hurdle World's unframed method is one post per panel plus one. Do not assume a framed panel needs fewer posts because the timber looks stiffer.
Does a trellis top count in the height?
On Musgrove's trellis page, the stated height includes the trellis. A 6 ft trellis panel is 5 ft of willow plus 1 ft of wooden trellis. If you add a foot in your head on top of a 6 ft framed panel, you will order a 7 ft overall height by mistake. The height that meets the planning test is the finished top, trellis included, measured from the ground, posts included if they stand proud.
What sizes can I order without going bespoke?
Musgrove's standard framed sizes on the page opened are 6 ft wide by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 ft high. Trellis versions on that separate page start at 3 ft overall rather than 2 ft, and the height includes the 1 ft trellis. Hazel Hurdle World's unframed willow table is a different seller: about 6 ft wide, from a 1 ft edging panel at £28.99 to 6 ft by 6 ft at £54.16 on 15 October 2026. Those are not framed Musgrove panels.
Are bespoke panels returnable?
Musgrove's made-to-measure page says bespoke panels cannot be returned or refunded, and that it is your responsibility to order the right size and quantity. The minimum they state is 61 cm wide by 61 cm high. The maximum is 220 cm wide by 200 cm high. The frame is described as treated wooden battens. At 200 cm high, a bespoke panel is already on the 2 metre line before posts. Confirm the finished height before you order a non-returnable panel.
Will a frame make the weave animal-proof?
No. A timber edge does not close the gaps in the willow, and it does not remove the need to keep a woven panel off wet soil. Musgrove's traditional "contain animals" wording is about ribbon patterns, not a test. If rabbits or a dog are the job, use mesh and treat any willow panel as a screen only.
