How to fit willow screening to a sound frame

Updated: October 2026

You have a weekend, a sound fence or a railing, and a willow roll still in the parcel. This is how to fit willow screening to that frame, and where you stop because the posts have failed. The roll is a cover you tie on. The products sit on the [willow fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/willow-fence). This page does not choose a roll. Products Compared used amazon.co.uk listings from 15 October 2026 and Primrose's fitting note. Nothing in this set was fitted or wind-tested here.

Fit it only to a fence or frame that is still sound

A screening roll is tied to a fence, a railing or a frame you already have. It does not become the structure. Walk the run before you cut the parcel ties. Press the posts. If the timber is soft, if a panel racks when you push it, or if a post moves at the ground, stop. A roll will not stiffen rotten posts, and cane on a failed fence only hides the failure until the next wind. Replace the fence, or use a hurdle on new posts. New posts are a professional job. The ordinary case is a sound panel you dislike. Fix the roll to that panel. Do not ask it to be a child gate or a security fence.

Bring the fixings, because the box often does not

Prime Plus, on both the 1.5 m listing and the 2 m listing, says galvanised wire, cable ties, screws or nails are not included. Assembly not required means the listing describes no build. You still attach the roll. Wadan's two titles and Abaseen's two titles say assembly is required, and none says fixings are in the box. On the 2 m Abaseen page, one reviewer used wire bought separately. Have wire or cable ties before you unroll 4 m of cane. Only the 1.5 m Abaseen listing says, in the seller's words, that the panels can be removed without damage. Do not plan to take the other rolls down on that sentence.

The only spacing note is someone else's guide

Primrose's garden screening guide is recorded as about every 10 cm by 50 cm. That is their note, not a measurement of these rolls and not a screw schedule. No kept listing states a BS 1722 part. Use that interval only so the sheet does not belly. Fix on the wires that already bind the canes. If your rails differ, follow the rails. If the roll bows, add a tie on the binding wire, not through a cane.

Keep the bottom off wet soil, then stop if it is no longer a tie-on

Do not leave the bottom of the roll in wet soil. Wovar tells buyers not to sit its own thin mat on the ground. That line is for Wovar's mat. These listings state no ground clearance. Keep the cane out of standing water anyway, and do not invent a gap and call it specified. Stop when the job is no longer a weekend tie-on. A professional takes new posts. Stop if you cannot tell whether the boundary is by a vehicle highway, in a conservation area or on a listed curtilage, or if a balcony lease is unclear. The height cases are on the willow fence buying guide. If any of that is missing, leave the parcel closed. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Can you fit a willow screening roll to a fence you already have?
Yes, when that fence, railing or frame is still sound. The roll is a cover you tie on. It does not replace posts, and it does not stiffen a panel that already moves. If the timber is soft or the panel racks, do not hang it. Replace the fence, or use a hurdle on new posts.
What do you do if the posts are rotten?
Stop. A cane roll will not repair them. Hanging it there hides the failure until the wind takes the panel and the roll together. New posts are a professional job. A hurdle on new posts is a different purchase from the roll in the parcel.
Are the fixings in the box?
On Prime Plus, no. The bullets name galvanised wire, cable ties, screws or nails and say they are not included. On Wadan and Abaseen the listings do not say fixings are included. One Abaseen reviewer bought wire separately. Have the ties before you unroll the sheet.
How far apart should the ties be?
The only figure on record is Primrose's note of about every 10 cm by 50 cm. It is not a test of these rolls, and it is not a screw grid. Use it as a reminder to fix often enough, on the binding wire, that the sheet cannot belly, and follow the rails you actually have.
Should the bottom of the roll sit in the soil?
No. Do not leave it in wet soil. These listings state no clearance in centimetres, and they were not tested off the ground here. Wovar's line is about Wovar's own thin mat, not a specification for these rolls. Keep the cane out of standing water anyway.
Does assembly not required on Prime Plus mean it is already fitted?
No. It means the listing describes no build. You still attach the roll, and the same bullets say the wire, ties, screws or nails are not in the box. Read not required as no assembly instructions, not as already on the fence.
When should a fitter or a builder take over?
When you need new posts, when you cannot tell whether the boundary is by a vehicle highway, in a conservation area or on a listed curtilage, or when a balcony lease is unclear. A weekend tie-on is only the case where the frame is already sound and the height is already allowed.
