Willow fence buying guide before you order

Updated: October 2026

You already have a fence, a railing or a frame, and the amazon.co.uk pages in front of you all say willow. This willow fence buying guide is the order to use before the basket: type, then height, then a support that is still sound, then the numbers on the listing. The seven products and the shelf prices are on the [willow fence comparison](/hub/fencing-and-wire/willow-fence). This page does not pick one of them. Products Compared captured the listings on 15 October 2026. No laboratory tested the cane, the wire or the wind. Prices are GBP.

Start with the type, not the brand

A screening roll is vertical willow canes on horizontal wire, tied to something that already stands. A hurdle is a rigid panel on its own posts. A living willow fedge is planting: the RHS describes dormant rods pushed into soil, then woven and pruned. A low border is push-in edging. Relaxdays, five panels at £48.90, is titled 20 cm by 100 cm and also says about 40 cm. About 20 cm visible marks a bed, not a neighbour. If you want a roll, leave the hurdle, the fedge and that border. Reed and plastic trellis are different products.

Pick the height, then check whether it is allowed

Choose height before brand. About 1 m to 1.2 m covers bins. About 1.5 m covers a seat. About 1.8 m to 2 m is standing privacy, only where that is lawful. No screening roll here is in the bin band. The shortest titles are 1.5 m by 4 m. Two metres is a job height, not a right on every boundary. England's Class A is not permitted development above 1 m next to a highway used by vehicles, or above 2 m elsewhere, and an alteration must not exceed the former height or that limit, whichever is greater. Listed curtilage is excluded. Wales is over 1 m by a vehicle highway or its footpath, or over 2 m elsewhere. Scotland is 2 m, or 1 m if it fronts a road, and the class fails in a conservation area or on a listed curtilage. Northern Ireland is 1 m beside a vehicle road and 2 m otherwise. Leases can be tighter. If you cannot tell the case, stop.

A roll needs a fence or frame that is already sound

The roll does not stiffen rotten posts. If a screwdriver goes into the post, or the panel rocks when you lean on it, replace the fence or use a hurdle on new posts. New posts are a professional job. Stop as well if a balcony lease is unclear, or if living willow would sit on drains. A sound but ugly panel is the ordinary case: you tie the canes to the frame you have. No listing states a BS 1722 part. There is no tested lifespan or fire rating. It is not child-safe, pet-proof or fully private.

On arrival, believe the numbers that agree

Unroll it and look for broken canes, broken binding wire, and a height that matches the order. Prime Plus says the fixings are not included. Wadan and Abaseen do not say they are. Assembly not required on Prime Plus means the page describes no build. You still attach the roll. Weatherproof and heat-treated are seller wording, not a test. Wadan at £46.99 titles 1.5 m by 4 m and specifies 3 m by 1 m, with 29.99 square metres, and the £59.99 page repeats that file. Abaseen at £49.99 is where both lines say 1.5 m by 4 m. If the numbers disagree, leave the listing. Which kept listing fits a job is on best willow fence. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

Is a willow screening roll the same thing as a hurdle or a living willow fence?
No. A screening roll is canes on wire, tied to a fence or railing you already have. A hurdle is a rigid panel on posts and can be the fence. A living willow fedge, as the RHS describes it, is dormant rods in soil, then woven and pruned. The Relaxdays border here is push-in edging around 20 cm high, not a roll.
What height should you buy for bins, for a seat, and for standing cover?
About 1 m to 1.2 m for bins, about 1.5 m for a seat, and about 1.8 m to 2 m for standing cover where that is lawful. This set has no screening roll in the bin band. The shortest titles are 1.5 m by 4 m. Use that for bins only if the extra height still suits the store.
Can you put a 2 m willow roll on any UK boundary?
No. England's Class A limit is 1 m next to a highway used by vehicles and 2 m elsewhere. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each have their own 1 m and 2 m cases. A listed curtilage or a conservation area can remove the right. If you cannot tell which case applies, get advice first.
What if the title says 1.5 m by 4 m and the specification says something else?
Pause. On the Wadan 1.5 m page the title says 1.5 m by 4 m, the specification says 3 m by 1 m, and the unit count is 29.99 square metres. Those are three different areas. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects the goods to match the description. Measure on arrival, and do not plan the run from the title alone.
When do you stop and get advice instead of buying a roll?
Stop if the posts are rotten, if you need new posts, or if you cannot tell whether the boundary is by a vehicle highway, in a conservation area or on a listed curtilage. Stop if a balcony lease is unclear. A roll will not repair a failed fence.
