Willow screening vs reed for one fence

Updated: October 2026

You are covering one fence or one balcony, and a willow cane roll and a reed roll look like two versions of the same idea. They are not. This page is willow screening vs reed for that one job: when the willow roll is the purchase, when you leave for reed, and the condition that has to sit in the same sentence. The willow set only is on the [willow fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/willow-fence). Products Compared used the willow listings on amazon.co.uk on 15 October 2026. No reed listing was captured. No laboratory compared the two.

Our top picks

On this page

They are two rolls, not two sizes of one fence

A willow screening roll is vertical canes on horizontal wire. You tie it to a fence, a railing or a frame you already have, to soften bins, a tired panel, a seat or a balcony. A reed roll is a different product. It is not a taller willow or a cheaper willow. A hurdle, living willow and a low border are other purchases. If you wanted a hurdle that is the fence, or rods you plant, you are not choosing between these two rolls. Stars on a willow listing do not describe reed. The RHS figure of about 50 to 60 per cent porosity is for woven hurdles, not for these cane rolls and not for reed. Using it to call one roll denser would be a false comparison.

What the willow roll does on the same fence

On a sound fence or a balcony railing, a willow cane roll slows a view and a breeze. You can still see through the gaps. There is no tested lifespan, British Standard or fire rating for these rolls. Musgrove's five to seven years is for maintained willow panels, not for these thin rolls, and it is not a reed comparison. About 1 m to 1.2 m is the bin band, about 1.5 m is a seat, and about 1.8 m to 2 m is standing cover, only where that is lawful. This set has no roll at bin height. Abaseen's 1.5 m page, at £49.99, is the top pick where title and specification agree. Wadan is the best value only if the length that arrives matches the job. Both Wadan pages put a specification of 3 m by 1 m against a 4 m title. Those holes are not a reason to invent a reed advantage. The order for a willow roll is on the willow fence buying guide.

What we cannot say about reed

Reed price, stars, stem density, fixings and lifespan are n/a here. There is no reed listing stored beside these willow pages. A pounds-per-square-metre figure from the willow titles must not be copied onto reed. Reed is denser is not in the sources. Willow lasts longer is not in the sources. No fire rating and no wind test exist for either side. If a shop later shows you reed, read that page on its own size, price, reviews and fixings. Nothing here can pre-score it.

When willow, when reed

Take a willow cane roll if you want willow on a sound fence, railing or frame, and you accept that it only slows the view. Leave for reed only when you want that other material, and only after you have read a reed listing's own size, price and reviews. This page cannot say which is more private or which lasts longer. That condition is part of the recommendation. If you need the view gone, buy neither roll. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Is reed screening the same purchase as a willow fence roll?
No. A willow roll here is vertical canes on wire, tied to a frame you already have. A reed roll is a different product, not another size of the same fence. Willow star ratings do not describe it. Hurdles, living willow and a low border are different purchases again.
When should you choose the willow cane roll?
When you want willow on a sound fence, railing or frame, and you accept that the roll only slows the view. The gaps stay. Use each listing's own size and price, and do not trust a title that fights its specification. If you need the view gone, willow is the wrong side of this pair as well.
When should you choose reed?
When you want reed, and only after you have read that listing's own size, price and reviews. This page cannot price it, score it or time its life. Choosing reed because a willow page looked expensive, or because a willow review mentioned gaps, borrows the wrong product.
Which one blocks the view better?
This research cannot say. The willow roll slows a view and still has gaps. Reed density is n/a. The RHS porosity figure is for woven hurdles, not for either roll. Calling one of them more private would invent the comparison.
Which one lasts longer?
This research cannot say. There is no tested lifespan for these willow rolls, and none stored for reed. Five to seven years, from a willow panel seller, is for maintained panels, not for these thin rolls and not for a reed roll.
Can you use the willow prices here as a guide to reed?
No. The 15 October 2026 figures, from £44.99 to £79.99, are willow shelf prices on these titles. A pounds-per-square-metre rule from them is willow only, and only if that title size arrives. Reed price on amazon.co.uk is n/a in this set.
What is the one recommendation, and what has to be true first?
Take willow if you want willow and you accept a slower view on a frame that is already sound. Take reed only if you want reed and you will judge that listing on its own size, price and reviews. What has to be true first is that neither privacy nor lifespan was measured between them here.
